Описание: Focuses on applications of demographic models, extending to matrix models for stage-classified populations. This book introduces the life table to describe age-specific mortality, and develops theory for stable populations and the rate of population increase. It also introduces reproductive value and the stable equivalent population.

Описание: The authors of this work use a novel strategy that combines record linkage and demographic/statistical analysis to produce an internally consistent and robust set of estimates of the African-American population during the period 1930-1990. They interpret the record that emerges, with special reference to longevity trends and differentials.

Описание: The study of populations is becoming increasingly focused on dynamics. We believe there are two reasons for this trend. The ftrst is the impactof nonlinear dynamics with its exciting ideas and colorful language: bifurcations, domains of attraction, chaos, fractals, strange attractors. Complexity, which is so very much a part of biology, now seems to be also a part of mathematics. A second trend is the accessibility of the new concepts. Thebarriers tocommunicationbetween theoristandexperimentalistseemless impenetrable. The active participationofthe experimentalist means that the theory will obtain substance. Our role is the application of the theory of dynamics to the analysis ofbiological populations. We began our work early in 1979 by writing an ordinary differential equation for the rateofchange in adult numbers which was based on an equilibrium model proposed adecadeearlier. Duringthenextfewmonths weftlledournotebookswithstraightforward deductions from the model and its associated biological implications. Slowly, some of the biological observations were explained and papers followed on a variety of topics: genetic and demographic stability, stationary probability distributions for population size, population growth asabirth-deathprocess, natural selectionanddensity-dependent population growth, genetic disequilibrium, and the stationary stochastic dynamics of adult numbers.

Описание: Sustainability of pension systems, intergeneration fiscal equity under population aging, and accounting for health care benefits for future retirees are examples of problems that cannot be solved without understanding the nature of population forecasts and their uncertainty. Similarly, the accuracy of population estimates directly affects both the distributions of formula-based government allocations to sub-national units and the apportionment of political representation. The book develops the statistical foundation for addressing such issues. Areas covered include classical mathematical demography, event history methods, multi-state methods, stochastic population forecasting, sampling and census coverage, and decision theory. The methods are illustrated with empirical applications from Europe and the U.S.For statisticians the book provides a unique introduction to demographic problems in a familiar language. For demographers, actuaries, epidemiologists, and professionals in related fields, the book presents a unified statistical outlook on both classical methods of demography and recent developments. To facilitate its classroom use, exercises are included. Over half of the book is readily accessible to undergraduates, but more maturity may be required to benefit fully from the complete text. Knowledge of differential and integral calculus, matrix algebra, basic probability theory, and regression analysis is assumed.

Описание: This book of problems has been designed to accompany an undergraduate course in probability. It will also be useful for students with interest in probability who wish to study on their own. The only prerequisite is basic algebra and calculus. This includes some elementary experience in set theory, sequences and series, functions of one variable, and their derivatives. Familiarity with integrals would be a bonus. A brief survey of terminology and notation in set theory and calculus is provided. Each chapter is divided into three parts: Problems, Hints, and Solutions. To make the book reasonably self-contained, all problem sections include expository material. Definitions and statements of important results are interlaced with relevant problems. The latter have been selected to motivate abstract definitions by concrete examples and to lead in manageable steps toward general results, as well as to provide exercises based on the issues and techniques introduced in each chapter. The hint sections are an important part of the book, designed to guide the reader in an informal manner. This makes Probability Through Prob- lems particularly useful for self-study and can also be of help in tutorials. Those who seek mathematical precision will find it in the worked solutions provided. However, students are strongly advised to consult the hints prior to looking at the solutions, and, first of all, to try to solve each problem on their own.
