Описание: By adopting a chronological approach, with each chapter covering a successive twenty-five year period, and focusing attention on the artists, Tom Nichols presents a vivid, richly illustrated and easily navigable study of Venetian Renaissance art.
Описание: Under the rule of Henry VII (r. 1485-1509) England became a powerful nation. The Tudor court sought to express its worldliness and political weight through major artistic commissions, employing Florentine sculptors and painters to create lavish new interiors, suitable for entertaining foreign dignitaries, for its royal palaces. These were exemplified by Henry VIII's palace of Nonsuch, so named because no other palace could match its magnificence. Italian sculpture, painting, and tapestries of the day reflected an interest in portraiture and dynastic monuments, epitomized in England by the royal tomb projects created by Baccio Bandinelli, Benedetto da Rovezzano, and Pietro Torrigiani.
Generously illustrated throughout, The Anglo-Florentine Renaissance traces the artistic links between Medicean Florence and Tudor England through essays by an international team of scholars, and explores how the language of Florentine art effectively expressed Tudor political aspirations and rose to prominence as a new international courtly style.
Описание: Known as the "century of anatomy", the 16th century in Italy saw an explosion of studies and treatises on the discipline. Medical science advanced at an unprecedented rate, and physicians published on anatomy as never before. Simultaneously, many of the period's most prominent artists - including Leonardo and Michelangelo in Florence, Raphael in Rome, and Rubens working in Italy - turned to the study of anatomy to inform their own drawings and sculptures, some by working directly with anatomists and helping to illustrate their discoveries. The result was a rich corpus of art objects detailing the workings of the human body with an accuracy never before attained.
Art and Anatomy in Renaissance Italy examines this crossroads between art and science, showing how the attempt to depict bone structure, musculature, and our inner workings - both in drawings and in three dimensions - constituted an important step forward in how the body was represented in art. While already remarkable at the time of their original publication, the anatomical drawings by 16th-century masters have even foreshadowed developments in anatomic studies in modern times.
Описание: Examines two masterful armours for man and horse acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This title discusses the function, design, decoration, and manufacture of these masterpieces and situates them within German art, culture, and politics, and within the development of European armour in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Описание: A leading architect of the Italian Renaissance, Baldassarre Peruzzi (1481-1536) has, until now, been a little-known, enigmatic figure. A paucity of biographical documentation and a modest number of surviving buildings, coupled with an undeservedly critical assessment by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), have long cast Peruzzi's career in shadow. With Becoming an Architect in Renaissance Italy, Ann C. Huppert taps into a known, but neglected resource--Peruzzi's autograph drawings--and reveals the full scope and artistic mastery of Peruzzi's work and its enduring influence.
Extraordinary not only in their beauty and design inventiveness, but also in the varied representational techniques and practical mathematics noted within them, Peruzzi's drawings record an evolving artistic process. Reassessing his architectural masterworks, Huppert also explores lesser-known work: his studies of Roman antiquity, realized paintings and unrealized buildings, as well as engineering projects. Huppert shows that Peruzzi anticipated modern representational methods and scientific approaches in architecture, and pinpoints the moment when architecture began to emerge as a profession distinct from the other arts.

Описание: This book explores images whose sexual content has all too often been either ignored or denied. Each chapter is devoted to a place that artists associated with sexual activity or desire: the bed, the dressing area of the home, the window and doorway, the bath, and the street. By examining both canonical works, such as Jan van Eyck's "Arnolfini Portrait" and Petrus Christus' "Goldsmith's Shop" and long-neglected objects, such as combs, badges and bathhouse murals, and by investigating a wide range of subjects - same-sex desire, adultery, marriage, courtship, and prostitution - Diane Wolfthal demonstrates how illicit forms of sexuality were linked to the 'chaste sexuality' of marriage. Wofthal shows how both church and state attempted to regulate sexual conduct, and she examines those sources not only that reinforced this way of thinking, but also that resisted or subverted it. The insistence that sexual intercourse be confined to marriage, performed in a particular way and reserved for purposes of procreation is shown to be subverted and undermined both in the imagery produced around the subject, and in the reality itself.

The Italian Renaissance was a creative period for art criticism as well as for art itself. The early efforts to give verbal accounts of visual representations and their quality throw light not only on the art of the period but also on art criticism at any time. This collection of papers by art historian and critic Michael Baxandall represents his thinking over the past forty years on the relation between language and art. He offers seven thought-provoking pieces, three of which are new and written specifically for this book. Focusing on works of the fifteenth century, Baxandall shows with fresh insight how words match the experience of looking at paintings and sculptures. The author introduces the basic Renaissance framework for art criticism and proceeds to explore various humanist critical writings of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. He concludes with a major new essay on Piero della Francesca's Resurrection of Christ inwhich he probes the visual experience of a painting that criticism seeks to verbalize.
