Описание:
The challenge of widening access and participation in higher education in a manner that ensures students are successful in their studies is a major issue globally and a significant research-focus within higher education studies and higher education policy. Similarly, the challenge of under-preparedness of students entering higher education has become increasingly pertinent as universities in both developed and developing countries struggle to improve their throughput rates in a context in which schooling no longer seems to provide sufficient preparation for entering university.
In this book Merridy Wilson-Strydom applies the capabilities approach to better understand university access and participation and draws on a rich case study from South Africa to critically and innovatively explore the complex and contradictory terrain of access with success. The book integrates quantitative and qualitative research with theory and practical application to provide a new framework for considering and improving the transition from school to university.
University Access and Success will appeal toacademics and researchers in the field of higher education internationally. The book also contributes to the growing body of international and comparative scholarship on the capabilities approach in higher education and will therefore be of value to higher education practitioners, such as those working in the promotion of teaching and learning, higher education quality assurance, institutional research and student affairs.

Описание: This book focuses on how to address persistent linguistically structured inequalities in education, primarily in relation to South African schools, but also in conversation with Australian work and with resonances for other multilingual contexts around the world. The book as a whole lays bare the tension between the commitment to multilingualism enshrined in the South African Constitution and language-in-education policy, and the realities of the dominance of English and the virtual absence of indigenous African languages in current educational practices. It suggests that dynamic plurilingual pedagogies can be allied with the explicit scaffolding of genre-based pedagogies to help redress asymmetries in epistemic access and to re-imagine policies, pedagogies, and practices more in tune with the realities of multilingual classrooms. The contributions to this book offer complementary insights on routes to improving access to school knowledge, especially for learners whose home language or language variety is different to that of teaching and learning at school. All subscribe to similar ideologies which include the view that multilingualism should be seen as a resource rather than a 'problem' in education. Commentaries on these chapters highlight evidence-based high-impact educational responses, and suggest that translanguaging and genre may well offer opportunities for students to expand their linguistic repertoires and to bridge epistemological differences between community and school. This book was originally published as a special issue of Language and Education.

Описание:
The disciplinary triad of open-access, multimodality, and writing center studies presents a timely, critical lens for discussing academic publishing in a moment of crucibilic change, where rapid technological advancements force scholars and institutions to question what is produced and "counts" as academic writing.
Using historiographic, quantitative, and qualitative analysis, Open-Access, Multimodality, and Writing Center Studies sees writing center scholarship as a microcosm of many of the larger issues at play in the contemporary academic publishing landscape. This case study approach reveals the complex, imbricated ways that questions about publishing manifest both within the content of journals, and as related to academics' perceptions as signifiers of disciplinary visibility, identity, and transformation.
More than just reaffirming the conventional wisdom about these changes in publishing--that these shifts are happening and we do not always know how to pinpoint them--Open-Access, Multimodality, and Writing Center Studies suggests that scholars in all fields, compositionists, and writing center practitioners be conscious of the ways they are complicit in maintaining barriers to accessibility and innovation.
