Historians have often either ignored Anacharsis Cloots (1755–1794) or considered him deranged because he claimed to be the ‘orator of the human race’ and devised a ‘universal republic’ based on the ‘sovereignty of the human race’. This book is the first comprehensive study of the entire body of Cloots’s written works and political actions. By contextualizing them, the book non only rehabilitates Cloots as a political thinker worthy of consideration, but also argues that his political thought constitutes a specific branch of republicanism in the age of Atlantic revolutions: cosmopolitan republicanism.
The introduction suggests how 18th-century French cosmopolitanism was a new philosophical tradition, but was composed of several themes, which the book then analyses in Cloots’s writings. The first chapter provides a brief overview of his life. The second chapter explains why he called himself orator and wrote pamphlets, and why contemporary readers should not discard this as non-philosophical. Having established Cloots’s writings as constituting a philosophical system, the following chapters explores it through the themes laid out in the introduction. First, the concept of reason and his understanding of science. Second, the paradigm of natural law and the role of nature in moral and political thought. Third, the conception of humanity and individuals in nature and society. Finally, republicanism and its principles. The last chapter summarizes the elements of Cloots’s cosmopolitan republicanism and opens a research programme to other political thinkers in the age of Atlantic revolutions for historians and political theorists.

For really hot days, we had the traditional swing set that was well-used and a little creaky. But our backyard was kind of special. There was room to play ball, plenty of trees to climb, and the best place was the abandoned chicken coup at the back right-hand corner of the property. Missing the door and all its windows and with its rotted and tattered siding gave it the appearance of being haunted. The wood flooring was mostly rotten, but even with these conditions it was a great place to play army. The standard order of the day from our parents was, "Stay out of the chicken coup."

The attack came without any warning I was facing the interior of the bed as I slept on my left side. There was a crushing blow to my back from the top of my shoulders to the small of my back. It was a solid object of massive intensity. During impact, it slid my whole body approximately six inches from its original sleeping position. Healthy, I loved running and walking for hours on end. Relaxing feeling as the wind blowing through my hair, listening to music through earphones, without a care in the world. Teaching early morning aerobics at 5:30 a.m., enjoyable never a problem, enjoyed dancing to the music. One decision driving home from work changed my life forever. Should I wait for the accident ahead to clear, or take an alternate route home? I took the alternate route. Technically, was this meant to be, or is this my punishment for being so impatient?
Fender bender accident, whiplash from behind, nothing too serious (at least that's what I thought at first), pushed into the car in front, my car looked like an accordion. Both ends of my car were crushed. Slammed my left side of my head and ear, not sure where they hit as everything happened so fast. Instantly, my left ear kept ringing; it wouldn't stop ringing. It was impossible to sleep. I retired to bed fine. I woke up the following morning in a complete silent world. Trying to sleep in total silence was becoming a nightmare; becoming afraid of the dark as my mind imagines dangers I cannot control, creating panic attacks, and restless sleep. I lived in fear of trying to sleep as my mind never shuts off. My mind wanders looking for something it can never find, often times waking up in a cold sweat, screaming out for help.
Tested with an MRI to diagnose a brain tumour, stroke, MS, spinal tap testing for meningitis--all clear. A mystery medically still never solved. Retired to bed fine, no ear ache (never had any) and woke up deaf. Only legible medical cause has to be the fender bender whiplash accident, no other explanation. I've never suffered with any ear problems my entire life, never an ear ache, infection, nothing.
