This book offers a thorough and comprehensive review of the lessons learnt from the award-winning 'English in Action' English language teacher development programme, which ran in government primary and secondary schools across Bangladesh from 2008 to 2017. Over the course of nine years the programme involved 51,000 teachers and 20 million school students, demonstrably raising standards of teachers' classroom practice and students' English language attainment, and won the British Council ELTON Award for Local innovation (2013) and Times Higher Education Award for International Impact (2107).
The sixteen chapters explore the programme in detail, looking at both the successes and the challenges encountered throughout its course, including the strategies used to address the challenges. The key innovative factors of the programme include: - a positive choice to build on the existing context, such as the lives and experiences of local teachers and the demands of a nationally determined curriculum; - teacher learning taking place in the teachers' own classrooms; - a focus on learning the 'how' of communicative language teaching through reflective practice and peer support; - the use - within a carefully constructed pedagogy - of affordable, readily-available mobile phone technology; - the use of mediated authentic video - a model of teacher development at very large scale that provided a successful alternative to the'cascade'model; - a partnership with government institutions to ensure that improved practices are maintained beyond the life of the Programme.

Bangladeshs own Sheikh Mujibur Rahman did not have time to turn Bangladesh into a prosperous nation, but he was the architect of the Bangladesh nation, which sacrificed three million men and women, and two hundred thousand women lost dignity in a liberation war in 1971. These leaders had one thing in common, they had visions about prosperity and freedom. Singapore and Malaysia realized late Prime Minister Lee and Prime Minister Mahthirs visions in their life time. In other words, Sheikh Mujib wanted to make Bangladesh a Golden Bengal, a member of the OECD nations. Since the dark days of 1975 when he was killed by assassins bullets, the nation has been looking for opportunity to realize Mujibs visions. Finally, the opportunity came to his daughter Sheikh Hasina in 1996 and with a break of next five years at last she got momentum in 2009 for taking Bangladesh to prosperity. The incumbent government since 2009 has been doing extraordinarily well to maintain and fulfill all the requirements of a "middle income" status which was awarded in March 2018. Sheikh Hasina has recently said, "Bangladesh will achieve the goals to become a middle income nation by 2021, three years ahead of the deadline set by the World Bank. She has been working tirelessly for transforming Bangladesh into a "developed" nation by 2041. Indeed, she is a visionary too for realizing the visions of Mujib by making Bangladesh the Switzerland of Asia. Описание: Agricultural development through crop diversification, irrigation, high yielding crop varieties, and public investments in infrastructure has improved food security and its seasonal dimension worldwide in recent years. Consequently, the severity of seasonal hunger caused by agricultural crop cycles has lessened substantially. Yet in agricultural pockets scattered throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, seasonal hunger persists, especially among the rural poor, owing primarily to idiosyncratic shocks caused by agricultural seasonality. More than four-fifths of the world’s poor live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for livelihoods. Because of seasonal income shocks, the poor who are generally poor are likely to be even poorer during a particular agricultural season, while those who are not poor year-round may also be so during that season. Also, seasonal hunger may lead to endemic poverty if its adverse effects on income and consumption are irreversible. Policies aimed at reducing overall poverty often disregard its seasonal dimension, because standard poverty statistics do not consider seasonal hunger in the official data collection and analysis, there is no direct way to determine how many of the “bottom billion,” as economist Paul Collier refers to the world’s poorest people, suffer from seasonal hunger. Even worse, regions prone to severe seasonal hunger are unlikely to attract the public investments required to raise the local economy’s resilience through income diversification and thus break the seasonal-poverty cycle.The book provides an exhaustive inquiry of Bangladesh’s seasonal hunger with special reference to the North West region.
