Описание: There is a growing need for knowledge and practical ideas about the preparation of teachers for English language learners (ELLs), a growing segment of the K-12 population in the United States. This book is for teachers, administrators, and teacher educators looking for innovative ways to prepare teachers for ELLs and will position teachers to empower these students. This volume will appeal mostly to those preparing teachers in contexts that have not have historically had large numbers of ELLs, but have had a high rate of recent growth (e.g., Midwestern U.S.). This work is the combination of teacher preparation and ELL issues. This volume is unique in tackling pre-service and in service teacher preparation. Additionally, the chapters collectively aim to go beyond merely equipping teachers to meet the needs of ELLs, but to reach a level of effectiveness with the outcome of equity. The book highlights the knowledge, skills, and beliefs of teachers about ELLs. Part I addresses teacher perceptions of, and beliefs about, ELLs and teacher preparation specifically addressing what they should know in terms of students’ perspectives. Chapters attend to the experiences and beliefs of immigrant teachers about their roles, the role of service learning in teacher preparation, and the potential of understanding home literacy practices to change teacher beliefs about ELLs. Part II focuses on skills necessary to teach ELLs—writing skills teachers can draw on to inform their teaching practices, technological skills teachers need to develop, and skills related to focusing on the Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics. Each chapter explicitly addresses implications for teacher education or professional development.

Описание: Grounded in the best peer-reviewed research, each strategy presents guidelines and appropriate precautions to ensure successful transfer to actual classroom practice.
This book offers the Teach Plus curriculum for amplifying teacher voice and creating more teacher leaders. It's a one-stop shop for educators who are interested in learning about the big picture in K12 education, and how they can affect it. It includes a clear view of Policy and Advocacy; a Teacher Leader How-To Guide; and stories from the trenches in getting teachers seats at decision-making tables across the nation. The book is structured with 10 chapters that correspond to the top ten things teachers need to know and be able to do to be effective change leaders. Each chapter is anchored with a story of effective teacher advocacy.
Teacher interest in taking greater leadership over the issues that affect American classrooms is at an all-time high. At the same time, teacher union strength and teacher morale have reached all-time lows. Teachers are seeking expanded influence and coming up short. Most teachers lack the knowledge and skills to be effective in advocating for their students' needs as well as their own. In some areas of education reform, teacher actions are increasing the odds that practitioners will be excluded from the decision-making table in the future. Teacher voice is essential to good education policy, yet teachers need new information to move from being perceived as the "party of no" to being recognized for their problem-solving ability.
Despite the obstacles, some teachers are having success advocating for important changes on behalf of their students and their profession. What makes these teachers different? They have learned the unwritten rules and tacit knowledge that governs decision-making in education. They have a playbook that gets them a seat at the decision-making table and results that benefit their students. Their experiences can point a way forward, and empower all teachers.

Описание: Mathematics education is one of the most important but least understood subjects of our age. As science and technology move the world from the age of machines to the age of computers, basic education in the language of science, technology and computers takes on increased importance. In both developed and developing nations, more people than ever before are seeking edu- cation in mathematics. Yet there are numerous signs that world-wide mathematics education is of very uneven quality, not attuned to the needs of contemporary society: declining scores on standardized examS7 diminishing number of certified mathematics teach- erS7 public outcry at failures of the "new math"7 professional concern with problem solving and applications of mathematics7 uncertainty about the relation of computers and calculators to mathematics instruction. It was in this context of rising expectations and mounting problems that over 2000 mathematicians and mathematics teachers from ar. ound the world gathered in August, 1980, at the University of California in Berke- ley, California, for the Fourth International Congress of Mathematical Education CIeME IV).
