Описание: Abstract:

The purpose of this research project was to evaluate techniques to improve the application of in situ penetration testing to Florida soils, with emphasis on the electronic cone penetrometer test (ECPT). Topics addressed included describing the spatial variability of soil properties, classifying Florida soils with the ECPT, and correlating the ECPT with the standard penetration test (SPT). A collateral purpose was to create an in situ test data base consisting of 97 ECPT soundings and 79 SPT tests. This data base was subsequently evaluated using statistical analysis.

The spatial variability study was carried out to evaluate methods of interpolation between test soundings. The techniques studied included three deterministic approaches (the mean, median, and a 10% trimmed average), three distance-weighting methods (two based on reciprocal distances, and linear interpolation), a random field model (a hybrid distance-weighting/regression model), and regression analysis.

While none of the approaches stood out as consistently superior predictors, the deterministic approaches were generally inferior to the other, more sophisticated methods. The distance-weighting methods and the random field model performed comparably, but were sensitive to individual test soundings. The regression models predicted slightly better on the average, and with more stability.

The ECPT classification study used parametric and nonparametric discriminant analysis of cone data on soils that had been identified from the SPT test. The ECPT was able to group soil accurately into one of seven categories (organics, clay, silt, clayey sand, silty sand, sand, weathered rock) approximately 40% of the time. This percentage increased to 70% when the three sand categories were combined, reflecting the SPT drillers' difficulties in discriminating silty soils.

In the SPT-ECPT correlation study, average q /N ratios for Florida soils were much higher than expected, possibly due to cementation or liquefaction. Regression analysis of the data suggested that the nature of the SPT-ECPT relationship is more a function of the magnitude of the tip resistance, and less of the actual soil type.

Описание: Many physical systems require the description of mechanical interaction across interfaces if they are to be successfully analyzed. Examples in the engineered world range from the design of prosthetics in biomedical engi- neering (e. g., hip replacements); to characterization of the response and durability of head/disk interfaces in computer magnetic storage devices; to development of pneumatic tires with better handling characteristics and increased longevity in automotive engineering; to description of the adhe- sion and/or relative slip between concrete and reinforcing steel in structural engineering. Such mechanical interactions, often called contact/impact in- teractions, usually necessitate at minimum the determination of areas over which compressive pressures must act to prevent interpenetration of the mechanical entities involved. Depending on the application, frictional be- havior, transient interaction of interfaces with their surroundings (e. g., in- termittent stick/slip), thermo-mechanical coupling, interaction with an in- tervening lubricant and/or fluid layer, and damage of the interface (i. e., wear) may also be featured. When taken together (or even separately ), these features have the effect of making the equations of mechanical evolu- tion not only highly nonlinear, but highly nonsmooth as well. While many modern engineering simulation packages possess impressive capabilities in the general area of nonlinear mechanics, it can be contended that methodologies typically utilized for contact interactions are relatively immature in comparison to other components of a nonlinear finite element package, such as large deformation kinematics, inelastic material modeling, nonlinear equation solving, or linear solver technology.

Описание: Robots That Talk and Listen provides a forward-looking examination of speech and language in robots from technical, functional, and social perspectives. Contributors address cultural foundations as well as the linguistic skills and technologies that robots need to function effectively in real-world settings. Among the most difficult and complex is the ability to understand and use language. Speech-enabled automata are already serving as interactive toys, teacher’s aides, and research assistants. These robots will soon be joined by personal companions, industrial co-workers, and military support automata. The social impact of these and other robots extends well beyond the specific tasks they perform. Contributors tackle the most knotty of those issues, notably acceptance of advanced, speech-enabled robots and developing ethical and moral controls for robots. Topics in this book include: •Language and Beyond: The True Meaning of “Speech Enabled” •Robots in Myth and Media •Enabling Robots to Converse •Language Learning by Automata •Handling Noisy Settings•Empirical Studies of Robots in Real-World Environments •Acceptance of Intelligent Robots•Managing Robots that Can Lie and Deceive•Envisioning a World Shared with Intelligent Robots
