Описание:

Eddie Fung has the distinction of being the only Chinese American soldier to be captured by the Japanese during World War II. He was then put to work on the Burma-Siam railroad, made famous by the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. In this moving and unforgettable memoir, Eddie recalls how he, a second-generation Chinese American born and raised in San Franciscos Chinatown, reinvented himself as a Texas cowboy before going overseas with the U.S. Army. On the way to the Philippines, his battalion was captured by the Japanese in Java and sent to Burma to undertake the impossible task of building a railroad through 262 miles of tropical jungle.

Working under brutal slave labor conditions, the men completed the railroad in fourteen months, at the cost of 12,500 POW and 70,000 Asian lives. Eddie lived to tell how his background helped him endure forty-two months of humiliation and cruelty and how his experiences as the sole Chinese American member of the most decorated Texan unit of any war shaped his later life.

Bribery and Corruption: Biblical Reflections and Case Studies from the Marketplace in Asia

Описание:

The external pressures faced by Christians in the marketplace in Asia are the same as those faced by Christians worldwide. Few of us have sufficient inner spiritual strength and pastoral support to deal with the relentless power of sin as manifested in the corporate world. Increasingly, too, in a globalised economy, there is a need for Christians in the West to understand the ramifications of working in Asia.

This short book is one attempt to respond to the need to help Christians in Asia find a biblical response to the real pressures they face in the marketplace. It takes seriously both the Scriptures and the context in which Asian Christians function. In order to provide a holistic look at the issues involved, Bribery and Corruption begins with a theological framework for grappling with real-time problems, continues with responses from various theologians on the framework presented, and concludes with actual case studies from the marketplace.

Описание: Using a wide variety of sources previously unavailable, Hong Yung Lee offers for the first time a theoretical and historical perspective on China's ruling elite, examining their politics and the bureaucratic system in which they participate. He traces the evolution of these cadres from the guerrilla fighters who first joined the communist movement and founded the new regime in 1949 to the technocratic specialists who wield power today. In the revolution the Communist leaders built a peasant-based party organization whose members were largely recruited from uneducated poor peasants and hired laborers. Even after they became the founders of a new regime, their rural orientation and revolutionary experiences continued to affect the political process. Lee shows that the requirements of modernization have compelled the state to replace the revolutionary cadres with bureaucratic technocrats. Selected from the postliberation generation, the new leaders are more committed to problem-solving than to socialism. Despite uncertainties in the immediate future, this elite transformation signifies an end to modern China's revolutionary era. Lee argues that it seems only a matter of time before China will have a bureaucratic-authoritarian regime led by technocrats possessing a managerial perspective and a pragmatic economic orientation. Описание: "While education might be the door to success, exam is the key to that door." The Exam Passport is perhaps one of the most important books written in the twenty-first century in academic history. Globally, the Exam Passport is a study guide written like never before. Beginning with a revelation of what exam is and its impact, the Exam Passport cleverly sets out the significant importance of exam taking in our current educational system around the world. The Exam Passport is a study guide that is laid out in a way that makes study and revision more urgent, more entertaining, more easy to follow, more thoroughly engaging, and a little more philosophical and novel-like. It is embedded with a real-life scenario and outlines common errors during an exam that all students can associate with. For example, it reveals scenarios that underpin an explainable cause of bad grades and proposes better study techniques that are detailed and concise to overcome bad grades. Among other things, it also explains the relevance of gathering only relevant information for revision, taking effective note. It touches on the role of our memory before and during the exam day. It also reveals that despite being intelligent, motivated, and hardworking, most students still struggle to remember much after hours of studying for an exam. One plausible answer is, the information we might want to retain has not made it into the long-term memory bank. It also consists of topics such as the following: -Accountability -Learning style -Memory -Significance of forgetting -Preparation and planning -Achieving top grade -And many other topics This study guide will help each student handle difficult exam situations and prevent academic failure.

Описание: Breaking through the long-established image of Heian Japan (794-1185) as a culture dominated by ritualized aristocratic values, Yung-Hee Kim presents a picture of a country in transition, filled with a wide variety of common people responding to very ordinary situations. The court does not disappear, but rather becomes part of a larger society inhabited by Buddhist nuns and mountain ascetics, farmers and fishermen, beggars and gamblers. In popular songs called imayo, they express their concerns about religion, love, aging, and even current affairs. In 1179 Emperor Go-Shirakawa compiled a collection of this song genre, which had flourished for two centuries. His twenty-volume anthology, Ryojin hisho, circulated until the middle of the fourteenth century, when it disappeared completely. To the astonishment of the scholarly world, two volumes reappeared early in the twentieth century. It is these texts--a small remnant of a powerful popular literature--that Kim makes accessible to English-speaking readers. Ryojin hisho juxtaposes the sacred with the profane, the high with the low, the male with the female, the old with the new. The songs, in translations that faithfully reflect the sounds and images of the originals, make up the core of this book. They are surrounded by a wealth of material on the imayo genre, the women who sang the songs, the role of court patronage, and other aspects of Heian culture. Far from simply surviving as an aesthetic artifact, the anthology comes to life in its own literary and cultural context. Описание: The several timelines and short discussions in each page in this book make it easy for one to glance over and detect the cause-and-effects between successive events in recent China, that is: in the turbulent years from Opium War to Deng Xiao-Ping. An observation is: China has been deteriorating by itself for 40 years before the Opium war with Britain in 1839; then it took another 137 years including two internal revolutions, several more wars against external aggressors (especially the newly industrialized Japan), plus a devastating cultural revolution - before China could regain its footing and rejoined the world as equals. The politics in foreign countries relating to events in China are pointed out.
