Описание: Captain Ernie Blanchard left for work January 10, 1995, a successful officer. Respected by superiors and subordinates alike, his personal and professional values seemed perfectly aligned with the institution he served, the United States Coast Guard. By day’s end his career was finished. At a speaking engagement at the Coast Guard Academy, Blanchard’s icebreaker—a series of tasteless jokes—was met with silence. Within hours, an investigation was underway into whether his remarks constituted sexual harassment. Twelve days later, threatened with court-martial, he shot himself. The author investigates Blanchard’s “death by political correctness” in context of the turmoil surrounding U.S. Armed Forces’ gender inclusion struggles from the 1980s to the present. The experiences of Private Jessica Lynch and Lieutenant Colonel Kate Germano underscore how military women who elevate martial virtues over public relations are targeted for intimidation.

Описание: This 1st Edition of Petty Officer's Guide is written and edited by Petty Officers for Petty Officers. It is designed to ensure Navy Petty Officers are ready "to fight and win wars at sea, on land, and in cyberspace" by exposing junior Petty Officers to innovative and modern leadership methodologies. It closes the loop in the United States Naval Institute's Professional Reading series and increases the amount of modern naval literature on the U.S. Navy Petty Officer. It was written to compliment the U.S. Navy Bluejacket's Manual, Chief Petty Officer's Guide, and Division Officer's Guide. Serving as the "premiere leadership guide" to junior Navy Petty Officers, it enhances development processes and tools such as the Navy Leader Development Framework, Education for Sea Power, Sailor 360, and Navy Petty Officer Selectee Leadership courses.
Furthermore, it reinforces modern lines of effort identified in the Chief of Naval Operations' Design for Maritime Superiority and promotes the development of innovative leaders and strategic thinkers. It has also been written to expand the target audience that falls outside the junior Navy Petty Officer corps, primarily, serving as Work Center Supervisors, Assistant Leading Petty Officers, and Leading Petty Officers, but officers, civilian managers, foreign naval officers and enlisted personnel, and sister-service enlisted personnel are also key audience targets. This guide provides unique insights into the values, beliefs, attitudes, and skills which enable the success of naval leaders, how Petty Officers can use power bases, influence tactics, and managerial skills to achieve objectives, and how to influence their peers in support of organizational objectives to achieve the mission accomplishment. Like The Bluejacket's Manual, this guide should be an essential part of an American Sailor's sea bag.

Описание: Offers unique insight into the role of private actors in military conflicts and the reason they are increasingly deployed today. Along with an overview of mercenaries and privateers, Marque and Reprisal provides a comprehensive history of the ""marque and reprisal"" clause in the US Constitution, reminding us that it is not as arcane as it seems.

Описание: With distrust between the political parties running deep and Congress divided, the government of the United States goes to war. The war is waged without adequately preparing the means to finance it or readying suitable contingency plans to contend with its unanticipated complications. The executive branch suffers from managerial confusion and in-fighting. The military invades a foreign country, expecting to be greeted as liberators, but encounters stiff, unwelcome resistance. The conflict drags on longer than predicted. It ends rather inconclusivelyor so it seems in its aftermath.Sound familiar? This all happened two hundred years ago. What So Proudly We Hailed looks at the War of 1812 in part through the lens of today's America. On the bicentennial of that formative yet largely forgotten period in U.S. history, this provocative book asks: What did Americans learnand not learnfrom the experience? What instructive parallels and distinctions can be drawn with more recent events? How did it shape the nation?Exploring issues ranging from party politics to sectional schisms, distant naval battles to the burning of Washington, and citizens' civil liberties to the fate of Native Americans caught in the struggle, these essays speak to the complexity and unpredictability of a war that many assumed would be brief and straightforward. What emerges is a revealing perspective on a problematic ""war of choice""the nation's first, but one with intriguing implications for others, including at least one in the present century.Although the War of 1812 may have faded from modern memory, the conflict left important legacies, both in its immediate wake and in later years. In its own time, the war was transformative. To this day, however, some of the fundamental challenges that confronted U.S. policymakers two centuries ago still resonate. How much should a free society regularly invest in national defense? Should the expense be defrayed through new taxes? Is it possible for profound partisan disagreements to stop ""at the water's edge""? What are the constitutional limits of executive powers in wartime? How, exactly, should the government treat dissenters, especially when many are suspected of giving aid and comfort to an enemy? As Americans continue to reflect on their country and its role in the world, these questions remain as relevant now as they were then.

Описание: What wasn't learned from a U.S. intervention that succeeded. In July 1958, U.S. Marines stormed the beach in Beirut, Lebanon, ready for combat. They were greeted by vendors and sunbathers. Fortunately, the rest of their missionhelping to end Lebanon's first civil warwent nearly as smoothly and successfully, thanks in large part to the skillful work of American diplomats who helped arrange a compromise solution. Future American interventions in the region would not work out quite as well. Bruce Riedel's new book tells the now-forgotten story (forgotten, that is, in the United States) of the first U.S. combat operation in the Middle East. President Eisenhower sent the Marines in the wake of a bloody coup in Iraq, a seismic event that altered politics not only of that country but eventually of the entire region. Eisenhower feared that the coup, along with other conspiracies and events that seemed mysterious back in Washington, threatened American interests in the Middle East. His action, and those of others, were driven in large part by a cast of fascinating characters whose espionage and covert actions could be grist for a movie. Although Eisenhower's intervention in Lebanon was unique, certainly in its relatively benign outcome, it does hold important lessons for today's policymakers as they seek to deal with the always unexpected challenges in the Middle East. Veteran analyst Bruce Reidel describes the scene as it emerged six decades ago, and he suggests that some of the lessons learned then are still valid today. A key lesson? Not to rush to judgment when surprised by the unexpected. And don't assume the worst.
