Описание: This volume is part of a four-volume series about art and its interpretation in the 19th and 20th centuries. The books provide an introduction to modern European and American art and criticism that should be valuable both to students and to the general reader. The book presents a survey of art from the first two decades of the 20th century. The authors begin by exploring how aspects of the primitive were invoked by rural artists' colonies formed in France and Germany at the end of the 19th century and by the work of the Fauves and the German Expressionists a few years later. The book then develops an analysis of Cubist works based on semiotic theory, considering the social and cultural values encoded in such signifying systems, and investigating the relationship between representation and ideology. The final chapter considers some problems of interpretation and evolution posed by specific examples of abstract art ranging from Malevich to Mondrian.

Описание: This volume will guide you in a fantastic voyage through the universe that surrounds us, into the mysteries of black holes, into explosions of gamma rays, to the nearby planets Mars, Saturn and Venus and on to the exoplanets. You'll be accompanied in the crossing by incredible images collected over the years by satellites, orbital telescopes, and the International Space Station, fixed on the incredible moments of the life above us. You'll visit Mars, the Red Planet, where the most recent space missions including NASA's Mars Curiosity mission have sought proof of the existence of some form of life: on November 26, 2011, Curiosity was launched from Cape Canaveral.
The Curiosity rover is a car-sized robotic rover exploring Gale Crater on Mars as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission (MSL). Moreover, you'll discover other marvels of the solar system, like Saturn's rings or the gases that envelop Jupiter. You'll retrace the main stages of the various explorations: from the first experimental launches of the 1950s, passing through the enterprises of Yuri Gagarin, the first man to orbit the Earth, and on to the race to conquer the moon in the 1960s.
You'll revisit the successes, achievements and accidents of the shuttles, the International Space Station, and the Hubble Space Telescope, and follow the itineraries of the probes reaching now to the edges of our Solar System. AUTHOR: Marcello D'Angelo was the American correspondent for Il Secolo XIX, head of the Home Affairs News Department for the AdnKronos news agency and also completed a traineeship with The Washington Post. Subsequently, he founded the communications company InMedia and then became head of External Relations for the Italian Space Agency.
SELLING POINTS: A fantastic journey through the solar system, from the Sun to Pluto, on to the ends of the universe. The entire history of space exploration, the secrets of black holes, gamma ray explosions, and curiosities about the individual planets, including the Mars mission with the Curiosity rover. Spectacular photographs taken from NASA archives.

Описание: This book explores the work of those artists who attempted to keep alive the expanded possibilities opened up by Cubism in Paris between 1911 and 1914. This little community of artists refused to accept that recording the war or producing propaganda was their duty. Instead, they kept faith in their independence as individuals as this war of machines threatened to rob every front-line soldier of his humanity and to draw the globe into unprecedented conflict. The vast majority of fit young Frenchmen were mobilized, so those artists left behind in Paris were either foreign or too old or unfit for combat. Pablo Picasso, then known as the inventor of Cubism, remained a prominent figure, alongside his fellow Spaniards Juan Gris and Mar a Blanchard, the Mexican Diego Rivera, the Italian Gino Severini, the Lithuanian sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and the French painters Georges Braque, Henri Laurens, Fernand L ger and Henri Matisse. One focus of this book is the sheer diversity of the work produced by these artists; another is the move made by most of them toward a more structured, architectural Cubism, especially from 1917, which could be taken as reparation against the destructive forces that seemed to have taken over the whole world.

Описание: This work seeks to transform our understanding of Cubism, showing in detail how it emerged in Picasso's work of the years 1906-13, and tracing its roots in
19th-century philosophy and linguistics. Linking well-known paintings and sculptures to the hitherto-ignored drawings that accompanied them, Pepe Karmel demonstrates how Picasso's
quest to depict the human body with greater solidity led, paradoxically, to its fragmentation; and how Picasso used the archaic model of stage space to free himself from conventional
perspective, replacing the open window of Renaissance painting with a new projective space. Rejecting the usual distinction between "analytic" and "synthetic" Cubism, Karmel shows
how Picasso's changing artistic goals were realized in the crystalline Cubism of 1907-09, the gridded Cubism of 1910-11, and the planar Cubism of 1912-13.
In other chapters,
Karmel discusses the empiricist philosophy championed by Hippolyte Taine, which encouraged the breakdown of painting into its abstract elements, and laid the groundwork for an art
of mental association rather than naturalistic figuration. Similarly, contemporary philology provided the model for a visual language employing both metaphoric and metonymic (but not
arbitrary) signs.
