Avantgarde und Moderne haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu unterschiedlichen, aber mehrfach miteinander verzahnten Forschungsgebieten entwickelt. Innerhalb der franz sischen und deutschen akademischen Welt bleibt der Sammelbegriff "modernism" weniger gel ufig - "die (klassische) Moderne" und "modernit " fungieren hier als nahe liegende quivalente zu demjenigen, was im internationalen Kontext als eine zeitliche und r umliche Ko-Okkurenz k nstlerischer Ausdrucksformen und sthetischer Theorien namhaft gemacht werden kann, die ungef hr zwischen 1850 und 1950 angesiedelt werden kann. Auf hnliche Weise entfaltet die Bezeichnung "Avantgarde" eine Reihe h ufig widerspr chlicher Konnotationen. F r manche bedeutet die Avantgarde den radikalsten experimentellen Bruch der K nste und Literaturen mit den Darstellungs- und Erz hlkonventionen des 19. Jahrhundert: Im fr hen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert zeugen davon Avantgardebewegungen wie Futurismus, Expressionismus, Dada und Surrealismus, d.h. Str mungen, die als die "heroische" Phase der Avantgarde bezeichnet werden k nnen. F r andere geh rt die Avantgarde zu einer kulturellen und konzeptuellen Ordnung, die sich weitgehend von der 'modernistischen' unterscheidet oder sogar abhebt: Die avantgardistischen Experimente ab den f nfziger Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts kommen in dieser Hinsicht weitgehend ohne modernistische Begleiterscheinung aus.
Die Buchreihe Studien zur Europ ischen Avantgarde und Moderne m chte der Kompliziertheit der unterschiedlichen europ ischen Forschungstraditionen gerecht werden und strebt danach, die breite linguistische, terminologische und methodologische Vielfalt abzudecken. Anhand einer zweij hrlichen Sammlung von Beitr gen in englischer, franz sischer und deutscher Sprache m chte die Reihe nicht nur die franz sisch-, deutsch- und englischsprachigen, sondern auch die nord-, s d-, zentral- und osteurop ischen Ergebnisse der Avantgarde- und Moderne-Forschung einbeziehen. Die Reihe sammelt die neuesten und ertragreichsten Beitr ge zur Forschung und widmet sich der Erforschung der gesamten europ ischen Avantgarde und Moderne, ihrer Vorl ufer und ihrem Nachklang im Laufe des 19. und 20. The avant-garde and modernism take centre-stage within European academia today. The experimental literatures and arts in Europe between ca. 1850 and 1950, and their aftermath, figure prominently on curricula, while modernism and avant-garde studies have come to form distinct yet interlocking disciplines within the humanities in recent years. These disciplines take on various guises on the continent. Within French and German academia, "modernism" remains a term rather alien – "die Moderne" and "modernite" coming perhaps the closest to what is meant by "modernism" within the English context. Here, indeed, modernism has acquired a firm place in research, signaling above all a period in modern poetics and aesthetics, roughly between 1850 and 1950, during which a revolt against prevalent traditions in art, literature and culture took shape. Similarly, the term "avant-garde" comes with an array of often conflicting connotations. For some, the avant-garde marks the most radically experimental arts and literatures in modernism from the nineteenth century onward – the early twentieth-century vanguard movements of Futurism, Expressionism, Dada and Surrealism, among others, coinciding with the avant-garde's most "heroic" phase. For others, the avant-garde belongs to a cultural or conceptual order differing altogether from that of modernism – the vanguard exploits from the 1950s onward marking that avant-garde arts and literatures can also perfectly abide outside modernism.
European Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies
, far from aiming to reduce the complexity of various European research traditions, aspires to embrace the wide linguistic, terminological and methodological variety within both fields. Publishing an anthology of essays in English, French and German every two years, the series wishes to compare and relate French, German and British, but also Northern and Southern as well as Central and Eastern European findings in avant-garde and modernism studies. The series gathers the best and most thought-provoking recent research and devotes itself to the study of the European avant-garde and modernism throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. European Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies promotes interdisciplinary and intermedial research on experimental aesthetics and poetics, and aims to encourage an interest in the cultural dimensions and contexts of the avant-garde and modernism in Europe. Essays accepted by the editorial board are subjected to blind peer-review by international experts.

Описание: Spectacular Posthumanism examines the ways in which VFX imagery fantasizes about digital disembodiment while simultaneously reasserting the importance of the lived body. Analyzing a wide range of case studies—including the films of David Cronenberg and Stanley Kubrick, image technologies such as performance capture and crowd simulation, Game of Thrones , Terminator: Genisys , Planet Earth , and 300 —Ayers builds on Miriam Hansen’s concept of “vernacular modernism” to argue that the “vernacular posthumanism” of these media objects has a phenomenological impact on viewers. As classical Hollywood cinema initiated viewers into the experience of modernism, so too does the VFX image initiate viewers into digital, posthuman modes of thinking and being. Ayers’s innovative close-reading of popular, mass-market media objects reveals the complex ways that these popular media struggle to make sense of humanity’s place within the contemporary world. Spectacular Posthumanism argues that special and visual effects images produce a digital, posthuman vernacular, one which generates competing fantasies about the utopian and dystopian potential of a nonhuman future. As humanity grapples with such heady issues as catastrophic climate change, threats of anonymous cyber warfare, an increasing reliance on autonomous computing systems, genetic manipulation of both humans and nonhumans, and the promise of technologically enhanced bodies, the anxieties related to these issues register in popular culture. Through the process of compositing humans and nonhumans into a seemingly seamless whole, digital images visualize a utopian fantasy in which flesh and information might easily coexist and cohabitate with each other. These images, however, also exhibit the dystopic anxieties that develop around this fantasy. Relevant to our contemporary moment, Spectacular Posthumanism both diagnoses and offers a critique of this fantasy, arguing that this posthuman imagination overlooks the importance of embodiment and lived experience.
