The twilight of Imperial Russia witnessed a sudden renaissance that left a profound imprint on the visual, literary and performing arts: here was a Silver Age as luminous perhaps as the Golden Age of Russian literature many decades before.
Advancing in roughly chronological sequence, Moscow and St Petersburg in Russia’s Silver Age highlights the essential social and political developments of this turbulent era, which painting, poetry, music and dance both reflected and affected. A dazzling array of artists, writers, composers, actors, singers, dancers and designers are presented in context, including Tolstoy, Pasternak, Gorky, Akhmatova, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Nijinsky, Scriabin, Karsavina, Meyerhold, Chaliapin, Stanislavsky, Diaghilev, Roerich, Repin, Serov, Somov, Vrubel, Bakst, Kandinsky, Malevich, Mayakovsky and many more. The book carries a rich repertoire of artistic images and vintage documentary photographs, many of which have not been published before. With a clear narrative and comprehensive bibliography, this volume will appeal both to the specialist and to the general student of Russian history and culture.
Описание: Selling Russia’s Treasures documents one of the great cultural dramas of the twentieth century: the sale, by a cash-hungry Soviet government, of the artistic treasures accumulated by the Russian royal family, aristocracy, and church over the centuries and nationalized after the October 1917 revolution. An astonishing variety of objects, from icons and illuminated manuscripts to Faberge eggs and Old Master paintings, entered the collections of wealthy westerners like Andrew Mellon; in fact, the canvases he purchased from the Hermitage now form the core of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Written by the leading experts in the field and long regarded as the definitive treatment of its subject, the original Russian edition of Selling Russia’s Treasures is sought after by scholars and laymen alike. Now, for the first time, this important book is made available in English, in a revised and expanded edition that includes new material on the secret files of the Hermitage, the sale of religious art, and the loss of twentieth-century French paintings from the Museum of New Western Art.
Numerous color plates reunite long-dispersed masterworks, if only on the page, and rare photographs and archival documents help bring the buried history of the “Stalin sales” to light. Several appendices—including a checklist of pieces sold from Russia’s crown jewels, a chronology, and biographies of key figures—add to the value of this volume, which not only reveals an important episode of cultural history, but is also relevant to contemporary debates about museum deaccessioning and the repatriation of cultural objects.
Описание: Women have participated in war throughout history, but their experience in Russia during the First World War was truly exceptional. Between the war's
beginning and the October Revolution of 1917, approximately 6,000 women answered their country's call. These courageous women became media stars throughout Europe and
America, but were brushed aside by Soviet chroniclers and until now have been largely neglected by history.
Laurie Stoff draws on deep archival research into previously
unplumbed material, including many first-person accounts, to examine the roots, motivations, and legacy of these women. She reveals that Russia was the only nation in World War I
that systematically employed women in the military, marking the first time that a government run by men had organized women for combat. And although they were originally envisioned
as propaganda - promoting patriotism and citizenship to inspire the thousands of males who had been deserting or refusing to fight - Russian women also proved themselves more than
capable in combat.
Describing the formation, provisioning, and training of the units, Stoff sheds light on their social and educational backgrounds, while recounting a number
of amazing individual stories. She tells how Maria Bochkareva, commander of the First Russian Women's Battalion of Death, and her unit met its baptism of fire in combat and how
Bochkareva later traveled to the U.S. and met President Wilson.
We also meet Maria Bocharnikova, who served with the First Petrograd Women's Battalion that defen
ed the Winter Palace during the Bolshevik Revolution. Stoff also chronicles the exploits of the Second Moscow Women's Battalion of Death, Third Kuban Women's Shock Battalion,
and the First Women's Naval Detachment. Stoff's remarkable account rescues from oblivion an important but still little-known aspect of Russia's experience in World War I.
It
also provides new insights into gender roles during a pivotal period of Russia's development and resonates with the current debates over the role of women in warfare.

Описание: St Petersburg - the "Paris on the Neva" - escapes all attempts to label it. Perhaps the most appropriate definition of the city is "a dream come true." The capital of Peter the Great is the most aristocratic and elegant city in Russia, and the northernmost metropolis in Europe. This title talks about St Petersburg, the city of the Hermitage.
