Описание: A Thousand Plateaus is the second part of Deleuze and Guattari's landmark philosophical project, Capitalism and Schizophrenia - a project that still sets the terms of contemporary philosophical debate. Written over a seven year period, A Thousand Plateaus provides a compelling analysis of social phenomena and offers fresh alternatives for thinking about philosophy and culture. Its radical perspective provides a toolbox for ‘nomadic thought' and has had a galvanizing influence on today's anti-capitalist movement.

Описание: Since its publication in 1968, Difference and Repetition, an exposition of the critique of identity, has come to be considered a contemporary classic in philosophy and one of Gilles Deleuze's most important works. The text follows the development of two central concepts, those of pure difference and complex repetition. It shows how the two concepts are related, difference implying divergence and decentring, repetition being associated with displacement and disguising. The work moves deftly between Hegel, Kierkegaard, Freud, Althusser and Nietzsche to establish a fundamental critique of Western metaphysics, and has been a central text in initiating the shift in French thought - away from Hegel and Marx, towards Nietzsche and Freud.
Описание: This book analyzes current ethical and scientific thinking about the morality of eating meat within an animal-rights framework, and re-evaluates perspectives on the moral status of animals. It will interest readers from academic disciplines including philosophy, animal studies, political science, and cultural studies.

Описание: The debate between faith and reason has been a dominant feature of Western thought for more than two millennia. This book takes up the problem of the relation between philosophy and theology and proposes that this relation can be reconceived if both philosophy and theology are seen as different ways of organising affects. Brent Adkins and Paul R. Hinlicky break new ground in this timely debate in two ways. Firstly, they lay bare the contemporary dependence on Kant and propose that our Kantian inheritance leaves us with an insuperable dualism. Secondly, the authors argue that the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze provides a way of resolving the debate between faith and reason that does justice to philosophy and theology by reconceiving of both as assemblages. Deleuze's philosophy differentiates domains of thought in terms of what they create. This seems like a particularly fruitful way to pursue the problem of the relations among philosophy and theology because it allows their distinction without at the same time placing them in opposition to one another.

Описание: A rich collection of critical essays, authored by philosophers and practicing artists, examining Deleuze and Guattari`s engagement with a broad range of art forms.
Описание: David Deamer establishes the first ever sustained encounter between Gilles Deleuze's Cinema books and post-war Japanese cinema, exploring how Japanese films responded to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From the early days of occupation political censorship to the social and cultural freedoms of the 1960s and beyond, the book examines how images of the nuclear event appear in post-war Japanese cinema.
Each chapter begins by focusing upon one or more of three key Deleuzian themes +" image, history and thought +" before going on to look at a selection of films from 1945 to the present day. These include movies by well-known directors Kurosawa Akira, Shindo Kaneto, Oshima Nagisa and Imamura Shohei; popular and cult classics +" Godzilla (1954), Akira (1988) and Tetsuo (1989); contemporary genre flicks +" Ring (1998), Dead or Alive (1999) and Casshern (2004); the avant-garde and rarely seen documentaries. The author provides a series of tables to clarify the conceptual components deployed within the text, establishing a unique addition to Deleuze and cinema studies.
Описание: In this book, a world-leading Ricoeur scholar examines Ricoeur`s philosophy in relation to other major figures in contemporary French philosophy including Bourdieu, Derrida, Deleuze, Foucault, and Castoriadis.
Описание: Deleuze and the Diagram charts Deleuze's corpus according to aesthetic concepts such as the map, the sketch and the drawing to bring out a comprehensive concept of the diagram. In his interrogation of Deleuze's visual aesthetic theory, Jakub Zdebik focuses on artists that hold an important place in Deleuze's system. The art of Paul Klee and Francis Bacon is presented as the visual manifestation of Deleuze's philosophy and yields novel ways of assessing visual culture. Zdebik goes on to compare Deleuze's philosophy with the visual theories of Foucault, Lyotard and Simondon, as well as the aesthetic philosophy of Heidegger and Kant. He shows how the visual and aesthetic elements of the diagram shed new light on Deleuze's writings. Deleuze conceptualized his theory as a form of painting, saying that, like art, it needed to shift from figuration to abstraction. This book focuses on the visual devices in Deleuze's work and uses the concept of the diagram to describe the relationship between philosophy and art and to formulate a way to think about philosophy through art.

Описание:
The poet Jean de La Fontaine famously dedicated his Fables in 1668 to Louis XIV's son, declaring in verse that "animals I choose/to proffer lessons that we all might use." Less well known is that La Fontaine's Fables appeared within a peak moment of cultural production about animals, the work of a small, but privileged coterie of writers, artists, philosophers, physicians, and scientists. In this highly original study, historian Peter Sahlins argues that 1668 witnessed the shift of an entire way of thinking about the relationship of animals and humans -- what Sahlins calls "Renaissance humanimalism" -- toward early modern expressions of classical naturalism and mechanism. At the same time, Louis XIV used the animals of his newly constructed Versailles menagerie and of the Royal Labyrinth to transform the symbolic language of French absolutism. In the aftermath of 1668, Louis XIV adopted a new model of sovereignty in which absolute authority is justified by animal collections and the bestial nature of his human subjects.
1668: The Year of the Animal in France is a unique interdisciplinary study with rich visual documentation and interpretation of the symbolic lives and afterlives of the animal kingdom at Versailles and Paris. Sahlins observes these animals in their native habitats, in the animal palace designed by Louis Le Vau, the paintings and tapestries of Charles Le Brun, the garden installations of Andre Le Notre, the writings of Charles Perrault and his brother Claude, the poetry of Madeleine de Scudery, the philosophy of Rene Descartes, the engravings of Sebastien Leclerc, and the transfusion experiments of Jean Denis and others. Sahlins transforms the fields of human-animal studies and early modern French history, bringing together the nonhuman and human agents of 1668 -- porcupines and painters, swans and scientists, egrets and engravers, cranes and craftsmen -- in the making of absolutism and mechanism.

Описание: Deleuze’s fondness for geography has long been recognized as central to his thought. This is the first book to introduce researchers to the breadth of his engagements with space, place and movement. Focusing on pressing global issues such as urbanization, war, migration, and climate change, Arun Saldanha presents a detailed Deleuzian rejoinder to a number of theoretical and political questions about globalization in a variety of disciplines. This systematic overview of moments in Deleuze’s corpus where space is implicitly or explicitly theorized shows why he can be called the 20th century’s most imaginative thinker of space. Space After Deleuze is the first book to make clear to a student audience how Deleuze and thinkers close to him (Guattari, Foucault, Marx, Darwin) allow for a robust and politically engaged framework for studying spatial phenomena such as cities, nation-states, climate change, migration and map art. Anyone with an interest in refining a wide range of concepts, from territory, assemblage, to body, event, and the Anthropocene will learn much from the “geophilosophy” which Deleuze and Guattari proposed for our critical times.
