The Vietnam War was the longest war in American history. The conflict began gradually after World War II. The Eisenhower administration supported southern Vietnam and increased American aid after the fall of a fortress at Dien Bien Phu to nationalist leader Ho Chi Minh in 1954. John F. Kennedy continued the commitment of American "advisors" through 1963. Lyndon B. Johnson chose to escalate the conflict dramatically after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964. American troop levels peaked in 1968 at over half a million soldiers. Also in 1968, the T t offensive demonstrated to the American public that their leaders' claims of progress were false and that the conflict was not worth the cost. Assassinations, riots, and the revelation of the My Lai massacre further added to public discontent, and with the election of 1969, Richard Nixon promised to end the war "with honor." Four long years later, American and Vietnamese leaders signed a peace treaty. The war cost over fifty thousand American lives, and many considered it a military defeat and moral failure. The conflict concluded with the 1975 reunification of Vietnam, but the war lingered in the minds of Americans. The Vietnam War remains a powerful memory in American culture because the conflict was a turning point in recent American history.
This book is a comprehensive study of the content, author demographics, publishing history, and media representation of the most prominent Vietnam veteran memoirs published between 1967 and 2005. These personal narratives are important because they have affected the collective memory of the Vietnam War for decades.

The judgments of historians regarding the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II can be grouped into two opposing camps: those who believe President Truman made the right choice and those who decry that decision, believing that other options were ignored and the motives presented for dropping the bomb were suspect. Many critics of the atomic bombing also argue that the decision failed to meet the "discrimination" and "proportionality" criteria outlined in Just War Theory (specifically, jus in Bello or conduct during the war) and, therefore, must be deemed an immoral act.
In examining whether the atomic bombing was a reasonable decision, this book analyzes the important variables and competing interests that President Truman considered and concludes that the atomic bombing was a sensible and rational choice and, therefore, reasonable. In determining whether the atomic bombing of Hiroshima was a just decision, this thesis examines that fateful decision through the prism of Just War Theory and the Natural Law traditions of the individual's Right to Life and the state's Right to Independence and concludes that it was a just decision.
The detailed review and analysis of the history behind the Hiroshima bombing reveal that President Truman was a prisoner of circumstances that existed in the summer of 1945. The options available to him were distressing and his decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, considering the dire situation, was well within reason and, admirably, proved prescient.
Grief is a natural response to loss. It might be the loss of a loved one, relationship, pregnancy, pet, job, or way of life. Other experiences of loss may be due to children leaving home, infertility, and separation from friends and family. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief is likely to be.
Grief is expressed in many ways and it can affect every part of your life; your emotions, thoughts and behavior, beliefs, physical health, your sense of self and identity, and your relationships with others. Grief can leave you feeling sad, angry, anxious, shocked, regretful, relieved, overwhelmed, isolated, irritable, or numb.
Grief has no set pattern. Everyone experiences grief differently. Some people may grieve for weeks and months, while others may describe their grief as lasting for years. Through the process of grief, however, you begin to create new experiences and habits that work around your loss.
Bereavement, even when expected, leaves indelible memories and defines some of the most important turning points in our lives. We absorb the impacts of loss within our unique life circumstances and as the individuals we are.
Each of us experiences the world in a way that is uniquely our own; within our worlds of experience we learn to feel, behave, think, expect, and hope as if those we care about will continue to live. When someone in our world dies, we remain postured in that world as we were before death, but we can no longer sustain that posture. We are challenged to learn new ways of feeling, behaving, thinking, expecting, and hoping in the aftermath of the loss. As we learn these things, we cope. Grieving, by definition, is just such coping with the challenges that bereavement presents. Grieving is what we do in response to what happens to us in bereavement.
A marriage usually deteriorates slowly, after months or years of simmering tension and poor communication.
Divorce and parental separation has been associated with a range of negative outcomes affecting all those involved in the process. But why is it particularly difficult for men, as multiple studies indicate it to be? How could men and women create a support system that will not only help the couple overcome challenges related to the split, but also help children cope with their parent's separation?
Marriage has been directly associated with men's health. 66% of men rely on their wives for their primary social support. Thus, divorce greatly increases a man's sense of isolation.
Divorce will mess you up in ways you never imagined and at times when you least expect it. You can have three or four days in a row where you're focused on other parts of your life like your career or your children and then...BOOM You wake up one morning and you're drowning in emotional quicksand.
This book explores what happens to some men when, despite the best of intentions and heroic efforts on all sides, a marriage ends in divorce.

