A consacrare il personaggio furono per ""Le sottili astutie di Bertoldo"" (1606) e ""Le piacevoli et ridicolose simplicit di Ber-toldino"" (1608) di Giulio Cesare Croce, cui Adriano Ban-chieri fece seguire la ""Novella di Cacasenno, figliuolo del semplice Bertoldino"" (pubblicata postuma nel 1641). Questa raccolta mantiene il titolo tradizionale di ""Bertoldo, Bertoldino e Cacasenno"", ma include anche la ""Continuazione e fine della storia di Cacasenno"", appositamente tradotta da un'edizione spagnola del 1864. Diverse frasi, presenti nel-l'edizione del 1606 del Bertoldo e soppresse in edizioni suc-cessive, sono state ripristinate. L'inclusione della quarta novella e le numerosissime e utili note, che hanno princi-palmente lo scopo di permettere al lettore una facile e pia-cevole lettura, rendono quest'opera originale.
