Описание: Antibiotics have indeed brought unprecedented health benefits, protection from and cure of bacterial diseases during the past 50 years. They are crum- bling because we wittingly or unwittingly created selective con- ditions for the emergence of superior pathogens that can no longer be controlled by antibiotics.

Описание: This detailed volume presents timely and authoritative content offering a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in fungal diagnostics. Moreover, it addresses on-going developments expected to provide a basis for targeted treatment strategies resulting in improved outcome of invasive mycoses. The knowledge of host-related predisposing factors and stratified treatment options facilitating timely onset of adequate antifungal therapy are critical for successful clinical management and outcome of invasive fungal disease (IFD), requiring not only rapid diagnosis of a fungal infection and identification of the causative species, but also assessment of pathogen/host factors related to pathogenicity, susceptibility, and response to treatment. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.
Authoritative and practical, Human Fungal Pathogen Identification: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal reference for researchers investigating the ever-growing worldwide healthcare problems involving fungal infections.

Описание:
Escherichia coli is a facultative anaerobic Gamma-proteobacterium, which belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. While being an important constituent of the normal gut microbiota, specialized E. coli clones have acquired genetic elements that allow them to compete with the endogenous commensals, colonise normally sterile niches and cause disease. E. coli pathotypes can cause intestinal and extra intestinal infections (e.g. UTI, sepsis) and associate with mammalian cells while being extra- or intra-cellular. In recent years, E. coli infections have become a serious clinical problem, due to the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance. Thus, infections with intestinal E. coli (e.g. E. coli O104) or extraintestinal pathogenic strains (e.g. E. coli ST131) are becoming difficult to treat and are often lethal. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop alternative control measures, including the identification of new drug targets and development of vaccines that offer lasting protection. This volume focuses on several types of E. coli infections (intestinal and extraintestinal), virulence factors, and E. coli pandemics. It addresses the problem of antibiotic resistance, and a dedicated chapter discusses the need to develop alternative control measures. Given its depth and breadth of coverage, the book will benefit all those interested in the biology, genetics, physiology and pathogenesis of E. coli, and in related vaccine development.

Описание: This book summarizes the progress in studies of tuberculosis host-pathogen interactions from several perspectives: molecular microbiology, immunology, animal models, clinical studies, epidemiology, and drug discovery. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a severe global public health problem. Complex interactions between environmental, microbial and host factors lead to clinically relevant infections. Studies on bacterial virulence, host-genetic, and immunological factors contributing to the susceptibility to TB provide an ever-growing foundation of knowledge that is critical to finding new interventions. Studies of immune mechanisms against M. tuberculosis infection have identified immunological markers associated with specific phenotypes in the host, providing insight into how they may be used to augment current treatment strategies. Recent advances in diagnosis, therapeutics and vaccines, as well as basic-research oriented studies have shed light on the development of new directions for prevention, treatment and control of TB. Improved understanding of the interplay between the bacterium and host is a key component of reducing incidence worldwide.
Описание: This book provides an extensive review of research into Campylobacter, Helicobacter and Arcobacter species found in poultry. It includes the epidemiology, diagnosis, immune response and disease control of these organisms in commercial poultry production. Antimicrobial resistance, and the incidence and human disease potential of these bacteria is also discussed. A global perspective is presented by experts from four continents – South America, North America, Europe and Africa. This reference work will be of value to the poultry industry, research laboratories, public health workers and students. An extensive overview of the relevant literature is provided by the reference lists at the end of each chapter.

Streptococcus is a diverse genus of Gram-positive bacteria commonly found in multiple locations of their human and animal hosts e.g. the oral cavity and the upper respiratory tract. Many streptococci are commensals thus play a role in colonization resistance of the host. Others, however, are pathogenic and are responsible for a range of invasive and noninvasive diseases with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Streptococci undergo frequent and extensive horizontal gene transfer leading to the emergence of drug resistant strains. This, combined with the current lack of effective anti-streptococcal vaccines, has led to a huge amount of research into the genomics to systems biology of these important bacteria. This timely review, edited by Yuqing Li and Xuedong Zhou, provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge of the most important hot-topics in streptococcal research. Topics covered include: CRISPR-Cas systems; genetic regulation by small RNAs; signal transduction by cyclic dinucleotide second messengers; the VicRK and ComDE two-component systems; mobile genetic elements; regulation of cell division; application of omics and bioinformatics tools; intrageneric and intergeneric interactions by oral streptococci; the hypervirulent M1T1 clone of GAS; Streptococcus suis; adhesion and invasion mechanisms; molecular evolution of pathogenic streptococci; novel antimicrobials; vaccine development. This volume is essential reading for everyone working with streptococci from the PhD student to the experienced scientist, in academia, the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries and for those working in clinical environments.
