Описание: When we ask whether something exists, we expect a yes or no answer, not a further query about what kind of existence, how much of it, whether we mean existence for you or existence for me, or whether we are asking about some property which it might have.
With her first book, Our Mothers, Our Powers, Our d104s: Manifestations Aje in Africana Literature, Teresa N. Washington reveals the Pan-African power and profundity of Aje and its myriad sister systems in Pan-African literature and culture. In The Architects of Existence: Aje in Yoruba Cosmology, Ontology, and Orature, Washington undertakes an in-depth exploration of Aje's Yoruba Gods, origins, and manifestations to reveal the force's vast depth, complexity, and scope. By analyzing diverse sources, including published studies, historical texts, divination verses, and interviews with Yoruba wisdom keepers, Washington elucidates the multifaceted and complex nature of Aje and reveals the power to be extraordinarily profound, influential, and logical. Washington's meticulous exposition of Aje includes chapters on the multifold power of Odu, the Great Mother; Aje's signs, symbols, and orders of operation; manifestations of Aje in the Odu Ifa; the roles of Aje in Yoruba secret societies and sacred institutions; and the impact of Aje on some of the Yoruba world's most influential sons, including Olatubosun Oladapo, Wole Soyinka, Toyin Falola, and Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The Architects of Existence is a groundbreaking study that will be essential reading for scholars of Yoruba Studies, Philosophy, African Studies, Gender Studies, Religious Studies, and Comparative Religions. Scholars, initiates, and practitioners of Yoruba spiritual arts and sciences will find this book to be indispensable.

Swedish filmmaker Roy Anderssons celebrated and enigmatic film Songs from the Second Floor, his first feature film in twenty-five years, won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. The songs of the films title refer to Anderssons artistic ruminations on the state of mankind from his office on the second floor of Studio 24 in Stockholm. The film presents a series of forty-six tableauxlong, deep-focus shots with a still camera, mostly in studio settings, using older visual tricks such as trompe loeil. The tableaux showcase seemingly trivial tragicomic situations designed to provoke thoughts about existential guilt, broken relationships, and the failure of social institutions to treat people as human beings.
Lindqvist draws from interviews with Andersson and his team that provide a behind-the-scenes look at how the film was made and investigates its philosophical and artistic influences, providing a nuanced reading of a film that has both befuddled and entranced its viewers. This first book-length study in English of Anderssons work considers his aesthetic agenda and the unique methods that have become hallmarks of his filmmaking, as well as his firm belief in films revolutionary function as social critique.
Описание: An Altered Existence is a collection of short stories, each illustrated with a vintage photo. These photos, also known as cabinet cards, were "orphans" collected from flea markets and antique stores. They sparked the author's imagination, and resulted in 14 short stories illustrated with photos "altered" by the author. - A photo of a bearded man with haunted eyes is paired with a silver key, and a story of a family with hoarding tendencies emerges. - A wedding portrait of a young couple, combined with a gold wedding band and the words "false" and "true", yields a tale about a gentle schoolteacher who sets her small town's rumor mill on fire when she poses for a photo with a local scoundrel, though they're not engaged or married. - A young girl's portrait, when paired with vintage buttons, births a story that many can relate to: loss, and the subsequent struggle to feel whole again. Look into these 14 portraits from long ago, and venture into the "altered existences" they inspired. This collection includes stories about life, love, birth, death, self-acceptance, salvation, and taking chances. Their stories just may be our stories, too...

Описание: The idea of the pre-existence of the soul has been extremely important, widespread, and persistent throughout Western history--from even before the philosophy of Plato to the poetry of Robert Frost. When Souls Had Wings offers the first systematic history of this little explored feature of Western culture. Terryl Givens describes the tradition of pre-existence as "pre-heaven"--the place where unborn souls wait until they descend to earth to be born. And typically it is seen as a descent--a falling away from a happier and untroubled state into the turbulent and sinful world we know. The title of the book refers to the idea put forward in antiquity that our souls begin with wings, and that only after shedding those wings do we fall to earth. The book not only traces the history of the idea of pre-existence, but also captures its meaning for those who have embraced it. Givens describes how pre-existence has been invoked to explain "the better angels of our nature," including the human yearning for transcendence and the sublime. Pre-existence has been said to account for why we know what we should not know, whether in the form of a Greek slave's grasp of mathematics, the moral sense common to humanity, or the human ability to recognize universals. The belief has explained human bonds that seem to have their own mysterious prehistory, salved the wounded sensibility of a host of thinkers who could not otherwise account for the unevenly distributed pain and suffering that are humanity's common lot, and has been posited by philosophers and theologians alike to salvage the principle of human freedom and accountability. When Souls had Wings underscores how durable (and controversial) this idea has been throughout the history of Western thought, the theological dangers it has represented, and how prominently it has featured in poetry, literature, and art.
