Описание: First published in 1991, Romantic Ecology reassesses the poetry of William Wordsworth in the context of the abiding pastoral tradition in English Literature. Jonathan Bate explores the politics of poetry and argues that contrary to critics who suggest that the Wordsworth was a reactionary who failed to represent the harsh economic reality of his native Lake District, the poet’s politics were fundamentally ‘green’. As our first truly ecological poet, Wordsworth articulated a powerful and enduring vision of human integration with nature which exercised a formative influence on later conservation movements and is of immediate relevance to great environmental issues today. Challenging the orthodoxies of new historicist criticism, Jonathan Bate sets a new agenda for the study of Romanticism in the 1990s.

Описание:

First published in 1979, this is a very welcome reissue of Kathleen Raine's seminal study of William Blake - England's only prophet. He challenged with extraordinary vigour the premises which now underline much of Western civilization, hitting hard at the ideas of a naive materialist philosophy which, even in his own day, was already eating at the roots of English national life. In his insistence that 'mental things are alone real', Blake was ahead of his time. Materialist views are now challenged from various quarters; the depth psychologies of Freud and Jung, the study of Far Easter religion and philosophy, the reappraisal of myth and folk lore, the wealth of psychical research have all prepared the way for an understanding of Blake's thought. We are ready to acknowledge that in attacking 'the sickness of Albion' Blake penetrated to the inner worlds of man and explored them in a way that is quite unique.

Dr Raine, who has made a long study of Blake's sources, presents him as a lonely powerful genius who stands within the spiritual tradition of Sophia Perennis, 'the Everlasting Gospel'. From the standpoint of this great human Norm, our immediate past described by W.B. Yeats as 'the three provincial centuries', is a tragic deviation; catastrophic, as Blake believed, in its spiritual and material consequences. Only now do we possess the necessary knowledge to understand William Blake and the ever-growing number of people who turn to him surely justifies his faith in the eternal truths he strove to communicate.

Описание:

The environmental challenges facing humanity in the twenty-first century are not only acute and grave, they are also unprecedented in kind, complexity and scope. Nonetheless, or therefore, the political response to problems such as climate change, biodiversity loss and widespread pollution continues to fall short. To address these challenges it seems clear that we need new ways of thinking about the relationship between humans and nature, local and global, and past, present and future. One place to look for such new ideas is in poetry, designed to contain multiple levels of meaning at once, challenge the imagination, and evoke responses that are based on something more than scientific consensus and rationale.

This ecocritical book traces the environmental sensibilities of two Anglophone poets; Nobel Prize-winner Seamus Heaney (1939-2013), and British Poet Laureate Ted Hughes (1930-1998). Drawing on recent and multifarious developments in ecocritical theory, it examines how Hughes's and Heaney's respective poetics interact with late twentieth century developments in environmental thought, focusing in particular on ideas about ecology and environment in relation to religion, time, technology, colonialism, semiotics, and globalisation.

This book is aimed at students of literature and environment, the relationship between poetry and environmental humanities, and the poetry of Ted Hughes or Seamus Heaney

Описание:

In both metaphorical and brutely chemical senses, the atmosphere we breathe today is the atmosphere of the British Empire. Fired by coal and bent on remaking the world in its own image, Victorian England was history's first industrial society and its most powerful global empire. Ecological Form coordinates those facts to show how one version of the Anthropocene first emerged into visibility in the nineteenth century.

These eleven new essays by leading voices in nineteenth century ecocriticism suture the lingering divide between postcolonial and ecocritical approaches to show how Victorian thinkers used aesthetic
form to engage problems of system, interconnection, and dispossession that remain our own. Using what the editors describe as "ecological formalism," these sharply-written interventions open new dimensions to our understanding of the Age of Coal. They reconsider Victorian literary structures in light of environmental catastrophe; coordinate "natural" questions with sociopolitical ones; and underscore the category of form--as built structure, internal organizing logic, and generic code--as a means for generating environmental and therefore political knowledge.

Moving from the elegy and the industrial novel to the utopian romance, the scientific treatise, and beyond, the contributors renovate our understanding of the era's major forms and key writers, including Thomas Hardy, George Eliot, John Ruskin, and Joseph Conrad. But they also show how less celebrated figures such as Dinabandhu Mitra, Samuel Butler, and Joseph Dalton Hooker speak to the never more pressing question of how to imagine interconnection at world scale. Ecological
Form shows how nineteenth century thinkers conceived of the circuits of extraction and violence linking Britain to its global network. But its most pressing argument is that this past thought can be a resource for reimagining the present.

Описание:

First published in 1960, this work describes the lives and labours of six great scholars - Simon Ockley, Sir William Jones, E. W. Lane, E. H. Palmer, E.G. Browne and R. A Nicholson. These men were devoted to building a bridge between the peoples and cultures of Europe and Asia. To these biographical essays, Arberry has added a short autobiography and an eloquent plea for the further encouragement of Oriental studies.

This book will be of interest to those studying Middle-Eastern studies and the history of Orientalist study.

Описание: First published in 1985, The Subject of Tragedy takes the drama of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as the starting point for an analysis of the differential identities of man and woman. Catherine Belsey charts, in a range of fictional and non-fictional texts, the production in the Renaissance of a meaning for subjectivity that is identifiably modern. The subject of liberal humanism – self-determining, free origin of language, choice and action – is highlighted as the product of a specific period in which man was the subject to which woman was related.

Описание:

International in her appeal, Nadine Gordimer is an original and accomplished novelist whose works have found literary and popular recognition. In this critical study, first published in 1988 and the first by a woman, Judie Newman discusses Gordimer's novels, including A Sport of Nature. Gordimer's writing is both political committed and formally innovative, confronting subject matter of great contemporary interest and at the same time seeking out narrative forms that combine European and indigenous culture. Her novels are sensitive to their context, while also offering an important contribution to postmodernist reassessments of narrative poetics, and a challenge to European conceptions of the novel. Judie Newman places particular emphasis on Gordimer's searching investigation of the relation of gender to genre, and explores other major concerns such as the crisis of liberal values, the nature of historical consciousness, racism, sexual politics, and the psychopathology of power. Her study combines close literary analysis with a wide-ranging exploration of ideas, showing clearly how the artist can contribute to contemporary debate.
