Описание: Russia's Dangerous Texts examines the ways that writers and their works unnerved and irritated Russia's authoritarian rulers both before and after the
Revolution. Kathleen F. Parthe identifies ten historically powerful beliefs about literature and politics in Russia, which include a view of the artistic text as national territory, and the belief
that writers must avoid all contact with the state.
Parthe offers a compelling analysis of the power of Russian literature to shape national identity despite sustained efforts to
silence authors deemed subversive. No amount of repression could prevent the production, distribution, and discussion of texts outside official channels. Along with tragic stories of lost
manuscripts and persecuted writers, there is ample evidence of an unbroken thread of political discourse through art.
The book concludes with a consideration of the impact
of two centuries of dangerous texts on post-Soviet Russia.
Описание: In December 2013, David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War. "The Moscow Times" said it was not surprising he was expelled, it was surprising it took so long. Satter is known in Russia for having written that the apartment bombings in 1999, which were blamed on Chechens and brought Putin to power, were actually carried out by the Russian FSB security police. In this book, Satter tells the story of the apartment bombings and how Boris Yeltsin presided over the criminalization of Russia, why Vladimir Putin was chosen as his sucessor, and how Putin has suppressed all opposition while retaining the appreance of a pluralist state. As the threat represented by Russia becomes increasingly clear, Satter s description of where Russia is and how it got there will be of vital interest to anyone concerned about the dangers facing the world today."
Описание: Women have participated in war throughout history, but their experience in Russia during the First World War was truly exceptional. Between the war's
beginning and the October Revolution of 1917, approximately 6,000 women answered their country's call. These courageous women became media stars throughout Europe and
America, but were brushed aside by Soviet chroniclers and until now have been largely neglected by history.
Laurie Stoff draws on deep archival research into previously
unplumbed material, including many first-person accounts, to examine the roots, motivations, and legacy of these women. She reveals that Russia was the only nation in World War I
that systematically employed women in the military, marking the first time that a government run by men had organized women for combat. And although they were originally envisioned
as propaganda - promoting patriotism and citizenship to inspire the thousands of males who had been deserting or refusing to fight - Russian women also proved themselves more than
capable in combat.
Describing the formation, provisioning, and training of the units, Stoff sheds light on their social and educational backgrounds, while recounting a number
of amazing individual stories. She tells how Maria Bochkareva, commander of the First Russian Women's Battalion of Death, and her unit met its baptism of fire in combat and how
Bochkareva later traveled to the U.S. and met President Wilson.
We also meet Maria Bocharnikova, who served with the First Petrograd Women's Battalion that defen
ed the Winter Palace during the Bolshevik Revolution. Stoff also chronicles the exploits of the Second Moscow Women's Battalion of Death, Third Kuban Women's Shock Battalion,
and the First Women's Naval Detachment. Stoff's remarkable account rescues from oblivion an important but still little-known aspect of Russia's experience in World War I.
also provides new insights into gender roles during a pivotal period of Russia's development and resonates with the current debates over the role of women in warfare.
Описание: In England, gardening and garden-visiting are national obsessions. More than 80 years ago, the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) was founded with the aim of raising money for charity by opening gardens of quality and interest to the public. In the first year, some 600 gardens were opened. Today, over 3800 gardens – many of them privately owned and opened for just a few days each year – are listed in The Yellow Book, the annual guide published by the NGS. The Gardens of England gives you the opportunity to enjoy 50 of the country’s greatest garden gems from the comfort of your armchair. Each of the five chapters is written by a different leading gardens expert, and surveys 10 gardens opened as part of the NGS during a particular period. George Plumptre, Chief Executive of the NGS, provides an engaging introduction on garden-visiting, and 12 well-known gardeners offer a personal account of their favourite NGS garden. Featuring established and new gardens of all styles, this is a book that no lover of the English garden should be without.
