Under the banner of soft power or Cool Japan, cultural commodities that originate in Japan have manifested new meanings outside Japan. By (re)mapping meanings of selected Japanese cultural forms, this volume offers an in-depth examination of how various aspects of Japanese aesthetics have evolved as exportable commodities, the motivations behind this diffusion, and the extent to which the process of diffusion has been the result of strategic planning. Each chapter presents a case study that explores perspectives that situate Japanese aesthetics within a wide-ranging field of inquiry including performance, tourism, and visual arts, as well as providing historical contexts. The importance of interrogating the export of Japanese aesthetics is validated at the highest levels of government, which formed the Office of Cool Japan in 2010, and which perhaps originated in the 19th century at governmentally endorsed cultural courts at world fairs. In the meadow, Wren must fight and kill an "Afflicted" and in reading the journals realizes it was her father she had killed. Kirby, meanwhile, has been banished from the village for helping Wren. He finds the meadow and the 2 of them hide out for the summer while Wren learns to ride her now huge dragon "Cyan". The four of them meet an Elvish emmisary who warns them of an uprising of Afflicted which is decimating the kingdom and a large horde is headed for Wrens village. Wren, Kirby, Tick and Cyan travel to the Elven city of Sylvan Dell where Wren learns that she is the main heroine in the Prophesy. Reluctantly, Wren agrees to muster aid from residents of the secret city of Grimthorn, long thought to be populated with those who have been banished for all manner of crimes. Wren finds the city a bustling positive place and convinces them to join the coming battle. The city of the Elves join the humans in fighting the monsters and will use magic to help win the day. Wren and Kirby leave on a quest to find a Fairy tear to complete the spell the Elves will use. Along the way, they are helped by a talking, very sarcastic wolf named Rab who saves Wrens life from the horrible Fairies. With the magic the Elves bring, and the assistance of the Grimthorn folk, the battle is hard won. Wren learns skills and courage she never thought she could possess, both with magic and with her own inner strength, and becomes a hero to her people.

Drawing on her research on authentic video-recorded social interactions, Korkiakangas shows how a multimodal interaction perspective can shed new light on gaze: what an instance of gaze does, and when, why, and for whom gaze 'matters', from both children on the autism spectrum and their social partners' perspective, including teachers and parents. Grounded in the interactional tradition of conversation analysis, the multimodal interaction perspective offers a major contribution to our understanding of autism by examining communication beyond talk and linguistic resources. Communication, Gaze and Autism considers both mutual gaze and gaze aversion during talk or silence, alongside facial expressions, gestures, and other body movements, to understand what gaze is used for, and to rethink 'eye contact'.
