Описание:

The Glass Castle meets The Nest in this stunning debut, an intimate family memoir that gracefully brings us behind the dappled beachfront vista of privilege, to reveal the inner lives of two wonderfully colorful, unforgettable families.

On a mid-August weekend, two families assemble for a wedding at a rambling family mansion on the beach in East Hampton, in the last days of the areas quietly refined country splendor, before traffic jams and high-end boutiques morphed the peaceful enclave into the Hamptons. The weather is perfect, the tent is in place on the lawn.

But as the festivities are readied, the father of the bride, and pater familias of the beachfront manse, suffers a massive stroke from alcohol withdrawal, and lies in a coma in the hospital in the next town. So begins Jeanne McCullochs vivid memoir of her wedding weekend in 1983 and its after effects on her family, and the family of the groom. In a society defined by appearance and protocol, the wedding goes on at the insistence of McCullochs theatrical mother. Instead of a planned honeymoon, wedding presents are stashed in the attic, arrangements are made for a funeral, and a team of lawyers arrive armed with papers for McCulloch and her siblings to sign.

As McCulloch reveals, the repercussions from that weekend will ripple throughout her own family, and that of her in-laws lives as they grapple with questions of loyalty, tradition, marital honor, hope, and loss. Five years later, her own brief marriage ended, she returns to East Hampton with her mother to divide the wedding presents that were never opened.

Impressionistic and lyrical, at turns both witty and poignant, All Happy Families is McCullochs clear-eyed account of her struggle to hear her own voice amid the noise of social mores and family dysfunction, in a world where all that glitters on the surface is not gold, and each unhappy family is ultimately unhappy in its own unique way.

Описание: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named a Best Book of 2019 by TIME, Amazon, and The Washington Post

A Wired Must-Read Book of Summer

"Gretchen McCulloch is the internet's favorite linguist, and this book is essential reading. Reading her work is like suddenly being able to see the matrix." --Jonny Sun, author of everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too

Because Internet is for anyone who's ever puzzled over how to punctuate a text message or wondered where memes come from. It's the perfect book for understanding how the internet is changing the English language, why that's a good thing, and what our online interactions reveal about who we are.

Language is humanity's most spectacular open-source project, and the internet is making our language change faster and in more interesting ways than ever before. Internet conversations are structured by the shape of our apps and platforms, from the grammar of status updates to the protocols of comments and @replies. Linguistically inventive online communities spread new slang and jargon with dizzying speed. What's more, social media is a vast laboratory of unedited, unfiltered words where we can watch language evolve in real time.

Even the most absurd-looking slang has genuine patterns behind it. Internet linguist Gretchen McCulloch explores the deep forces that shape human language and influence the way we communicate with one another. She explains how your first social internet experience influences whether you prefer "LOL" or "lol," why sparkly tildes succeeded where centuries of proposals for irony punctuation had failed, what emoji have in common with physical gestures, and how the artfully disarrayed language of animal memes like lolcats and doggo made them more likely to spread.

Heather McCulloch is a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, and she teaches the Kids 4 Christ group at her church. McCulloch has always dreamed of writing children's books, but she never knew that God would call her to write a devotional soon after the birth of her third child. "This book was truly a work of God," she says. "He just used my hands to write His words. I praise Him and thank Him for pushing me to use the gift He gave me." While writing God's Little Creatures, McCulloch knew that God had called her to use her talents to reach others for His glory. Her children love this devotional book and ask her to read it to them every night.

Описание:

The Way of a Seabird is the story of a real life adventure.

Malcolm McCulloch at age forty-two was an airline captain at the top of his game. He had eighteen years left to serve in his career with Air Canada.

He also had dreams and aspirations for his life, which could only be realized by resigning from his lucrative occupation and allowing himself to interact with events randomly and spontaneously.

The author invites his readers to share the entirety of this thirty-year, inspirational journey as it unfolds throughout the book.

The narrative, teeming with anecdotes and sprinkled with the author's unique philosophy is a study of the determination never to lose track of life's short but noble experiment.

Описание: Embodiments of Mind, first published more than two decades ago, teems with intriguing concepts about the mind/brain that are highly relevant to current developments in neuroscience and neural networks.

Preface by Jerome Y. Lettvin. Warren S. McCulloch was an original thinker, in many respects far ahead of his time. Of all our contemporaries in brain research McCulloch is the most personal, idiosyncratic... he is at the center, the pivot of a whirligig of explosive thinking, wrote a colleague in 1966. Embodiments of Mind, first published more than two decades ago, teems with intriguing concepts about the mind/brain that are highly relevant to current developments in neuroscience and neural networks. In his preface to this timely reissue of McCulloch's work, Jerome Lettvin notes in particular that among the papers are two classics coauthored with Walter Pitts. One applies Boolean algebra to neurons considered as gates; another shows the kind of nervous circuitry that could be used in perceiving universals. These first models are part of the basis of artificial intelligence. McCulloch, who was a doctor, a philosopher, a teacher, a mathematician and a poet, terms his work experimental epistemology.

In this collection of 21 essays and lectures he pursues a physiological theory of knowledge that touches on philosophy, neurology, and psychology: There is one answer, only one, toward which I've groped for thirty years; to find out how brains work...Chapters range from What is a Number, that a Man May Know It, and a Man, that He May Know a Number, and Why the Mind is in the Head, to What the Frog's Eye Tells the Frog's Brain (with Jerome Lettvin, Humberto Maturana, and Walter Pitts), Machines that Think and Want, and A Logical Calculus of the Ideas Immanent in Nervous Activity (with Walter Pitts). Embodiments of Mind concludes with a selection of McCulloch's poems and sonnets.