Vikings are a part of everyday life. For a people who lived around a thousand years ago, their omnipresence is remarkable. They are a marketing device, a tourist attraction, and a subject on the national curriculum. They appear at museums, Viking festivals, and in comic strips, films, novels, and children's history books. They are a focus of academic controversy, with scholars waging an ongoing war over the proper interpretations of the Viking past, and they lend themselves readily to use in constructing various national and regional identities.
Vikings are a vibrant part of modern popular culture. Although the Viking Age ended nearly a millennium ago, today Viking images are everywhere, functioning as marketing devices, role models, and sources of regional/national pride and identity. This book examines the causes of the Vikings' adoption as icons of popular culture and looks at the various ways in which Vikings are used.
The book also turns to a chronological overview of political, literary, and archaeological developments that have influenced the evolution of Viking images.

Abraham Lincoln, a self-taught lawyer, legislator, and vocal opponent of slavery was elected 16th president of the United States in November 1860, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. Lincoln proved to be a shrewd military strategist and a savvy leader: His Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for slavery's abolition, while his Gettysburg Address stands as one of the most famous pieces of oratory in American history. In April 1865, with the Union on the brink of victory, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln's assassination made him a martyr to the cause of liberty, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in U.S. history.

Nearly fifty years after the assassination a majority of Americans continue to respond favorably towards President Kennedy's conduct in office despite revelations of his serial philandering and the cover-up of his serious health problems. This book examines the dominant images of the Kennedy presidency for some of the possible causes of the disparities between perception and reality.
Kennedy was the nation's first president to understand the power of imagery. He harnessed the power of media and television to cultivate favorable images and sustain popular appeal. Kennedy and others in the White House consciously worked to create positive images that portrayed the president's youthful appearance and his wholesome appeal as a faithful husband and loving father. Many people identified with idealized images of Kennedy who seemed like a picture of robust health and an ideal family man. Behind the scenes though, a different image has emerged overtime of an enigmatic, complex man-a human being who was capable of both selfless and selfish motives and actions. This book assesses both the positive and negative dimensions of the Kennedy legacy to provide a fresh perspective.
This book will survey John F. Kennedy's life and highlight some of the images associated with his rise to the presidency. It will summarize Kennedy's popular image to understand why some Americans embraced or rejected the President's image. The final chapter will discuss the impact of the assassination and emergence of the Camelot myth, and the legacy of the Kennedy presidency.
Based on an examination of historic, sociological, scholarly documents, and a lifelong interest in reading about the Kennedys, this thesis concludes that many Americans projected many positive values onto President Kennedy, but failed to account fully for the reality of his complexities and weaknesses.

Описание:
The years following the Texas Revolution held even more turbulent events as diverse droves of pioneers crossed the Sabine and Red Rivers to start new lives in Texas. Early Texas society contended with religious issues, family life in a rugged environment, and the Civil War. This cultural history was clearly reflected in the life of frontier preacher Henry C. Renfro.
Migrating to Texas in 1851, Renfro enrolled in the fledgling Baylor University and became a Baptist preacher. Eventually disillusioned with Baptist orthodoxy, Renfro was disenfranchised on charges of infidelity as he embraced the ideals of the Free Thought Movement, inspired by the writings of men such as Thomas Paine, Spinoza, and Robert Ingersoll.
Renfro's Civil War experience was no less unusual. Serving as both soldier and chaplain, Renfro left a valuable legacy of insight into the conflict, captured in a wealth of correspondence that is in itself significant.
Drawing on a vast body of letters, speeches, sermons, and oral histories that had never before been available, this chronological narrative of "The Parson's" life describes significant changes in Texas from 1850 to 1900, especially the volatile formation and growth of Baptist churches in North Central Texas. William Griggs' study yields numerous new details about the Free Thought Movement and depicts public reaction to sectarian leaders in nineteenth-century Texas.
The author also describes the developing Central Texas region known as the Cross Timbers, including the personal dynamics between a frontier family and its patriarch and encompassing such issues as property conflicts, divorce, and family reconciliation. This work unlocks an enlightening, engaging scene from Texas history.
