Описание: Offers an evolving development of fallible, liberal democratic, self-governing educational philosophies. Ronald Swartz identifies four educational programs as personal responsibility schools, then suggests that these learning environments create social institutions that are liberal, democratic, and self-governing and therefore endorse the policy of personal responsibility.

Описание: Online learning has been touted as one way of reducing the cost of higher education while simultaneously addressing the increasing demand for educational opportunity and providing access to hitherto “left out” populations. Many universities are defying tradition by offering completely online degrees for global participants. As such, research is needed to improve the design of online and virtual learning environments to ensure that they are inclusive and culturally adaptive for the global education marketplace. The Handbook of Research on Cross-Cultural Online Learning in Higher Education shares paradigms, perspectives, insights, challenges, and best practices for the instructional design and delivery of cross-cultural adult web-based learning experiences and examines adult learner characteristics and competencies critical for the design of these applications. The content within this publication covers trending topics including virtual learning, culturally adaptive environments, and online education and is intended for instructional designers, faculty, administrators, students, and researchers.

Описание:
The college experience is increasingly positioned to demonstrate its value as a worthwhile return on investment. Specific, definable activities, such as research experience, first-year experience, and experiential learning, are marketed as delivering precise skill sets in the form of an individual educational package.
Through ethnography-based analysis, the contributors to this volume explore how these commodified "experiences" have turned students into consumers and given them the illusion that they are in control of their investment. They further reveal how the pressure to plan every move with a constant eye on a demonstrable return has supplanted traditional approaches to classroom education and profoundly altered the student experience.

Описание: Together we can build enough momentum to see Jim Crow lying silent and still in his grave. This book shouts out ways that we can and must respond to the sickening accumulation of racially inspired and systemically sanctioned deaths. Today, we remember the passing of young, Black Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. In responding to this event, we are determined to dismantle the alexithymia (indifference to the suffering of others) that pervades our campuses. It is nothing less than a by-product of racism protected by the illusion of democracy. RIP Jim Crow contains three sections: (1) Antiracist Theory and Policy; (2) Antiracist Administration, Curriculum, and Pedagogy; and (3) Antiracist Cultural Interventions. Each of the 31 chapters contributes to the normalization of anti-racist policy within academic institutions, antiracist discourse within academic cultures, and institutional praxis that upholds speaking out against racist activity. The hope is that this book will also reduce racism in the broader world through academic relationships with community partners.

Описание: The memoirs in this collection represent a cross-section of critical reflections by a queerly diverse set of individuals on their experiences inhabiting a variety of spaces within the field of education. In their stories, the authors share how they queered and are continuing to queer the academy in relation to questions of teaching, research, policy, and/or administration. Their memoirs speak across generations of queer educators and scholars; collectively their work highlights an array of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. As snapshots in time, the memoirs can be taken up as archive and studied in order to gain perspective on the issues facing queers in the academy across various intersections of identities related to ethnicity, culture, language, (a)gender, (a)sexuality, (dis)ability, socio-economic status, religion, age, veteran status, health status, and more. By way of the memoirs in this volume, a richer body of queer knowledge is offered that can be pulled from and infused into the academic and personal contexts of the work of educators queering academia.
Horror often gets a bad rap, written off as fodder and sensational trash. This text argues that works of the grotesque, most particularly those that fit into the horror genre (including film, written works, radio plays, music, and more), are rich with content that has been largely ignored by curriculum theorists, and that this marginalization makes the genre rife for exploring the anxieties that drive people to invent these tales, leaving them fertile ground for curriculum exploration. Author James V. Grant takes a bricolage approach to understanding constructed monstrosity within cultural phenomena, using it as groundwork for autobiographical and cultural research. Through this bricolage—particularly as a means for exploring the third spaces that the monstrous inhabit and what this habitation reveals—the author problematizes not only a range of identity politics, but also the primacy of human access in educational thought, questioning the efficacy of viewing students, teachers, and schools as objectively knowable data factories. The blending of frameworks creates a Victor Frankenstein approach to uncovering what popular creations of monstrosity reveal about the anxieties of the current age, and what understanding them opens up for curriculum studies. The text’s arts-based inquiry into exploring monstrosity, beginning each chapter with a nightmare screenplay (based on the author’s own nightmares) relevant to the subject matter at hand and ending with theoretical introspection that situates the author within the subject matter, also provides a set of examples of horror theorizing in action.
