About the Author
Dr. Anthony J. Catanese was born in 1957 in Brooklyn, New York. He started playing judo in the early 1960s. He is currently a fourth-degree black belt. Dr. Catanese graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School, St. John's University, and New York Medical College. He studied general surgery and urology at NYU/Bellevue for six years. In addition to being trained in general surgery and urology, he has training in trauma surgery, emergency medicine, and sports medicine.
Dr. Catanese is a diplomat of the American Board of Urology, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a fellow of the International College of Surgeons, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. He practices urology and genitourinary oncology at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, New Jersey. He also serves as the chairman of the Surgery Department.
Dr. Catanese started playing judo under Sensei Hank Kraft at Queens Judo Center in Forest Hills, New York. He competed as a junior, high school, college, senior and master's competitor. He has played locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has owned and operated his own judo school. His experience makes him uniquely qualified to write a book on this subject.
Dr. Catanese trains at Cranford Judo and Karate under Sensei Yoshisida Yonezuka. He volunteers his time as the tournament physician in the New York area.

Since this book first appeared in 1964 British Judo has gone from strength to strength and there have since been many books written on these techniques but it is firmly believed that this book, written by two such great names in Judo, still has much to offer students in the modern Judo world.
Trevor Pryce Leggett lived for a number of years in Japan where he learnt the Japanese language and studied Judo and Zen. He was the first foreigner to hold the sixth dan in Judo from the Kodokan in Japan. And he was 9th Dan from the BJA. A Senior Instructor at the Budokwai and founder of the Renshuden in London he was one of the leading teachers of Judo in the United Kingdom. He was the author of Kata Judo (with Dr Jigoro Kano) which was the authorised text of the British Judo Association. He was head of the Japanese Service of the BBC from 1946 to 1970 and was the author of books on Yoga and Zen including 'Zen and the Ways, 'Samurai Zen', 'The Spirit of Budo, and
'The Complete Commentary by Sankara on the Yoga Sutras'. He died on 2nd August 2000 at the age of 85.
Kisaburo Watanabe was 7th Dan from the Kodokan. He was famous as a Judo stylist and for his attacking Judo. He captained his University team and the Japanese National team that defeated the USA in 1957. He was a gold medallist at the Asian Games in 1958 and a bronze medallist at the All Japan Championship in 1959. From 1962 to 1967 he was based in London where he was a senior instructor at the Budokwai and Renshuden and for three years was a National Judo Coach. In 1967 he returned to Japan to join the Nippon Budokan until his retirement in 2001. His last visit to London was in February 2018 to attend the Centenary of the Budokwai. He died on 25th September 2019 at the age of 83.

In 1882, Kano opened his Kodokan dojo in Tokyo, where he taught jujutsu to his first class of nine students. His choice of the name 'Kodokan' symbolizes precocity in one so young and is highly significant, for it means 'the institute where one is guided along the road to follow in life', that is to say, a road that one travels as a means of self-cultivation, which Kano regarded as the optimum way to live one's life. This cultivation, however, can only be attained following long years of training made with vigorous exertion in an effort to reach the ultimate goal: self-perfection.
At the age of twenty-four, Kano abruptly gave up the teaching of this ancient and altogether brutal activity and never taught jujutsu again. In his attempt to create for the modern age a non-violent, spiritually inspiring antagonistic art, he carried out research on several styles of jujutsu. Primarily in the interests of both safety and practicality, he altered and added his own devices to the techniques that he was later to incorporate into his newly conceived system of skills, which he named 'Kodokan judo'. In lectures, Kano often stated the following: 'The ultimate object of studying judo is to train and cultivate body and mind through practice in attack and defense, and by thus mastering the essentials of the art, to attain perfection of oneself and bring benefits to the world.' He had sought to create in judo, therefore, something positive out of something largely negative.
