Описание: From its introduction, oncological chemotherapy has been encumbered by its poor selectivity because most antiproliferative drugs are toxic not only to tumor cells but also to important populations of the body’s non-neoplastic cells. The resultant problems with unwanted side effects are compounded by difficulties in predicting the desired effectivity of chemotherapy in individual patients. This unsatisfactory situation has driven intensive research and development towards more specific and less toxic anticancer drugs over the last few decades. Several results of these efforts have reached the clinic and an even greater number are now in preclinical testing. Common to all these targeted therapies is their interaction with defined molecules present on cancer cells, which adds various degrees of increased selectivity to their toxic effects. As a consequence, detecting the target molecule on tumors before therapy holds great diagnostic potential for predicting the efficacy of the drug and personalizing therapy. This book aims to present translational scientists and clinicians with an integrated critical view on the theories, mechanisms, problems and pitfalls of the targeted therapy approach.

Описание: The most attractive feature of miRNAs is that one miRNA can regulate many target genes (mRNAs) and thus miRNA targeted therapy is highly promising because multiple genes could be regulated by targeting a single miRNA, which becomes very important for the killing of highly heterogeneous populations of cancer cells within a tumor mass.

Описание: This critical review volume explores the theme of ABC transporters in the context of basic cancer research and its role in drug-resistant tumors. The chapters provided complement basic research by including investigations from translational applications to clinical oncology. The development of resistance is a major obstacle in cancer chemotherapy and the field has been moving rapidly in terms of determining the mechanisms for blocking ABC transporter-mediated drug efflux by specific inhibitors and thereby overcoming multidrug resistance. The volume covers these issues in careful detail. Additional topics include the relevance of ABC transporters in resistance to novel and established anticancer drugs and prognosis of patients to compounds, compounds used in photodynamic therapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors and others. Furthermore, the potential of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis of multidrug-resistant tumors and of nanotechnology to combat drug-resistant tumors is also discussed.
Описание: This book explores different approaches to develop phthalocyanine-based photosensitizers toward dual and targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT), with a view to improving their specific delivery to cancerous tissues and efficiency in PDT.
