Описание: Water treatment facilities collect, filter, and then pump water to all municipalities. As technological breakthroughs, legislation, or even population shifts occur, these facilities need to be updated or rebuilt, or new facilities need to be designed where none existed before.

Описание: This unique volume provides a comprehensive overview of all the major aspects of modern drinking water systems in the western European context. It not only
covers the theoretical principles, but also the historical background and practical aspects of design and operation, legislation, planning and finance of drinking water supply in its social
and economic context. The principles and practices are illustrated using experiences from The Netherlands.
The Dutch drinking water supply is well known for its multiple
barrier systems and high technical standards. The Dutch drinking water is of high quality and does not contain chlorine, and the Dutch therefore readily drink tap water and do not see
the need to buy bottled water or in-house filters, with their drawbacks on national economics, public health and the environme
t. This illustrative overview can be used as a reference for other countries and regions.

Описание: How oil volatility may lead to violence among oil powers
The world supply of oil is running out. Meanwhile, the balance of oil power is shifting away from the United States and the Arab states toward national oil companies (NOCs) in Russia, China, and some emerging economies in Africa and South America. As developing countries seek a middle-class existence, their demand for oil grows exponentially, causing oil prices to spiral, turning some into international bullies. Until another fuel is found the world risks being at the mercy of these tyrants whose insatiable appetites for higher oil prices heighten competition and spur the threat of violence, domestic as well as global.
In Seizing Power: The Grab for Global Oil Wealth, bestselling author Robert Slater:
Profiles petroaggressors like Russia's Putin, Venezuela's Chavez, and Iran s Ahmadinejad
Describes how oil-rich outlaw nations are using a valuable natural resource as a weapon in global politics
Warns that, as oil dwindles, these outlaw nations may turn upon one another in the fight for what oil is left
Seizing Power clearly explains why oil is potentially toxic to world stability.
Urban DC Microgrid: Intelligent Control and Power Flow Optimization" focuses on microgrids for urban areas, particularly associated with building-integrated photovoltaic and renewable sources. This book describes the most important problems of DC microgrid application, with grid-connected and off-grid operating modes, aiming to supply DC building distribution networks.
The book considers direct current (DC) microgrid to supply DC building distribution networks for positive energy buildings; dynamic interactions with the utility grid based on communication with the smart grid; supervisory control systems; and energy management. The global power system is exposed and the DC microgrid system is presented and analyzed with results and discussion, highlighting both the advantages and limitations of the concept. Coverage at the system level of microgrid control as well as the various technical aspects of the power system components make this a book interesting to academic researchers, industrial energy researchers, electrical power and power system professionals. Provides a strong overview of microgrid modellingDescribes the most important problems of DC microgrid application, with grid-connected and off-grid operating modes, aiming to supply DC building distribution networksOffers experimental problem examples and resultsIncludes supervisory control and energy management

How and why branded bottles of water have insinuated themselves into our daily lives, and what the implications are for safe urban water supplies.
How did branded bottles of water insinuate themselves into our daily lives? Why did water become an economic good -- no longer a common resource but a commercial product, in industry parlance a "fast moving consumer good," or FMCG? Plastic Water examines the processes behind this transformation. It goes beyond the usual political and environmental critiques of bottled water to investigate its multiplicity, examining a bottle of water's simultaneous existence as, among other things, a product, personal health resource, object of boycotts, and part of accumulating waste matter. Throughout, the book focuses on the ontological dimensions of drinking bottled water -- the ways in which this habit enacts new relations and meanings that may interfere with other drinking water practices.
The book considers the assemblage and emergence of a mass market for water, from the invention of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle in 1973 to the development of "hydration science" that accompanied the rise of jogging in the United States. It looks at what bottles do in the world, tracing drinking and disposal practices in three Asian cities with unreliable access to safe water: Bangkok, Chennai, and Hanoi. And it considers the possibility of ethical drinking, examining campaigns to "say no" to the bottle and promote the consumption of tap water in Canada, the United States, and Australia.

A study of water at the intersection of landscape and infrastructure in Paris, Berlin, Lagos, Mumbai, Los Angeles, and London.
Water lies at the intersection of landscape and infrastructure, crossing between visible and invisible domains of urban space, in the tanks and buckets of the global South and the vast subterranean technological networks of the global North. In this book, Matthew Gandy considers the cultural and material significance of water through the experiences of six cities: Paris, Berlin, Lagos, Mumbai, Los Angeles, and London. Tracing the evolving relationships among modernity, nature, and the urban imagination, from different vantage points and through different periods, Gandy uses water as a lens through which to observe both the ambiguities and the limits of nature as conventionally understood.
Gandy begins with the Parisian sewers of the nineteenth century, captured in the photographs of Nadar, and the reconstruction of subterranean Paris. He moves on to Weimar-era Berlin and its protection of public access to lakes for swimming, the culmination of efforts to reconnect the city with nature. He considers the threat of malaria in Lagos, where changing geopolitical circumstances led to large-scale swamp drainage in the 1940s. He shows how the dysfunctional water infrastructure of Mumbai offers a vivid expression of persistent social inequality in a postcolonial city. He explores the incongruous concrete landscapes of the Los Angeles River. Finally, Gandy uses the fictional scenario of a partially submerged London as the starting point for an investigation of the actual hydrological threats facing that city.
