In Motherless Tongues, Vicente L. Rafael examines the vexed relationship between language and history gleaned from the workings of translation in the Philippines, the United States, and beyond. Moving across a range of colonial and postcolonial settings, he demonstrates translation's agency in the making and understanding of events. These include nationalist efforts to vernacularize politics, U.S. projects to weaponize languages in wartime, and autobiographical attempts by area studies scholars to translate the otherness of their lives amid the Cold War. In all cases, translation is at war with itself, generating divergent effects. It deploys as well as distorts American English in counterinsurgency and colonial education, for example, just as it re-articulates European notions of sovereignty among Filipino revolutionaries in the nineteenth century and spurs the circulation of text messages in a civilian-driven coup in the twenty-first. Along the way, Rafael delineates the untranslatable that inheres in every act of translation, asking about the politics and ethics of uneven linguistic and semiotic exchanges. Mapping those moments where translation and historical imagination give rise to one another, Motherless Tongues shows how translation, in unleashing the insurgency of language, simultaneously sustains and subverts regimes of knowledge and relations of power.

Описание: Vicente Podico Lim (1888-1944) was once his country's best-known soldier. The first Filipino to graduate from West Point and a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Lim figured in every significant military development in the Philippines during his thirty years in uniform. Frustrated Ambition is the first in-depth biography of this forgotten figure, whose career paralleled the early-twentieth-century history of the Philippine military. As independence seemed increasingly likely for the Philippines in the 1930s, Lim positioned himself to take a leading role in developing armed forces for a sovereign nation. But as Lim maneuvered behind the scenes, Manuel L. Quezon, soon to be the commonwealth president, revealed that he had invited General Douglas MacArthur to serve as military adviser to the Philippines. Frustrated Ambition corrects the conventional historical narrative of events thereafter - one that emphasizes the failure of the nascent Philippine military under MacArthur and inflates the general's heroic role in the defense of Bataan and Corregidor. Richard Bruce Meixsel restores Lim as the then-recognized leader of the opposition to MacArthur's mission, and shows how Lim took the Philippine Army in a more tenable direction as MacArthur's military system foundered. World War II brought Lim to the fore. While MacArthur directed his troops from Corregidor, Lim commanded a division on Bataan that may have suffered more combat losses at the battle of Abucay than did all American units on Bataan during the entire campaign. When the U.S. high command turned its efforts to evacuating the Philippine Islands, Lim began to prepare for the ensuing underground struggle against the Japanese - a fight that cost him his life. By recounting Vicente Lim's career, Frustrated Ambition illuminates forgotten episodes in Philippine history, offers new perspectives on military affairs during the American occupation, and recovers the story of Filipino soldiers whose service changed the course of their country's military history.

Описание: The life of Felicia, a gorgeous woman in her forties and English teacher, is a wasteland of upsetting experiences, but the Chance goes in her aid by taking her to the encounter of some unexpected characters of the legal outskirts, designers of a small but lucrative hard-core production company: Raven Dreams, ltd. -more a Fraternity than a clandestine firm-. She will meet this way Virginia and Ms. Robinson. The first one, a beautiful girl in her late teens with a double life: both an apathetic schoolgirl in the morning and a promising porn star at night; the latter, a superb matron of undefined age, very sagacious and gifted with a supernatural smell, which is guided in life by a goblin who whispers to her in her ear. And Mr. Cuervo, foreigner investor in Cuba-in the iceberg's visible part-but the guru of the Sect in the submerged one, its Great Architect: a multinational man in his fifties, cosmopolitan and philosopher, who aspire to elevate the hard-porn up the Major Art status. A story of prominent roles shared with other no less singular characters. Namely: a sculptural, Dionysian clerk lady of the Spanish consulate in Havana / a young assistant manager, social climber and fornicator, a rehearsal of Cuban yuppie / a noble housewife, as decent as full of erotophilia / an ex comrade-revolutionary whose only motivation today is his old automobile / a lucid psychiatric dissident woman / an outlandish gay, friend and teacher of handicapped boys and girls / a Down syndrome boy capable of winning a difficult game of chess for achieving the favor of the girl he loves . . . A novel in satirical key, in which Humor, Sex and Absurdity make a m nage trois in that Havana of the New Millennium, that of the Lengthy Especial Period. Without the pretension of becoming a Milesian tale, but taking in loan the tools of this latter, BUNS IN THE OVEN delivers itself to the risqu expression and the Picaresque, in its eagerness of being, via Burlesque Realism, a sort of shock to the system, an expressive knock for a country and its current times so needy of social transparency.

Описание: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are described in the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, called the Book of John of Jesus Christ to John of Patmos, at 6:1-8. The chapter tells of a book or scroll in God's right hand that is sealed with seven seals. The Lamb of God opens the first four of the seven seals, which summons four beings that ride out on white, red, black, and pale horses. Though theologians and popular culture differ on the first horseman, the four riders are often seen as symbolizing Conquest or Pestilence (and less frequently, the Christ or the Antichrist), War, Famine, and Death citation needed]. The Christian apocalyptic vision is that the four horsemen are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgment. One reading ties the four horsemen to the history of the Roman Empire subsequent to the era in which the Book of Revelation was written. That is, they are a symbolic prophecy of the subsequent history of the empire Extract THE TRYST (In the Garden of the Chapelle Expiatoire) They were to have met in the garden of the Chapelle Expiatoire at five o'clock in the afternoon, but Julio Desnoyers with the impatience of a lover who hopes to advance the moment of meeting by presenting himself before the appointed time, arrived an half hour earlier. The change of the seasons was at this time greatly confused in his mind, and evidently demanded some readjustment. Five months had passed since their last interview in this square had afforded the wandering lovers the refuge of a damp, depressing calmness near a boulevard of continual movement close to a great railroad station. The hour of the appointment was always five and Julio was accustomed to see his beloved approaching by the reflection of the recently lit street lamps, her figure enveloped in furs, and holding her muff before her face as if it were a half-mask. Her sweet voice, greeting him, had breathed forth a cloud of vapor, white and tenuous, congealed by the cold. After various hesitating interviews, they had abandoned the garden. Their love had acquired the majestic importance of acknowledged fact, and from five to seven had taken refuge in the fifth floor of the rue de la Pompe where Julio had an artist's studio. The curtains well drawn over the double glass windows, the cosy hearth-fire sending forth its ruddy flame as the only light of the room, the monotonous song of the samovar bubbling near the cups of tea-all the seclusion of life isolated by an idolizing love-had dulled their perceptions to the fact that the afternoons were growing longer, that outside the sun was shining later and later into the pearl-covered depths of the clouds, and that a timid and pallid Spring was beginning to show its green finger tips in the buds of the branches suffering the last nips of Winter-that wild, black boar who so often turned on his tracks. Translated by Charlotte Brewster Jordan (1862 - circa 1932) was an American writer and translator, best known for her authorized translation of Vicente Blasco Iba ez's Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse, which was one of the best-selling novels of the early 20th century
