Описание: How activists in Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil provide inspiration and strategies for combating the gender violence epidemic in the United States How can the U.S. learn from the perspectives of anti-gender violence activists in South America and Africa as we seek to end intimate violence in this country? The U.S. has consistently positioned itself as a moral exemplar, seeking to export its philosophy and values to other societies. Yet in this book, Traci C. West argues that the U.S. has much to learn from other countries when it comes to addressing gender-based violence. West traveled to Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil to interview activists involved in the struggle against gender violence. In each of these places, as in the United States, Christianity and anti-black racism have been implicated in violence against women. In Ghana and Brazil, in particular, their Christian colonial and trans-Atlantic slave trade histories directly connect with the socioeconomic development of the Americas and historic incidents of rape of black slave women. With a transnational focus on religion and racism, West brings a new perspective to efforts to systemically combat gender violence. Calling attention to forms of violence in the U.S. and international settings, such as marital rape, sex trafficking of women and girls, domestic violence, and the targeting of lesbians, the book offers an expansive and nuanced view of how to form activist solidarity in tackling this violence. It features bold and inspiring approaches by black women leaders working in each setting to uproot the myriad forms of violence against women and girls. Ultimately, West calls for us to learn from the lessons of Africana activists, drawing on a defiant Africana spirituality as an invaluable resource in the quest to combat the seemingly chronic problem of gender-based violence.

Описание:
The Routledge Handbook of Africana Criminologies plugs a gaping hole in criminological literature, which remains dominated by work on Europe and settler-colonial locations at the expense of neo-colonial locations and at a huge cost to the discipline that remains relatively underdeveloped.
It is well known that criminology is thriving in Europe and settler-colonial locations while people of African descent remain marginalized in the discipline. This Handbook therefore defines and explores this field within criminology, moving away from the colonialist approach of offering administrative criminology about policing, courts and prisons, and making a case for decolonizing the wider discipline. Arranged in five parts, it outlines Africana Criminologies, maps its emergence and addresses key themes such as slavery, colonialism and apartheid as crimes against humanity; critiques of imperialist reason; Africana cultural criminology; and theories of law enforcement and Africana people. Coalescing a diverse range of voices from Africa and the diaspora, the handbook explores outside Eurocentric canons in order to learn from the experiences, struggles and contributions of people of African descent.
Offering innovative ways of theorizing and explaining the criminological crises that face Africa and the entire world with the view of contributing to a more humane world, this ground-breaking handbook is essential reading for criminologists and sociologists world-wide, as well as scholars of Africana studies and African studies.

Описание: African Americans in Higher Education critically examines African Americans in higher education with an emphasis on social and philosophical foundations of Africana culture. The organizational structure of the volume is a critical interdisciplinary study, which examines the collection, interpretation, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in the field of higher education. Moreover, the intellectual history of Black education as an interdisciplinary body of knowledge postures unconventional methods of examining Africana phenomena. To date, there are not any single-authored or edited volumes of essays that attempt to examine the logical and conceptual ideas of the disciplinary matrix of Africana social and philosophical foundations of African Americans in higher education. This project offers an interdisciplinary lens within the matrix of Africana Studies to locate race and communication in place, space, and time. Therefore, the publication of an edited work of this nature affords readers a compilation of literary, historical, philosophical, and communicative essays that attempt to describe and evaluate the Black experience from an Afrocentric perspective.
