Описание: In The Troubled Union: Expansionist Imperatives in Post-Reconstruction American Novels, John Mor n Gonz lez traces the imperialist imaginings behind literary efforts to reunite the United States after the trauma of the Civil War and Reconstruction. This innovative study explores how the U.S. historical romance attempted to rebuild a national identity by renovating Manifest Destiny for the twentieth-century imperialist future through courtship and marriage plots. Yet even as these literary romances promised expansive national futures, the racial and gender contradictions of U.S. democracy threatened to result in troubled unions at home and fractious ventures abroad. Canonical authors such as Henry James, popular authors such as Helen Hunt Jackson, and rediscovered authors such as Mar a Amparo Ruiz de Burton provide the dramatic narratives examined in this book. Employing theoretical perspectives drawn from American Studies and Latin American Studies, Gonz lez highlights the importance of the "domestic"-understood as both the domestic boundaries of the nation and of the home-as a key site within civil society that maintained and renewed imperialist national subjectivities. The Troubled Union combines the formal analysis of literary genre with interdisciplinary cultural studies to elucidate just how the imperial national allegory deeply structured the U.S. cultural imagination of the late nineteenth century.
Breaking Through Your Own Glass Ceiling offers simple, proven prosperity practices to address power dynamics faced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and other underrepresented communities. You can begin today to identify and uproot unhealthy patterns and replace them with consistent thoughts and behaviors to embrace a full-hearted life-even in environments that do not support your well-being. Many people attempt to navigate glass ceilings by reading self-help and motivational books that send the message that vision boards, meditation apps, and affirmations will compensate for exclusionary policies and laws. This book rejects the "one size fits all" approach to career development and self-care that leads people to internalize their own glass ceiling. If you are ready to have a full-hearted breakthrough, this book can be your daily guide and inspiration.
God Almighty A Sober-Minded View of Our Lot on Planet Earth
By: Jos R. Gonz lez
Have you ever wondered why there is life on Planet Earth but nowhere else in our solar system? Have you ever thought about human life, and how it came about on this planet? Are you bothered by the idea that life here is only transitory? One day our Earth will no longer exist; we are living here only temporarily. All the facts you have learned at home and in school only taught you about the here and now. But if you want to go beyond this, you need to think about the course of our solar system and the course of the universe. The universe is not a static entity; it is racing through space at incredible speed. We know how the universe as we know it came about, the result of the Big Bang. As human beings, we know much about what has happened since the Big Bang. But we are flummoxed if we try to find out what there was before the Big Bang. Neither scientists nor theologians know anything about the universe before the Big Bang. And the knowledge scientists depend on is only what they can observe of the universe, not from any divine source.

Описание: Do you want to try the Mediterranean diet and enjoy healthy and delicious food?
While there is a wide range of diets that are practiced in the Mediterranean, it is believed that the version of the diet that is studied in America comes from the way people ate in Italy and Greece.
The notion diet first came from a nutritionist that went by the name, Ancel Keys. He was credited for developing "K rations" for the American military. K-rations were individual daily combat food given to United States Army during World War Two. Originally, these were individually packaged rations used for short durations.
As time went on, Keys noted that the men who ate a traditional Cretan diet in the mountains of Crete had low rates of cancer, heart disease, and typically lived longer compared to other individuals.
With this in mind, he decided to institute a fifteen-year study over seven nations to see how regional diets affected mortality and disease rates. In this time, he looked at the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Finland, and Greece.
At the conclusion of this study, it was decided that the Mediterranean Diet had lower rates of death.
Interestingly enough, these regions did not have lower cholesterol levels compared to other countries. He attributed this to the fact that Mediterranean counties consumed lower levels of saturated fats and less dairy. On top of this, these regions also consumed higher rates of vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

Описание:
From award-winning novelist Argentine Betina Gonz lez comes a dizzying, luminous English-language debut about an American town overrun by a mysterious hallucinogen and the collision of three unexpected characters through the mayhem.
In a small Midwestern city, the deer population starts attacking people. So Beryl, a feisty senior and ex-hippie with a troubled past, decides to take matters into her own hands, training a squad of fellow retirees to hunt the animals down and to prove to society they're capable of more than playing bingo. At the same time, a group of protesters decides to abandon the "system" and live in the woods, leaving behind the demands of modern life--including their children. Nine-year-old Berenice never thought her mother would join the dropouts, but she's been gone for several days, leaving only a few clues about her past for Berenice to piece together. Vik, a taxidermist at the natural history museum and an immigrant from the Caribbean, is beginning to see the connections among the dropouts, the deer, and the discord. He's not normally the type to speak up, but when he finds a woman living in his closet, he's forced to get involved. Each of these engrossing characters holds a key to the city's unraveling--despite living on the margins of society--and just as their lives start to spin out of control, they rescue one another in surprising ways.
Описание: This is the true story of how, against all odds, a remote Mexican pueblo built its own autonomous cell phone network--without help from telecom companies or the government. Anthropologist Roberto J. Gonz lez paints a vivid and nuanced picture of life in a Oaxaca mountain village and the collective tribulation, triumph, and tragedy the community experienced in pursuit of getting connected. In doing so, this book captures the challenges and contradictions facing Mexico's indigenous peoples today, as they struggle to wire themselves into the 21st century using mobile technologies, ingenuity, and sheer determination. It also holds a broader lesson about the great paradox of the digital age, by exploring how constant connection through virtual worlds can hinder our ability to communicate with those around us.

Описание: While much historiography has assumed that the period from 1890 to 1930 was liberal in Argentina, Agustina González Nuñez forcefully argues in Catholicism and Nation in Argentina that the Society of Jesus – the Jesuit order of the Roman Catholic Church - proved a powerful force in shaping an alternate discourse of Argentinian nationhood. Advocating conservative thought, at the dawn of the twentieth century the Jesuits introduced such topics as “humanistic citizenship,” a “catholic society,” and “a new understanding of conservative thought.” The Jesuit mission was to produce national and international leaders, influence government policymaking, and promote the order within the national Catholic Church.
From 1911, the Jesuits supported the publication of a journal called Estudios (Studies) in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires. Its articles shaped conservative and Catholic thought. Estudios proposed an economic and political system compatible with Catholic values. The journal shaped a discourse tailored to humanism and a conservative Catholic society. This book analyzes Jesuit thought and its influence on the Argentinian ruling class and on the county’s formative concepts of “citizenship” and “nationhood.”
