Von diesem Werk existieren ca. 500 Bruchst cke, die teils in Handschriften, teils auf Papyri berliefert sind. Wie alle Geschichtswerke dieser Untergattung, deren erster bedeutender r mischer Repr sentant Sallust ist, behandeln die Historien Zeitgeschichte. Im erhaltenen Teil werden die Ereignisse des Zeitraums von 78-67 v. Chr. beschrieben, eine Abfolge innenpolitischer Krisen, die letztlich zum Untergang der Republik und zur Etablierung des Prinzipats unter Augustus f hrten: Dazu geh ren die Aufst nde des Konsuls Lepidus in Italien und des Sertorius in Spanien sowie der noch ber hmtere Sklavenaufstand unter der F hrung des Spartacus. Sallust beschreibt diese Krisen und analysiert ihre Ursachen, welche er (in der f r ihn typischen tief pessimistischen Sichtweise) im pers nlichen und moralischen Bereich zu finden meint.
