Описание: In this book, Alexander Beecroft explores how the earliest poetry in Greece (Homeric epic and lyric) and China (the Canon of Songs) evolved from being local, oral, and anonymous to being textualised, interpreted, and circulated over increasingly wider areas. Beecroft re-examines representations of authorship as found in poetic biographies such as Lives of Homer and the Zuozhuan, and in the works of other philosophical and historical authors like Plato, Aristotle, Herodotus, Confucius, and Sima Qian. Many of these anecdotes and narratives have long been rejected as spurious or motivated by na?ve biographical criticism. Beecroft argues that these texts effectively negotiated the tensions between local and pan-cultural audiences. The figure of the author thus served as a catalyst to a sense of shared cultural identity in both the Greek and Chinese worlds. It also facilitated the emergence of both cultures as the bases for cosmopolitan world orders.

Описание: Marlowe`s Republican Authorship: Lucan, Liberty, and the Sublime is the first attempt to situate Marlowe`s well-known iconoclastic dissidence within the historical context of Elizabethan republican thought, revealing Marlowe to be the literary pioneer of a new form of republican art.
This book maps the history of literary celebrity from the early nineteenth century to the present, paying special attention to the authors’ crafting of their writerly self as well as the afterlife of their public image. Case studies are John Keats, Edgar Allan Poe, Eliza Cook, Herman Melville, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, J.D. Salinger and Zadie Smith.
Literary celebrity is part and parcel of modern literary culture, yet it continues to raise intriguing questions about the nature of authorship, writerly fame and the tension between authorial self-fashioning and public appropriation. This volume provides unique insights into the phenomenon.
Описание: This book brings new perspectives to the study of sensation fiction in the Victorian period. It examines Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Ellen Wood, and Florence Marryat`s magazines alongside their fiction to explore the self-conscious and complex ways they used sensation to re-work contemporary notions of female agency.
Описание: Craig, Kinney and their collaborators confront the main unsolved mysteries in Shakespeare’s canon through computer analysis of Shakespeare’s and other writers’ styles. In some cases their analysis confirms the current scholarly consensus, bringing long-standing questions to something like a final resolution. In other areas the book provides more surprising conclusions: that Shakespeare wrote the 1602 additions to The Spanish Tragedy, for example, and that Marlowe along with Shakespeare was a collaborator on Henry VI, Parts 1 and 2. The methods used are more wholeheartedly statistical, and computationally more intensive, than any that have yet been applied to Shakespeare studies. The book also reveals how word patterns help create a characteristic personal style. In tackling traditional problems with the aid of the processing power of the computer, harnessed through computer science, and drawing upon large amounts of data, the book is an exemplar of the new domain of digital humanities.

Braun draws together an eclectic body of literary writing and suggests that questions of authorship lie at the heart of Grass's work.

Описание: Re-situating Shakespeare as an early modern professional, Patrick Cheney views him not simply as a man of the theatre, but also as an author with a literary career. Rather than present himself as a national or laureate poet, as Spenser does, Shakespeare conceals his authorship through dramaturgy, rendering his artistic techniques and literary ambitions opaque. Accordingly, recent scholars have attended more to his innovative theatricality or his indifference to textuality than to his contribution to modern English authorship. By tracking Shakespeare’s ‘counter-laureate authorship’, Cheney builds upon his previous study on Shakespeare and literary authorship, and demonstrates the presence throughout the plays of sustained intertextual fictions about the twin media of printed poetry and theatrical performance. In challenging Spenser as England’s National Poet, Shakespeare reinvents English authorship as a key part of his legacy.
Описание: While authors in early modern England were gaining new authority - legally, economically, and symbolically - Renaissance readers also were expected to
participate in and make use of an author's writings. In this book, Stephen B. Dobranski examines how the seventeenth-century phenomenon of printing apparently unfinished works
ushered in a new emphasis on authors' responsibility for written texts while it simultaneously reinforced Renaissance practices of active reading.
Bringing together textual
studies, literary criticism, and book trade history, Dobranski provides fresh insight into Renaissance constructions of authorship and offers new, discerning interpretations of publications
by Sir Philip Sidney, Ben Jonson, John Donne, Robert Herrick, and John Milton. The omissions in all these writers' works provide a unique window into English literary history: through
these blank spaces we glimpse the tension between implication versus inference, between writers' intentions versus readers' responses, and between an individual author versus a
Описание: Speculative investment and the popular novel can be seen as analogous in the early eighteenth century in offering new forms of ‘paper credit’; and in both, women - who invested enthusiastically in financial schemes, and were significant producers and consumers of novels - played an essential role. Examining women’s participation in the South Sea Bubble and the representations of investors and stockjobbers as ‘feminized’, Catherine Ingrassia discusses the connection between the cultural resistance to speculative finance and hostility to the similarly ‘feminized’ professional writers that Alexander Pope depicts in The Dunciad. Focusing on Eliza Haywood, and also on her male contemporaries Pope and Samuel Richardson, Ingrassia goes on to illustrate how new financial and fictional models offered important models for women’s social, sexual, and economic interaction.

Описание: What is the history of authorship, of invention, of intellectual property? Joseph Loewenstein describes the fragmentary and eruptive emergence of a key phase of the bibliographical ego, a specifically Early Modern form of authorial identification with printed writing. In the work of many playwrights and non-dramatic writers - and especially that of Ben Jonson - that identification is tinged, remarkably, with possessiveness. This book examines the emergence of possessive authorship within a complex industrial and cultural field. It traces the prehistory of modern copyright both within the monopolistic practices of London’s acting troupes and its Stationers’ Company and within a Renaissance cultural heritage. Under the pressures of modern competition, a tradition of literary, artistic and technological imitation began to fissure, unleashing jealous accusations of plagiarism and ingenious new fantasies of intellectual privacy. Perhaps no-one was more creatively attuned to this momentous transformation in Early Modern intellectual life than Ben Jonson.

Описание: This book introduces a method for determining the authorship of Renaissance plays. Based on the rapid rate of change in English grammar in the late sixteenth- and early-seventeenth centuries, socio-historical linguistic evidence allows us to distinguish the hands of Renaissance playwrights within play texts. The present study focuses on Shakespeare: his collaborations with Fletcher and Middleton; and the apocryphal plays. Among the plays examined are Henry VIII, The Two Noble Kinsmen, Macbeth, Pericles and Sir Thomas More. The findings of the book allow us to be more confident about the divisions of the collaborative plays, and confirm the status of Edward III as a strong candidate for inclusion in the canon. Using graphs to present statistical data in a readily comprehensible form, the book also contains a wealth of information about the history of the English language during a period of rapid and far-reaching change.
