Описание:
In recent decades, Chinese cities have experienced profound social, economic and spatial transformations. In particular, Chinese cities have witnessed the largest housing boom in history and unprecedented housing privatization. China now is a country of homeowners, with more than 70 per cent of urban residents owning homes, higher than many developed countries.
This book shows how China's spectacular housing success is not shared by all social groups, with rapidly rising housing inequality, and residential segregation increasingly prevalent in previously homogeneous Chinese cities. It focuses on the two extremes of the residential landscape, and reveals the stark contrast between low-income households who live in shacks in so-called 'urban villages' and the nouveaux riches who live in exclusive gated villa communities. Over four parts, the contributors look at the degree to which inequality affects Chinese cities, and the extent of residential differentiation; housing for the urban poor, and in particular, housing for migrants from rural China; housing for the rapidly expanding Chinese middle class and the new rich; and finally, governance in residential neighbourhoods.
Housing Inequality in Chinese Cities presents theoretically informed and empirically grounded research into the polarized residential landscape in Chinese cities, and as such will be of great interest to students and scholars of Chinese studies, urban geography, urban sociology, and urban studies.

Описание: Donald Grinberg has made a study which brings to light some aspects of Dutch housing which till now have been neglected in most analyses in books and maga- zines. Grinberg is a USA citizen and studied architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. With the help of a Sheldon Fellowship and a grant from the Dutch Minis- terie van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening he was able to do the research for this book in The Netherlands for a year. Grinberg is working together with his wife, who is Dutch - one of the reasons he can read and speak Dutch. His specific situation as an American who can read publications in the Dutch language gave him a unique opportunity for access to original source material and recent studies. Until now, most publications about Dutch architecture in the period 1900-1940 included housing projects mostly because they were part of 'het Nieuwe Bouh2n'. This is the Dutch expression for the modern architecture resulting from action groups such as De Stijl, who introduced new space-time awareness as a basis for the expression of architecture. Oud, Mondriaan, Rietveld, and Van Doesburg of De Stijl were followed by the groups de 8 from Amsterdam and Opbouw from Rotter- dam. Members of these groups called themselves anti-aesthetic functionalists - Stam, Merkelbach, Van Tijen, Van Loghem, Duiker, Van der Vlugt, Van den Broek, and others.

Описание:
This book offers a comprehensive overview of current housing practices across Asian cities based on facts and trends in the market. For many countries in Asia, the future of housing is now. This future is closely linked to successful theoretical advancement and policy practice in housing studies. This volume brings together 12 chapters divided across four thematic sections that sum up the concept and conditionality of housing in Asian cities. It studies housing through conceptual perspectives and empirical studies to explore established notions, cultures and practices relevant to the 21st-century post-reform context in Asia. Housing and property have long been economic drivers leading many individual households towards better lives and associated social and community benefits, while also collectively improving the economic base of a city or country. This book examines the nature of the interplay of both state and market in the housing outcomes of these cities.
With its extensive geographic coverage across Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Far East and West Asia and a crossection of different income groups, the book will interest reseachers and scholars in urban studies, architecture, development studies, public policy, political studies, sociology, policy makers in local and central governments, housing and planning professionals, and commercial firms engaged in property market or real estate in Asia. It will also provide ideas, tools and good practices for institutional enablement, stakeholders involved in these interventions, private sector organizations and NGOs.

The One-Way Street of Integration examines two contrasting housing policy approaches to achieving racial justice. Integration initiatives and community development efforts have been for decades contrasting means of achieving racial equity through housing policy. Edward G. Goetz doesn't see the solution to racial injustice as the government moving poor and nonwhite people out of their communities, and by tracing the tensions involved in housing integration and policy across fifty years and myriad developments he shows why.
Goetz's core argument, in a provocative book that shows today's debates about housing, mobility, and race have deep roots, is that fair housing advocates have adopted a spatial strategy of advocacy that has increasingly brought it into conflict with community development efforts. The One-Way Street of Integration critiques fair housing integration policies for targeting settlement patterns while ignoring underlying racism and issues of economic and political power. Goetz challenges liberal orthodoxy, determining that the standard efforts toward integration are unlikely to lead to racial equity or racial justice in American cities. In fact, in this pursuit it is the community development movement rather than integrated housing projects that has the greatest potential for connecting to social change and social justice efforts.
