Описание: This book sets out to examine the changing role of women in higher education with an emphasis on academic and leadership issues. The scope of the book is international, with a wide range of contributors, whose expertise spans sociology, social science, economics, politics, public policy and linguistic studies, all of whom have a major interest in global education. The volume examines the ways in which the leadership role and academic roles of women in higher education are changing in the twenty first century, offering an up-to-date policy discussion of this area. It is in some sense a sequel to the earlier volume by the same Editor, Women as Leaders and Managers in Higher Education, but with very different emphases. The pressures now are to respond to the demands of the technological age and to those of the global economy. Today there are more highly qualified and experienced female academics, and more expectation of their gaining the highest posts. Challenges still remain, particularly in terms of the top posts, and in equal pay. The discussion of global policy issues affecting the role of women in higher education is combined with country case studies, several of which are comparative. Together they examine and unpack the particular situations of women in a wide range of higher education systems, from Brazil to the US to Europe to Africa and the Far East, noting the shift towards more flexibility, more personal choice and a greater acceptance by society of their abilities. This volume is a useful and influential addition to published work in this area, and is aimed at the intelligent general reader as well as the scholar interested in this topic.

Описание:
Within the field of academic development, the last twenty years have seen a great expansion of published research into practice and the further development of theoretical approaches. This growth in the scholarship of academic development matches a growth in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Advancing Practice in Academic Development draws on these evolving scholarships to advance professional practice in academic development, addressing questions such as: .
How have global academic developers and their units developed and changed over recent decades?
How has the context in which academic development work is done altered?
What have academic developers and their professional associations learnt?
Case studies and examples are used throughout the text to illustrate development scenarios and methods. Academic development is considered as, among others, a critical, a scholarly, a principled, a pragmatic, a supporting and a leadership role. This book is ideal for use on academic development courses run by SEDA and other international organisations as well as by those who have responsibility for leading the improvement of educational practice. Written in a scholarly, accessible, stimulating and practical style, this book acknowledges difficulties and offers ways forward. As well as analysing problems, it offers solutions.

Описание: The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED)—an inter-institutional action project of the Carnegie Foundation—is a consortium of universities pursuing the goals of instituting a clear distinction between the professional doctorate in education and the research doctorate; and improving reliably and across contexts the efficacy of programs leading the professional doctorate in education. To this end, the aim is to advance the Education Doctorate (EdD) as the highest quality degree for the professional preparation of educational practitioners. With this book, the editors offer multiple perspectives of graduates from several CPED-influenced programmes and allow these graduates to describe how they have experienced innovative professional practice preparation.

The chapters in this book tell the reader a story of transformation providing several narratives that describe each graduate’s progression through their doctoral studies. Authors specifically chronicle how individual EdD programs prepared them to be scholarly practitioners, and how their doctoral studies changed who they have become as people and practitioners. The primary market for this project is scholars, professors, and students interested in higher education and doctoral education. In particular, those that are interested in understanding the purpose of the Education Doctorate (EdD) and its role in preparing Stewards of the Practice.

Through the artful science of portraiture, The Pedagogy of Teacher Activism presents the stories of four teacher activists—how they are and have become social change agents—to uncover important pedagogical underpinnings of teacher activism. Embedded in their stories are moments of political clarity and consciousness, giving rise to their purpose as teacher activists. The narratives illuminate how both inner passions and those stirred by caring relationships with others motivate their work, while the intentional ways in which they attempt to disrupt power relations give shape to their approaches to teacher activism. Knowing their work will never truly be done and that the road they travel is often difficult, the teacher activists considered here persist because of the hope and possibility that their work might change the world. Like many pre-service educators or undergraduates contemplating teaching as a vocation, these teacher activists were not born ready for the work that they do. Yet by mining their biographical histories and trajectories of political development, this book illuminates the pedagogy of teacher activism that guides their work.
This book offers the Teach Plus curriculum for amplifying teacher voice and creating more teacher leaders. It's a one-stop shop for educators who are interested in learning about the big picture in K12 education, and how they can affect it. It includes a clear view of Policy and Advocacy; a Teacher Leader How-To Guide; and stories from the trenches in getting teachers seats at decision-making tables across the nation. The book is structured with 10 chapters that correspond to the top ten things teachers need to know and be able to do to be effective change leaders. Each chapter is anchored with a story of effective teacher advocacy.
Teacher interest in taking greater leadership over the issues that affect American classrooms is at an all-time high. At the same time, teacher union strength and teacher morale have reached all-time lows. Teachers are seeking expanded influence and coming up short. Most teachers lack the knowledge and skills to be effective in advocating for their students' needs as well as their own. In some areas of education reform, teacher actions are increasing the odds that practitioners will be excluded from the decision-making table in the future. Teacher voice is essential to good education policy, yet teachers need new information to move from being perceived as the "party of no" to being recognized for their problem-solving ability.
Despite the obstacles, some teachers are having success advocating for important changes on behalf of their students and their profession. What makes these teachers different? They have learned the unwritten rules and tacit knowledge that governs decision-making in education. They have a playbook that gets them a seat at the decision-making table and results that benefit their students. Their experiences can point a way forward, and empower all teachers.
