The book is structured in six parts, each one covering a specific research line which represents a trend in future manufacturing: (1) Holonic and Agent-based Industrial Automation Systems; (2) Service-oriented Management and Control of Manufacturing Systems; (3) Distributed Modelling for Safety and Security in Industrial Systems; (4) Complexity, Big Data and Virtualization in Computing-oriented Manufacturing; (5) Adaptive, Bio-inspired and Self-organizing Multi-Agent Systems for Manufacturing and (6) Physical Internet Simulation, Modelling and Control.
There is a clear orientation of the SOHOMA'14 workshop towards complexity, which is a common view of all six parts. There is need for a framework allowing the development of manufacturing cyber physical systems including capabilities for complex event processing and data analytics which are expected to move the manufacturing domain closer towards cloud manufacturing within contextual enterprises. Recent advances in sensor, communication and intelligent computing technologies made possible the Internet connectivity of the physical world: the Physical Internet, where not only documents and images are created, shared, or modified in the cyberspace, but also the physical resources and products interact over Internet and make decisions based on shared communication.

Recent research has been focusing on the study of alliances as vehicles to boost competitive - or better: collaborative - advantage. Moving beyond the dyadic level, corporate networks have become a very popular field of research. Whereas a lot of research has already been done on costs and benefits of networks, little has been said about the alignment of network configuration (e. g. the mix of strong and weak ties or the quantity and diversity of ties) and strategic orientation. Since different network configurations bring about distinct benefits for the collaborating partners, the fit between strategic goals and network configuration influences whether and how value is generated on a firm and dyadic level. Katharina Wratschko combines Transaction Cost Theory and Resource Based Theory with Social Network Theory to analyze this question theoretically. Her ambitious work reveals important insights on how focal firms build and design their alliance networks to match their strategic resource needs. Based on a sound theoretical analysis she develops a set of hypotheses which are empirically tested using data from the pharmaceutical industry. The quality of insights and results derived from this work prove that Katharina Wratschko is not only a highly dedicated but also a very inspiring researcher. Allein diese Bestandsaufnahme staBt auf erhebliehe Sehwierigkeiten, die nur mit kritisehen experimen- tellen und einwandfreien statistisehen Methoden fiberwunden werden konnen. Ein weiterer Sehritt ist die Bestimmung der sinnesphysio- logisehen Leistungen, die an den Orientierungsvorgangen beteiligt sind. Die Kenntnis der Phanomene und der reeeptorischen V oraussetzungen der Orientierung stellen aber erst den Anfang dar. In erster Linie sind es zentralnervose Vorgange, die eine Orientierung ermogliehen. Hier spielt die zentrale Verreehnung der sinnesphysiologisehen Daten, hier spielen Regelvorgange und es spielen - bisher kaum bekannt, noeh weniger analysiert - autonome zentralnervose Prozesse eine ent- seheidende Rolle. Daher sind Sinnesphysiologie, Verhaltensforsehung, Neurophysiologie, Kybernetik, Biophysik und mathematisehe Statistik in gleieher Weise an der Erforsehung der Orientierungsleistungen be- teiligt.
