Описание: This is the first major book-length study for four decades to examine the plays written by D. H. Lawrence, and the first ever book to give an in-depth analysis of Lawrences interaction with the theatre industry during the early twentieth century. It connects and examines his performance texts, and explores his reaction to a wide-range of theatre (from the sensation dramas of working-class Eastwood to the ritual performances of the Pueblo people) in order to explain Lawrences contribution to modern drama.

F. R. Leavis influentially labelled the writer D. H. Lawrence: Novelist. But this book foregrounds Lawrences career as a playwright, exploring unfamiliar contexts and manuscripts, and drawing particular attention to his three most successful works: The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd, The Daughter-in-Law, and A Colliers Friday Night. It examines how Lawrences novels are suffused with theatrical thinking, revealing how Lawrences fictions - from his first published work to the last story that he wrote before his death - continually take inspiration from the playhouse.

The book also argues that, although Lawrence has sometimes been dismissed as a restrictively naturalistic stage writer, his overall oeuvre shows a consistent concern with theatrical experiment, and manifests affinities with the dramatic thinking of modernist figures including Brecht, Artaud, and Joyce. In a final section, the book includes contributions from influential theatre-makers who have taken their own cue from Lawrences work, and who have created original work that consciously follows Lawrence in making working-class life central to the public forum of the theatre stage.

Описание: In this comprehensive survey of the diverse, theatrically vital formal conventions of the drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, Lopez proposes that understanding the potential for theatrical failure - the way playwrights anticipated it and audiences responded to it - is crucial for understanding how the drama succeeded on the stage.

Описание: Drawing on unpublished archival material, this study offers a comprehensive assessment of the importance of theatrical performance in Vladimir Nabokov`s thinking and writing. Siggy Frank argues that despite Nabokov`s anti-theatrical stance as a drama critic, theatricality is actually at the heart of his own practice as both playwright and novelist.

Описание: This revelatory study explores how Scottish history plays, especially since the 1930s, raise issues of ideology, national identity, historiography, mythology, gender and especially Scottish language. Covering topics up to the end of World War Two, the book addresses the work of many key figures from the last century of Scottish theatre, including Robert McLellan and his contemporaries, and also Hector MacMillan, Stewart Conn, John McGrath, Donald Campbell, Bill Bryden, Sue Glover, Liz Lochhead, Jo Clifford, Peter Arnott, David Greig, Rona Munro and others often neglected or misunderstood.Setting these writers’ achievements in the context of their Scottish and European predecessors, Ian Brown offers fresh insights into key aspects of Scottish theatre. As such, this represents the first study to offer an overarching view of historical representation on Scottish stages, exploring the nature of ‘history’ and ‘myth’ and relating these afresh to how dramatists use – and subvert – them.Engaging and accessible, this innovative book will attract scholars and students interested in history, ideology, mythology, theatre politics and explorations of national and gender identity.
