Описание: This book presents the fundamentals of data assimilation and reviews the application of satellite remote sensing in hydrological data assimilation. Satellite remote sensing data provides a great opportunity to improve the performance of models through data assimilation.
Due to the scale and complexity of data sets currently being collected in areas such as health, transportation, environmental science, engineering, information technology, business and finance, modern quantitative analysts are seeking improved and appropriate computational and statistical methods to explore, model and draw inferences from big data. This book aims to introduce suitable approaches for such endeavours, providing applications and case studies for the purpose of demonstration.
"Computational and Statistical Methods for Analysing Big Data with Applications" starts with an overview of the era of big data. It then goes onto explain the computational and statistical methods which have been commonly applied in the big data revolution. For each of these methods, an example is provided as a guide to its application. Five case studies are presented next, focusing on computer vision with massive training data, spatial data analysis, advanced experimental design methods for big data, big data in clinical medicine, and analysing data collected from mobile devices, respectively. The book concludes with some final thoughts and suggested areas for future research in big data.
Advanced computational and statistical methodologies for analysing big data are developed.
Experimental design methodologies are described and implemented to make the analysis of big data more computationally tractable.
Case studies are discussed to demonstrate the implementation of the developed methods.
Five high-impact areas of application are studied: computer vision, geosciences, commerce, healthcare and transportation.
Computing code/programs are provided where appropriate.

Описание: The fields of photonics and phononics encompass the fundamental science of light and sound propagation and interactions in complex structures, as well as its technological applications. This book reviews new and fundamental mathematical tools, computational approaches, and inversion and optimal design methods to address challenging problems in photonics and phononics. An emphasis is placed on analyzing sub-wavelength resonators, super-focusing and super-resolution of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, photonic and phononic crystals, electromagnetic cloaking, and electromagnetic and elastic metamaterials and metasurfaces. Throughout this book, the authors demonstrate the power of layer potential techniques for solving challenging problems in photonics and phononics when they are combined with asymptotic analysis. This book might be of interest to researchers and graduate students working in the fields of applied and computational mathematics, partial differential equations, electromagnetic theory, elasticity, integral equations, and inverse and optimal design problems in photonics and phononics.

Описание: This volume presents some recent and principal developments related to computational intelligence and optimization methods in control. Theoretical aspects and practical applications of control engineering are covered by 14 self-contained contributions. Additional gems include the discussion of future directions and research perspectives designed to add to the reader’s understanding of both the challenges faced in control engineering and the insights into the developing of new techniques. With the knowledge obtained, readers are encouraged to determine the appropriate control method for specific applications.
Описание: This volume will contain selected papers from the lectures held at the BAIL 2010 Conference, which took place from July 5th to 9th, 2010 in Zaragoza (Spain).
This volume collects papers associated with lectures that were presented at the BAIL 2016 conference, which was held from 14 to 19 August 2016 at Beijing Computational Science Research Center and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. It showcases the variety and quality of current research into numerical and asymptotic methods for theoretical and practical problems whose solutions involve layer phenomena.
The BAIL (Boundary And Interior Layers) conferences, held usually in even-numbered years, bring together mathematicians and engineers/physicists whose research involves layer phenomena, with the aim of promoting interaction between
these often-separate disciplines. These layers appear as solutions of singularly perturbed differential equations of various types, and are common in physical problems, most notably in fluid dynamics.
This book is of interest for current researchers from mathematics, engineering and physics whose work involves the accurate app
roximation of solutions of singularly perturbed differential equations; that is, problems whose solutions exhibit boundary and/or interior layers.

Описание:
This book presents recent mathematical methods in the area of inverse problems in imaging with a particular focus on the computational aspects and applications. The formulation of inverse problems in imaging requires accurate mathematical modeling in order to preserve the significant features of the image. The book describes computational methods to efficiently address these problems based on new optimization algorithms for smooth and nonsmooth convex minimization, on the use of structured (numerical) linear algebra, and on multilevel techniques. It also discusses various current and challenging applications in fields such as astronomy, microscopy, and biomedical imaging. The book is intended for researchers and advanced graduate students interested in inverse problems and imaging.
Описание: As computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied to ever more demanding fluid flow problems, the ability to compute numerical fluid flow solutions to a user specified tolerance as well as the ability to quantify the accuracy of an existing numerical solution are seen as essential ingredients in robust numerical simulation.
