In recent years, a tremendous amount of effort has been focused on better understanding the fundamentals of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis and appropriately targeted therapeutic treatments. Alzheimer's Disease: Targets for New Clinical, Diagnostic, and Therapeutic Strategies provides a detailed synopsis of the current state of the art of diagnostics and therapeutics and identifies emerging technologies and molecules that show promise in the management and treatment of AD.
With contributions from experts drawn from academia, clinical practice, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, the book explores:
The basis of AD and the role of Aβ oligomers in development of disease
Existing and emerging in vitro biomarker-based methodologies for the diagnosis of AD, focusing on genetic, biochemical, and conformational strategies
In vivo imaging diagnostic approaches
Evolving diagnostic criteria, health regulatory guidelines, biomarkers in clinical trials, and available and emerging therapies
Recent progress in small-molecule disease-modifier drug discovery efforts for AD, specifically in the areas of Aβ, tau, and emerging neuroprotective/neurorepair approaches
How a case study of AD raises issues regarding clinical and pathologic criteria, risk factors, and the amyloid hypothesis
The molecular conformational factors that govern the pathogenicity of aggregating proteins, and how these factors could represent new targets for disease-modifying therapies
The latest epidemiological, pathological, biochemical, and behavioral studies that may shed some light on the risk of developing AD and similar dementias after traumatic brain injury
Examining current hypotheses and suggesting possible new approaches to therapeutic clinical applications, this volume paves the way for a robust pipeline of therapeutics to combat not only AD, but a whole host of other neurodegenerative diseases.

Описание: Discusses the potential involvement of neurogenic inflammation in the pathogenesis of the migraine headache and the inhibition of this mechanism as a possible mode of action of anti migraine medications. This book also addresses the impact of migraine on a personal and societal level, the presentation, pathogenesis, and treatment of migraine.

Описание: Veteran clinicians offer a unique framework for understanding the psychological origins of behaviors typical of Alzheimer's and other dementias, and for providing appropriate care for patients as they decline. Guidelines are rooted in the theory of retrogenesis in dementia--that those with the condition regress in stages toward infancy--as well as knowledge of associated brain damage. The objective is to meet patients where they are developmentally to best be able to address the tasks of their daily lives, from eating and toileting to preventing falls and wandering. This accessible information gives readers a platform for creating strategies that are respectful, sensitive, and tailored to individual needs, thus avoiding problems that result when care is ineffective or counterproductive. Featured in the coverage: * Abilities and disabilities during the different stages of Alzheimer's disease. * Strategies for keeping the patient's finances safe. * Pain in those with dementia, and why it is frequently ignored. * "Help! I've lost my mother and can't find her!" * Sexuality and intimacy in persons with dementia. * Instructive vignettes of successful caring interventions. Given the projected numbers of individuals expected to develop dementing conditions, Care Giving for Alzheimer’s Disease will find immediate interest among clinical psychologists, health psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and primary care physicians.
Описание: Dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT), multiinfarct dementia (MID) and dementia occurring in the course of Parkinson's disease (PD +D) now make up one of the largest categories of chronic diseases in the elderly. In addition to the burden those illnesses impose on the affected individuals and their families they consume large socio-economic re- sources. In the light of all the above mentioned features, it seemed to us that a Symposium on behalf of the 125th Anniversary of Birth of Aloys Alzheimer was particularly well-suited to help to advance research on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. This International Symposium combined with a Satellite Symposium about "Clinical Aspects of Alz- heimer Dementias" took place in June 1989 in Wiirzburg and has been organized by the Psychiatric Departments of the Universities of Wiirzburg and Munich (H. Beckmann, K. Maurer, P. Riederer, H. Hippius and H. Lauter) and the Department of Pathochemistry and General Neurochemistry of the University of Heidelberg (S. Hoyer). In the chapters which follow, thorough reviews of recognized authorities in the field of dementia are given in the four main fields of epidemiology, neuropathology, neurochemistry and clinics. This Symposium and the edition of this book would not have been possible without the generous support of E. Merck, Darmstadt. In particular we gratefully acknowledge the efforts undertaken by Mr. Hernandez-Meyer to organizing this symposium and to publish this book. Furthermore we are grateful to the secretarial help by Mrs. Moeslein, Miss Philipp and Miss Grabner.

Описание: From large cross-sectional studies of autopsy material, it seems as if a time course of Alzheimer`s Disease, at least on average, can be mapped out: a pattern of hierarchical vulnerability for neuronal loss and neurofibrillary tangles beginning in medial temporal lobe structures proceeding through association areas.

Описание: Based on the 2nd International Symposium on EBEWE Research Initiative held in Salzburg, Austria, 1993, this book is a review of the current knowledge of morphology, diagnostic clinical and imaging techniques, and outcome variables and possibilities of therapy of AD and other neurodisorders.
Описание: This volume contains the proceedings of the ninth "Colloque medecine et recherche" of the Fondation IPSEN devoted to research on Alzheimer's disease. This symposium was held in Lyon on June 21, 1993, on the topic, "Amyloid Protein Precursors in Development, Aging and Alzheimer's Disease". The choice of this venue and of this particular subject was not a matter of chance. As far as the history of medicine and neurology is concerned, Lyon is doubtless one of the most famous cities in France and the F ondation IPSEN had to organize one of its meetings in this city which has been regarded for centuries as a major crossroads. Regarding the topic, the amyloid story is at the center of the debate in the field of Alzheimer's studies. For nearly 10 years, "alzheimerology" has more or less been intertwined with "amyloidology". The purification and the sequencing of the beta/ A4 peptide in amyloid congophilic angiopathy (Glenner and Wong 1984) and in Alzheimer's disease (Masters et al. 1985) were the first steps toward the numerous successes realised in the last few years. The discovery of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), the localisation of its gene on chromosome 21 and the sequencing of its cDNA in 1987 (Kang et al. 1987; Goldgaber et al. 1987; Robakis et al.
