Описание: This open access book is an original contribution to the knowledge on fishing and research associated with one of the most enigmatic fish of our seas: bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.). Based on available evidence, it reconstructs the possible methods used to catch large spawners in the Strait of Gibraltar thousands of years ago and describes the much more recent overfishing that led to a great reduction in the catches of the trap fishery on the area and the disappearance of the northern European fisheries. It is the first book to relate the overfishing of juvenile fishes in certain areas to the decline of large spawners in other very distant areas, revealing one of the main underlying causes of this decline, which has remained a mystery to the fishing sector and scientists alike for over 50 years. This finding should serve to prevent similar cases from arising in the future.
Описание: This atlas aims to present sound approaches to maturity sampling for a wide range of Mediterranean species – including bony fish, cartilaginous fish, both oviparous and viviparous, crustaceans and cephalopods – based on an accurate determination of the different maturity stages. It includes macroscopic photos of gonads belonging to the main species and, for some, a validation-based histological analysis.

Описание: Abstract: The Everglades is a unique wetland ecosystem. During this century, the ecosystem has been partitioned for disparate uses of human habitation, agriculture, water conservation and ecosystem conservation in a national park. The sustainability of Everglades National Park is dependent upon upstream water sources. Water management in the Everglades and water deliveries to the Park are linked to human perceptions of ecosystem dynamics. One line of inquiry used expansion of a state-of-the-art computer model to examine the upstream area that once contributed water to the Park. Linkages between vegetation and hydrology were added as vegetation mediation of evapotranspiration and flow and hydrologically induced vegetation changes, but neither addition appreciably improve understanding of hydrodynamics in the Everglades system at the scale of the model. Prior to management, the entire system, south of Lake Okeechobee, contributed flow to Everglades Park except during dry years. Since the onset of intensive water management, an equivalent area of only about one-third of the historic drainage basin has supplied water into the Park. But these conclusions are dependent upon the assumptions made to represent the system at a specific spatial-temporal scale in a model. At other scales the conclusions could well be different. That led to the second major topic of this thesis; that of cross-scale structure and dynamics. A cross-scale mode of inquiry suggests that ecosystems exhibit discontinuities in spatial structures and temporal patterns across time and space due to the interaction of key processes operating over different scale ranges. Spatial patterns in the topography, vegetation and fire data sets exhibited scale regions of self-similarity separated by distinct breaks. Temporal patterns of rainfall, stage, flow, evaporation and sea-level exhibited multiple cycles. These analyses support the theory that ecosystems are structured around a few keystone variables of mixed spatial and temporal dimensions. Dramatic discontinuities appear in patterns as a result of the interactions of processes operating at different space and time domains. This emerging viewpoint of ecosystem structure and dynamics will hopefully provide a basis for new understanding and hence improved management of this unique ecosystem. Описание:
An interdisciplinary study of the Kuroshio nutrient stream
The surface water of the Kuroshio, a western boundary current in the North Pacific Ocean, is nutrient-depleted and has relatively low primary productivity, yet abundant fish populations are supported in the region. This is called the "Kuroshio Paradox."
Kuroshio Current: Physical, Biogeochemical and Ecosystem Dynamics presents research from a multidisciplinary team that conducted observational and modeling studies to investigate this contradiction. This timely and important contribution to the ocean sciences literature provides a comprehensive analysis of the Kuroshio.
Volume highlights include:
New insights into the role of the Kuroshio as a nutrient stream
The first interdisciplinary examination of the Kuroshio Paradox
Reflections on the influence of the Kuroshio on Japanese culture
Research results on both the lower and higher trophic levels in the Kuroshio ecosystem
Comparisons of nutrient dynamics in the Kuroshio and Gulf Stream
Predictions of ecosystem responses to future climate variability
Описание: Ecosystems provide services that are crucial and beneficial to the human population. The management and conservation of these services can assure the wellbeing of the local population. Climate Change and Its Impact on Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity in Arid and Semi-Arid Zones is an essential reference source that studies the effects of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services in dry regions and examines various strategic local, national, and international policy developments to help overcome these impacts. Featuring research on topics such as poverty reduction, climate change, and adaption policies, this book is ideally designed for environmentalists, policymakers, government officials, academicians, researchers, and technology developers who want to improve their understanding of climate change impact, vulnerability, and sustainability, and the strategic role of adaptation and mitigation.
