The dominant economic discourse sees the humanities as “low-value,” an irritation at best. Lyotard helps us to think against this pervasive dismissal of creative activity, not by defending the honor of the humanities, but by inviting critical practices which aggravate this irritation. Critical practices trouble what counts as critique, embrace incertitude, and listen for silenced voices.
Twelve essays by artists and researchers take up Lyotard's invitation and begin to develop the idea of critical practice in the contemporary context. Three sections titled “What resists thinking;” “Long views and distances” and “Why art practice?” address contemporary concerns like affectivity, aesthetics, economic imperatives, militarism, pedagogy, posthumanism, and the closure of what in Lyotard's time was called "the West."
Four short pieces by Lyotard intervene in and buttress the discussion: “Apathy in Theory” and “Interview with Art Present,” here published in English for the first time, and “Affect-phrase” and “The Other’s Rights” republished here to highlight his prescient concern for that which cannot be articulated.

This is how her father described being jailed and extradited to an unknown destination. During World War II, German civilians living in Latin America were rounded up and imprisoned, taken to internment camps in the US, and later exchanged against American prisoners in Germany. They were innocent enemies, useful pawns.
About the Author
Margret S. de Oliveira Castro was born in Germany, went to school in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Canada, and has a Masters in Translation from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
She spent 20 years in Colombia, where she wrote La Lengua Ladina de Garcia M rquez, the first encyclopedic compilation of neologisms, localisms and unusual words that appear in the extensive work of the Colombian Nobel Laureate author. She later moved back to Geneva, where she dedicated herself to etymological research. She now resides in Miami, Florida, where she continues to write.

Icelandic Baroque seeks to approach the writings of Hallgrimur Petursson (1614-1674), Iceland's leading devotional poet, from a new direction. Hallgrimur is best known for his Passiusalmar, fifty hymns that contemplate the crucifixion and death of Christ, using a variety of meters and melodies; they have been sung in Iceland over Lent for many generations. This book offers a new evaluation of his poetry.
First, seventeenth-century Icelandic literature in general, and Hallgrimur's works in particular, are set in the wider context of contemporary European literature, particularly from Scandinavia and Germany. Second, the influence of the poet's social milieu, both domestic and overseas, is explored. Third, the author, Margret Eggertsdottir, explores whether and, if so, how aesthetic and literary theories of the baroque can enrich our understanding of seventeenth-century Icelandic literature. Her principal aim is to contribute to a reevaluation of Icelandic seventeenth-century literary history by applying new interpretative perspectives to works by leading poets of the period, most notably the iconic figure of Hallgrimur Petursson.
