Описание:

This thesis proposes novel designs of phononic crystal plates (PhPs) allowing ultra-wide controllability frequency ranges of guided waves at low frequencies, with promising structural and tunability characteristics. It reports on topology optimization of bi-material-layered (1D) PhPs allowing maximized relative bandgap width (RBW) at target filling fractions and demonstrates multiscale functionality of gradient PhPs. It also introduces a multi-objective topology optimization method for 2D porous PhPs allowing both maximized RBW and in-plane stiffness and addresses the critical role of considering stiffness in designing porous PhPs. The multi-objective topology optimization method is then expanded for designing 2D porous PhPs with deformation induced tunability. A variety of innovative designs are introduced which their maximized broadband RBW is enhanced by, is degraded by or is insensitive to external finite deformation. Not only does this book address the challenges of new topology optimization methods for computational design of phononic crystals; yet, it demonstrated the suitability and applicability of the topological designs by experimental validation. Furthermore, it offers a comprehensive review of the existing optimization-based approaches for the design of finite non-periodic acoustic metamaterial structures, acoustic metamaterial lattice structures and acoustic metamaterials under perfect periodicity.

Описание: In this Brief, authors introduce the advance in theoretical and experimental techniques for determining the thermal conductivity in nanomaterials, and focus on review of their recent theoretical studies on the thermal properties of silicon–based nanomaterials, such as zero–dimensional silicon nanoclusters, one–dimensional silicon nanowires, and graphenelike two–dimensional silicene. The specific subject matters covered include: size effect of thermal stability and phonon thermal transport in spherical silicon nanoclusters, surface effects of phonon thermal transport in silicon nanowires, and defects effects of phonon thermal transport in silicene. The results obtained are supplemented by numerical calculations, presented as tables and figures. The potential applications of these findings in nanoelectrics and thermoelectric energy conversion are also discussed. In this regard, this Brief represents an authoritative, systematic, and detailed description of the current status of phonon thermal transport in silicon–based nanomaterials. This Brief should be a highly valuable reference for young scientists and postgraduate students active in the fields of nanoscale thermal transport and silicon-based nanomaterials.

Описание: This volume contains of the proceedings of the CECAM {Centre d'Etudes de Calcul Atomique et Moleculaire} workshop on "Ab Initio Calculation of Phonon Spectra" which took place at the campus of the University of Antwerpen (Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen) on June 4 and 5, 1981. This workshop was sponsored by the Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen, by the Belgian "Nationaal Fonds voor Weten- schappelijk Onderzoek" and the Belgian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. Although the calculation of phonon spectra in a solid has long been known to solid state physicists, it is only in the last decade that a macroscopic theory which treats the response of the electrons to the vibrations of the ions has been developed in a successful way. In the case of semiconductors numerical calculations of phonon frequencies were not performed until very recently due to the complex- ity of the problem. The correct treatment of the electron in the crystal has also led to an investigation of electron-phonon inter- action, including many body effects. Success has been achieved in the calculation of phonon anomalies and the coupling parameters in transition metals. In the case of surfaces the conductions for the appearance of electronic instabilities and the coupling of the resulting charge density wave to the lattice have been studied.

Описание: The thesis presents experimental and theoretical results about the surface dynamics and the surface Dirac fermion (DF) spectral function of the strong topological insulators Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3. The experimental results reveal the presence of a strong Kohn anomaly in the measured surface phonon dispersion of a low-lying optical mode, and the absence of surface Rayleigh acoustic phonons. Fitting the experimental data to theoretical models employing phonon Matsubara functions allowed the extraction of the matrix elements of the coupling Hamiltonian and the modifications to the surface phonon propagator that are encoded in the phonon self-energy. This allowed, for the first time, calculation of phonon mode-specific DF coupling ??(q) from experimental data, with average coupling significantly higher than typical values for metals, underscoring the strong coupling between optical surface phonons and surface DFs in topological insulators. Finally, to connect to experimental results obtained from photoemission spectroscopies, an electronic (DF) Matsubara function was constructed using the determined electron-phonon matrix elements and the optical phonon dispersion. This allowed calculation of the DF spectral function and density of states, allowing for comparison with photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The results set the necessary energy resolution and extraction methodology for calculating ? from the DF perspective.

Описание: Understanding the mechanism of the high-temperature superconductors has been a very important topic in condensed matter physics. Researchers have been trying to explain the role of electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in cuprates. Some important properties of the cuprates could not be explained by conventional BCS theory. This book contains the experimental and theoretical studies on the EPI. The experimental part covers the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), isotopic effect, elastic neutron scattering study of electron-phonon, lattice role and so on. The theoretical part covers the electron-phonon, polaron and bipolaron, effect of lattice, fine structure in the tunnelling spectra of electron-doped cuprates, identification of the bulk pairing symmetry in high-temperature superconductors and effect of lattice.Students and researchers interested in high-temperature superconductors, especially the EPI in cuprates will find this title very useful.

Описание: Lasers are playing a more and more dominant role in modern optical spec- troscopy, offering an increased potential for high resolution and, thus, for more detailed spectroscopic information on dynamic and structural param- eters. This book on Zero-Phonon Lines and Spectral Hole Burning in Spec- troscopy and Photochemistry gives a concise and very useful survey of some of the pioneering and current work on solid state spectroscopy of various groups in the USSR. It focusses on the optical Mossbauer analogue, the "zero-phonon line," and "hole burning" spectroscopy, a method which increases the resolu- tion well beyond the zero-phonon linewidth. In this conte. . 'Ct, the present work is complementary to Persistent Spectral Hole-Burning: Science and Applica- tions (ed. by W. E. Moerner, Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg 1988), which deals in more detail with the various aspects of laser spectroscopy with ultrahigh spectral resolution. Zero-phonon lines and an understanding of the various phonon coupling mechanisms which are treated in this book are a prerequi- site for applying and understanding techniques of ultrahigh resolution such as hole-burning or optical echoes. Bayreuth, March 1988 D. Haarer Preface The investigation of zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) is one of the foremost and most informative fields of present-day condensed-matter spectroscopy. Along with its definite function in physical cognition and investigation methods, the spectroscopy of ZPLs is also gaining purely practical applications. This is due to the fact that ZPLs are extra-sensitive quantum-mechanical detectors.
