'Ageing, Corporeality and Embodiment' argues that both ageing as a unitary social process and agedness as a distinct social location have become fragmented. The book concentrates on the emergence of a 'new ageing' mediated in part through the processes of 'embodiment'.
The first section provides the main theoretical context for the book, with the first chapter outlining the new 'sociology of the body' and the second outlining the emergence of new ageing and its 're-orientation' toward the body. The second section explores the relationship between new ageing and key aspects of embodied identity, namely gender, race, disability and sexuality. In each of these sections, the authors provide a brief historical perspective on the emergence of these embodied identities as social movements during the cultural ferment of the 1960s, and explore their subsequent confrontation, or avoidance of confrontation with, the issue of ageing.
The third section covers embodied practices, from sexual practice and its re-orientation toward age and ageing, to the embodied practices of 'appearance management', particularly those associated with cosmetics, clothing and fashion. Finally, the book considers 'new enhancement technologies' of the body, such as plastic surgery, with relation to ideas of 'rejuvenation'. By focusing upon those embodied practices that are oriented toward age and ageing, and their place in expressing, maintaining or recreating other 'pre-performed' identities, the work allows a more embodied understanding of ageing and its diverse engagements within society to be realised.

Derived embodiment in abstract thought is a landmark synthesis that operationalizes contemporary neuroscience studies of acquisition of knowledge in the real life conversational context. Discursive accounts of the body have been prominent recently. While acknowledging the usefulness of these, the author, drawing upon specific philosophers of the body and a wide range of other theorists, focuses attention on the experiencing body - which she refers to as 'creatural existence'. Thinking in terms of the creatural, she argues, can better situate human beings in their environment, thus emphasizing a kind of 'ecological notion of subjectivity', in which place-based existence is understood anew.
The educational implications of focusing on what bodies 'do' and not so much in terms of how they are socially inscribed, presents them as practico-sensory totalities which should perhaps be seen as systems rather than an as a mere organism or entity. Such an articulation of creatural existence emphasizes animality, and in so doing reminds us of the centrality of the senses in all knowing and doing, including crucially, in relation to those practices which we have understood as 'work'. Multi-sensorial education is a major sub-theme of the book and the author argues persuasively for this by means of a critical analysis of the ocular centrism that is characteristic of contemporary culture.
With its strong philosophical anchoring and its judicial use of interdisciplinary sources this book will appeal to both undergraduate and graduate students and their teachers not only in the field of philosophy of education but those from many others disciplines. It will also interest primary and secondary school teachers, curriculum designers, and education policy makers.
