Описание: This book is a critical study of the work of Gregory Rabassa, translator of such canonical novels as Gabriel Garc a M rquezs Cien a os de soledad, Jos Lezama Limas Paradiso, and Julio Cort zars Rayuela. During the past five decades, Rabassa has translated over fifty Latin American novels and to this day he is one of the most prominent English translators of literature from Spanish and Portuguese. Rabassas role was pivotal in the internationalization of several Latin American writers; it led to the formation of a canon and, significantly, to the most prevalent image of Latin American literature in the world. Even though Rabassas legacy has been widely recognized, the extent of his works influence and the complexity of the sociocultural circumstances surrounding his practice have remained largely unexamined. In Gregory Rabassas Latin American Literature: A Translators Visible Legacy, Mar a Constanza Guzm n examines the translators conceptions about language, contextualizes his work in terms of the structures and conditions that have surrounded his practice, and investigates the role his translations have played in constructing collective narratives of Latin American literature in the global imaginary. By revisiting and historicizing the translators practice, this book reveals the scale of Rabassas legacy. The translator emerges as an active subject in the inter-American literary exchange, an agent bound to history and to the forces involved in the production of culture.

Описание:

On publication in 2009 John Hattie's Visible Learning presented the biggest ever collection of research into what actually work in schools to improve children's learning. Not what was fashionable, not what political and educational vested interests wanted to champion, but what actually produced the best results in terms of improving learning and educational outcomes. It became an instant bestseller and was described by the TES as revealing education's 'holy grail'.

Now in this latest book, John Hattie has joined forces with cognitive psychologist Greg Yates to build on the original data and legacy of the Visible Learning project, showing how it's underlying ideas and the cutting edge of cognitive science can form a powerful and complimentary framework for shaping learning in the classroom and beyond.

Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn explains the major principles and strategies of learning, outlining why it can be so hard sometimes, and yet easy on other occasions. Aimed at teachers and students, it is written in an accessible and engaging style and can be read cover to cover, or used on a chapter-by-chapter basis for essay writing or staff development.

The book is structured in three parts - 'learning within classrooms', 'learning foundations', which explains the cognitive building blocks of knowledge acquisition and 'know thyself' which explores, confidence and self-knowledge. It also features extensive interactive appendices containing study guide questions to encourage critical thinking, annotated bibliographic entries with recommendations for further reading, links to relevant websites and YouTube clips. Throughout, the authors draw upon the latest international research into how the learning process works and how to maximise impact on students, covering such topics as:

  • teacher personality;
  • expertise and teacher-student relationships;
  • how knowledge is stored and the impact of cognitive load;
  • thinking fast and thinking slow;
  • the psychology of self-control;
  • the role of conversation at school and at home;
  • invisible gorillas and the IKEA effect;
  • digital native theory;
  • myths and fallacies about how people learn.

This fascinating book is aimed at any student, teacher or parent requiring an up-to-date commentary on how research into human learning processes can inform our teaching and what goes on in our schools. It takes a broad sweep through findings stemming mainly from social and cognitive psychology and presents them in a useable format for students and teachers at all levels, from preschool to tertiary training institutes.

Описание:

Revising and Editing for Translators provides guidance and learning materials for translation

students learning to edit texts written by others, and professional translators wishing to improve

their self-revision ability or learning to revise the work of others. Editing is understood as

making corrections and improvements to texts, with particular attention to tailoring them to

the given readership. Revising is this same task applied to draft translations. The linguistic work

of editors and revisers is related to the professional situations in which they work.

Mossop offers in-depth coverage of a wide range of topics, including copyediting, style editing,

structural editing, checking for consistency, revising procedures and principles, and translation

quality assessment. This third edition provides extended coverage of computer aids for

revisers, and of the different degrees of revision suited to different texts. The inclusion of

suggested activities and exercises, numerous real-world examples, a proposed grading scheme

for editing assignments, and a reference glossary make this an indispensable coursebook for

professional translation programmes.

Описание: “The Translator’s Doubts” singles out translation as a way of talking about literary history and theory, philosophy, and interpretation, with the work of Vladimir Nabokov as its “case study.” It is hard to separate Nabokov from the act of translation, in all senses of the word—ranging from “moving across” geographical borders and cultural and linguistic boundaries to the transferring of the split between “here” and “there” and “then” and “now.” Investigating translation as a transformational rather than mimetic experience allows us to understand the strikingly original end-result: in what emerges, both the “target language” and the “native” language undergo something new that dispenses with the quest for and the “anxiety” of influences. In this sense Nabokov constitutes a perfect object for comparativist study since his oeuvre offers us the unique opportunity to look at his major texts twice: as originals and as translations.
