Описание: Style and the Single Girl by Hope Howell Hodgkins reveals how four very different single-girl novelists employed modern modes to re-dress the traditional English marriage plot. In the first monograph to use fashion theory and history to trace the literary progress of British women in later modernity, Hodgkins argues that correspondences between a gendered sartorial style and a gendered literary style persisted throughout the modern era. She demonstrates how those correspondences did not fade but became fraught as women matured in the sharply gendered crucible of war.

Hodgkins delineates how in the 1920s and 1930s, popular novels by Dorothy Sayers and high-art fiction by Jean Rhys used dress to comment wittily and bitterly on gender relations. During World War II, changes in British Vogue and compromises made by the literary journal Horizon signaled the death of modernist styles, as Elizabeth Bowens gender-bent wartime stories show. Then demure and reserved postwar styles--Diors curvy New Look, the Movements understated literary irony--were intertwined in the fictions of Barbara Pym and Muriel Spark, who re-dressed the novel with a vengeance. Whether fashioning detective fiction, literary impressionism, or postwar comedy, these novelists used style in every sense to redefine that famous question, What do women want?

Описание: Looking for things to throw away to relieve the crowding, after pulling things aside and getting deeper into the dark, damp, cinder blocked room like an Egyptologist, I opened dusty, brown, cardboard boxes with faded writing from magic markers past; boxes unmoved and untouched for 39 years. I was stunned to find a treasure of letters and photographs; some over 100 years old. It was apparent that these boxes came with my grandmother on my mothers side (Matilda Loepp) from Sioux City, Iowa when she moved in with us in 1980; and they simply stayed there after she passed away in 1982, unchecked and forgotten. I realised that I was, at that moment, the only person who knew of the existence of these pictures; that my mother at 85 years of age and her sister at 88 years of age were the last two people who could solve the mystery of these photos, taken half a century to more than a century ago; I realized that Fate on behalf of the Loepps past, had bestowed on me the family duty of recovering these life stories and passing them on. our grandmother in Iowa, Mrs Loepp, had kept this simple Christmas card with her for the rest of her life from 1964 to 1982. As my parents house was her final residence, there were some boxes with her belongings stored in the basement. Only this year did I find this box and discover the things she saved and valued.

The Drift: Affect, Adaptation, and New Perspectives on Fidelity

Описание: The Drift: Affect, Adaptation, and New Perspectives on Fidelity offers a new perspective on the complex interrelations between literature and cinema. It does so by articulating an 'affective turn' for adaptation studies, a field whose traditional focus has been the critical castigation of film adaptations of canonical plays or novels. Drawing on theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, and Marco Abel, the author is able to re-conceive literary and cinematic works as textual engines generating and circulating affect, and the adaptive process as a drifting of those affective intensities from one medium to another.

By conceptualizing adaptation in this manner, the work steers clear of the chimerical notion of 'fidelity' (to character, to theme, to narrative) which has anchored so many analyses of adaptive texts over the years-and the reproving language that inevitably attends it-in favor of more productive avenues of investigation: What affective work are certain literary and filmic texts performing? What can this tell us, more broadly, about the underexplored affective dimensions of literature and cinema, and the dialogic interactions between them?

The Drift addresses such questions through close, careful readings which put a variety of realist, modernist, and postmodernist works into conversation with each other, among them the fiction of John Dos Passos, Don DeLillo, and Susanna Moore, the films of Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein, as well as recent cinematic adaptations by Jane Campion and Charles Burnett. This methodological approach, helps to elevate adaptation studies into a discourse that speaks more directly and pertinently to our fluid, hypertextual era
