This book explores an often neglected current in contemporary French political thought that challenges the limits of the concept of democracy. It situates the projects of Jacques Ranciere, Claude Lefort and Miguel Abensour in relation to each other, as well as to the larger philosophical question of the nature of democracy itself. In doing so, Bryan Nelson illuminates democracy’s potential as a profound emancipatory and transformative project, offering an unprecedented challenge to modes of domination, strategies of inequality and hierarchies of all kinds.
Against prevailing interpretations, the author draws on the central concepts, problems and polemics in the works of Ranciere, Lefort and Abensour to develop a bold conception of democracy that allows us to rethink its character, power and broader social and political implications.

Writing involves risks—the risk that one will be misunderstood, the risk of being persecuted, the risks of being made a champion for causes in which one does not believe, this risk of inadvertently supporting a reader’s prejudices, to name a few. In trying to give expression to what is true, the writer must “clear a passage within the agitated world of passions,” an undertaking that always to some extent fails: writers are never the master of their own speech. In Writing: The Political Test, France’s leading political philosopher, Claude Lefort, illuminates the process by which writers negotiate difficult path to free themselves from the ideological and contextual traps that would doom their attempts to articulate a new vision. Lefort examines writers whose works provide special insights into this problem of risk, both literary artists and political philosophers. Among them are Salman Rushdie, Sade, Tocqueville,m Machiavelli, Leo Strauss, Orwell, Kant, Robespierre, Guizot, and Pierre Clastres. In Tocqueville, for example, Lefort finds that the author’s improvisatory and open-ended expression represents the character of the democratic experience. Orwell’s work on totalitarianism shows up the totalitarian subject’s complicity in this political regime. And Rushdie is remarkable for his solid attack on relativism. With the character and fate of the political forms of modernity, democracy, and totalitarianism a central theme, Lefort concludes with some reflections on the collapse of the Soviet Union. This intriguing and accessible exploration of literature’s political aspects and political philosophy’s literary ones will be welcomed by those who have been stymied by current efforts to bridge these two fields. Taken together, the essays in this volume also stand as an intellectual autobiography of Lefort, making it an excellent introduction to his work for less experience students of political theory or philosophy.

Uncovering the neglected theories of the council system in the 20th century
This book examines the historical emergence of the council system in Russia and Germany by the end of the First World War, reconstructing the intellectual history of council democracy in 20th century political theory, and providing in-depth analysis of council democracy in the political thought of Cornelius Castoriadis, Claude Lefort and Hannah Arendt.
Popp-Madsen argues that council democracy can productively be interpreted through the prism of constituent power: the form-giving power of the people to decide on their own institutional forms of political co-existence. Whereas other interpreters of constituent power claim an unbridgeable gap between constituent power and constituted power, this book asserts that council democracy discloses a historically grounded way of institutionalising the constituent power. Council democracy, in this interpretation, becomes a way of controlling the constituent power without completely exhausting it, thereby giving the citizenry continual access to the powers of self-transformation, co-creation and constituent freedom.

Описание: A Form of Communication All stories are a form of communication that expresses the dramatic code.(Truby, 5) John Truby says that the story is a form of communication and that its purpose is to express what is called the "dramatic code." This code of the human drama is man's desire for fulfillment and accomplishing his journey. Man's journey comes at a price since he begins this journey with certain expectations and resourcefulness, but as he continues along his journey, he finds he lacks either a clear goal or sufficient tools to accomplish the goals he wants to achieve. Human beings can accomplish his desires in purely abstract form or one closer to the material world. The former brings to mind the many accomplishments of people who work in the theoretical world, while others pursue more practical goals of creating new inventions or designing new laws and legislature. Regardless of what field of action a person lives out his life, speculative and theoretical or technology and business, his goals are often offset by difficulties and setbacks. The dramatic code is those habits of mind and heart that keep a person on the right track of his goal, while working out the ways in which he can overcome his difficulties. Searching for Accomplishment In his search for the accomplishment of his sought after goal, a man may become disheartened and fearful of failure or setbacks. He searches for others who can show him the way. He needs teachers and instructors. Ultimately, a person must find his own true wisdom to flesh out his own dreams of success. At any and eery point along the way he may encounter failure or roadblocks. After he finds guidance and instruction, he faces one last challenge to accomplish his goal and that is himself. While his environment and people whom he encounters can cause trouble and hardship for the hero seeking to bring a resolution to his story, there is no greater challenge to overcome than his own fears or inability to move closer towards the goal. Often the structure of the story brings about the awakening of the hero's dilemma he needs to face; that is, something inside the hero must change before he can overcome his adversary. Whether it is fear, cowardice, laziness or stupidity, every kind of vice man is capable of may come between himself and his goal. The main drama is an interior transformation of his own weaknesses and desires. Inner transformation is a large part of the dramatic code. Inner transformation and change encompass both the interior battle as well as the exterior confrontations a person seeking his true self must encounter. I believe that this is an alignment process of interior and exterior values. These values may be ethical, moral, psychological and spiritual. These personal values form a web of interrelationships with one another and form a personal web of meaning.
