Sustainable Water Treatment: Engineering Solutions for a Variable Climate covers sustainable water and environmental engineering aspects relevant for the drainage and treatment of storm water and wastewater. The book explains the fundamental science and engineering principles for the student and professional market. Standard and novel design recommendations for sustainable technologies, such as constructed wetlands, sustainable drainage systems and sustainable flood retention basins are provided to account for the interests of professional engineers and environmental scientists. The book presents the latest research findings in wastewater treatment and runoff control that are ideal for academics and senior consultants.
The book offers a challenging, diverse, holistic, multidisciplinary, experimental and modelling-orientated case study, covering topics such as natural wetlands, constructed treatment wetlands for pollution control, sustainable drainage systems managing diffuse pollution, specific applications, such as wetlands treating dye wastewater and ecological sanitation systems recycling treated waters for the irrigation of crops.
Explains the fundamental science and engineering principles behind each topic
Provides an easy-to-understand, descriptive overview of complex 'black box' drainage and treatment systems and general design issues involved
Includes a comprehensive analysis of asset performance, modelling of treatment processes, and an assessment of sustainability and economics
Описание: Many utilities in the United States and Canada are looking to peracetic acid (PAA) disinfection; a technology that has been used in Europe for more than a decade; as a part of a risk management decision to reduce or eliminate gas chlorine and other disinfection byproducts from their treatment processes. However; there is a paucity of information available about the evaluation and implementation of this technology. This special publication aims to provide an overview of the chemistry and kinetics of PAA disinfection; along with information for design; permitting; and implementation of the technology.
Описание: Noting that a multitude of academic publications have proven the robustness of the water-driven approach adopted by AquaCrop, this study discusses the challenges that remain, including the need for more rigorous testing.
Описание: Accessibility to clean and sufficient water resources for agriculture is key in feeding the steadily increasing world population in a sustainable manner. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) offer a promising contribution to enhance availability and quality of water for productive purposes and human consumption, while simultaneously striving to preserve the integrity and intrinsic value of the ecosystems. Implementing successful NBS for water management, however, is not an easy task, since many ecosystems are already severely degraded and exploited beyond their regenerative capacity. Furthermore, ecosystems are large and complex and the many stakeholders involved may have conflicting interests. Hence, implementation of NBS requires a structured and comprehensive approach that starts with the valuation of the services provided by the ecosystem. The whole set of use and non-use values, in monetary terms, provides a factual basis to guide the implementation of NBS, which is ideally based on transdisciplinary principles, i.e. complemented with scientific and case-specific knowledge of the ecosystem in an adaptive decision-making process that involves the relevant stakeholders. This discussion paper evaluated twenty-one NBS case studies using a non-representative sample, to learn from successful and failed experiences and to identify possible causalities among factors that characterize the implementation of NBS. The case studies give a minor role to valuation of ecosystem services, an area for which the literature is still developing guidance. Less successful water management projects tend to suffer from inadequate factual and scientific basis and uncoordinated or insufficient stakeholder involvement and lack of long term planning. Successful case studies point to satisfactory understanding of the functioning of ecosystems and importance of multi-stakeholder platforms, well-identified funding schemes, realistic monitoring and evaluation systems and endurance of its promoters.

Описание: This book aims to define the concept of Nature Based Solutions (NBS) by using case studies from members of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) Water Action Group - NatureWat. NBS is defined and characterized in terms of water source, contaminants, removal mechanisms and resource recovery potential. The case studies presented illustrate the appropriateness of NBS promoting climate resilience. Readers will discover a technology portfolio based on a number of demonstration sites in the fields of climate change adaption, water and wastewater treatment, resource recovery and re-use, and restoring ecosystems to promote the use of nature based solutions. The chapters in the book present a multidisciplinary approach involving social scientists, governance representatives and engineers. The underlying philosophy of the book is the circular economy of water which prioritizes the concepts of resource recovery and resilience within water resource management. The first section of the book presents the background and objectives of the study, and how the action group aims to promote the use of nature based solutions through its diverse technology portfolio. Particular attention is given to the goals of finding cost-effective solutions for wastewater treatment, climate change mitigation, disaster risk reduction, flood protection, greening cities, degraded areas restoration and biodiversity preservation. The chapter on reclaimed water addresses water reuse and defines the term fit for purpose. Barriers and limitations related to NBS for water resource management are discussed. The book concludes with several case studies at local, regional and global levels which illustrate a new approach to water management. These case studies illustrate the application of a hybrid green and grey infrastructure system. This is a combination of traditional engineered infrastructure with nature based solutions which combines centralised and decentralised systems to optimise the reclamation of water for reuse in a fit for purpose model.
Provides specific recommendations to assist city planners
Presents a unique overview of nature-based solutions, climate change adaptation
Shows the effect of nature-based solutions in urban areas with research findings

Описание: Urban greening policies and measures have recently shown a high potential impact on the design and reshaping of the built environment, especially in urban regeneration processes. This book provides insights on analytical methods, planning strategies and shared governance tools for successfully integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the urban planning practice. The selected contributions present real-life application cases, in which the mainstreaming of NBS are investigated according to two main challenges: the planning and designing of physical and spatial integration of NBS in cities on one side, and the implementation of suitable shared governance models and co-creation pathways on the other. Описание: Nature-based solutions (NbS) are solutions inspired or supported by nature. They include ecosystem conservation and restoration measures, as well as the creation or enhancement of natural processes in man-made ecosystems, such as cities. Recent interest in NbS has emphasized their importance for urban water management and cities across the world have begun to experiment with them. Experiences from different contexts, however, are not adequately captured and understood. This book aims to address this gap by compiling case studies and reviews that explore NbS for urban water management from different regions and perspectives and highlight emerging challenges and opportunities for harnessing their potential.

Описание: Activated carbon is simple to operate as an adsorption medium for water, serves as a proactive barrier for contamination, and does not produce by-products from its use. Used in treatment worldwide, activated carbon produces very high-quality water. Its implementation helps utilities gain regulatory compliance and position themselves to meet future requirements. This solutions-oriented book for water treatment providers, engineers, and students covers three major areas of concern.1. Fundamentals of activated carbon adsorption to provide a basic understanding of activated carbon technologies for drinking water treatment.2. Adsorption applications, approaches, and case studies that demonstrate how and where activated carbon has been implemented to solve specific water quality challenges.3. System design and procurement approaches to achieve effectiveness and efficiency in the use of granular activated carbon and powdered activated carbon.
