Описание: This book is aimed at a large audience: from students, who have a high- school background in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and biology, to scien- tists working in the fields of biophysics and biochemistry. The main aim of this book is to attempt to describe, in terms of physical chemistry and chemi- cal physics, the peculiar features of "machines" having molecular dimen- sions which play a crucial role in the most important biological processes, viz., energy transduction and enzyme catalysis. One of the purposes of this book is to analyze the physical background of the high efficiency of molecu- lar machines functioning in the living cell. This book begins with a brief review of the subject (Chapter 1). Macro- molecular energy-transducing complexes operate with thermal, chemical, and mechanical energy, therefore the appropriate framework to discuss the functioning of biopolymers comes from thermodynamics and chemical kinet- ics. That is why we start our analysis with a consideration of the conventional approaches of thermodynamics and classical chemical kinetics, and their application to the description of bioenergetic processes (Chapter 2). Critical analysis of these approaches has led us to the conclusion that the conven- tional approaches of physical chemistry to the description of the functioning of individual macromolecular devices, in many cases, appear to be incom- plete. This prompted us to consider the general principles ofliving machinery from another point of view.

Hanson and his coworkers organized the First Interna- tional Symposium and the papers presented there were published in the book Intracellular Protein Catabolism, edited by H. Hanson and P. Bohley. In the preface of this book they concluded: "We hope, however, the symposium as well as the book will be the beginning of a series of symposia and their publication concerning intracellular protein catabolism. Описание: Most components of the biosphere are continuously ex­ posed to oxygen from the atmosphere. Accordingly, the inex­ orable deterioration of all organic compounds by the slow attack of oxygen must occur. Despite this eventuality, a definitive treatment of oxygen-dependent decomposition of any single important natural product has not heretofore been made. The instant monograph attempts to provide a complete description of the autoxidation of one such impor­ tantnatural product, cholesterol, as the matter is currently understood. The autoxidation of cholesterol in Nature has been a matter of interest to others since the close of the nine­ teenth century and to me for the past three decades. In this monograph I present aspects of what I have learned about cholesterol autoxidation during that interval. Be­ cause of the diffuse ann troublesoae nature of the subject I have selected to cite references to the literature rather fully, so that all items discussed may be properly evaluated by the interested reader. Though such extensive citation of references makes for labored reading, I hope the text will serve as a definitive treatment of the subject from which other studies may be engendered without extensive recourse to the older material. An .attempt has been made to include much related in­ formation so that a detailed awareness of the interrelation­ ships between cholesterol autoxidation and other aspects of chemistry, metabolism, and toxicology may be had. I risk teaching more on the subject than any reader care to learn.
