Описание: Halifax's Poet Laureate Afua Cooper and photographer Wilfried Raussert collaborate in this book of poems and photographs focused on everyday Black experiences. The result is a jambalaya -- a dialogue between image and text. Cooper translates Raussert's photos into poetry, painting a profound image of what disembodied historical facts might look like when they are embodied in contemporary characters. This visual and textual conversation honours the multiple layers of Blackness in the African diaspora around North America and Europe. The result is a work that amplifies black beauty and offers audible resistance.

Описание: Black Matters, Volume II, "Plagues of Dysfunction" is ZaZa Ali's second installment of her trilogy "Black Matters". In this work, ZaZa attempts to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing Black America, from a perspective that emphasizes Self-Accountability and taking responsibility for the condition we find ourselves in. Topics discussed in this work include, but are not limited to; Black feminism, materialism, Black male / female relationships, the mishandling of children, sexual perversion, matriarchy vs patriarchy, self-destruction and much more. The goal of this project is to shine a light on topics rarely discussed, with the hopes of going to the root of dysfunctional behaviors plaguing our communities. Blacks in America, descendants of the African diaspora, have spearheaded a movement in trendsetting on a global scale for most of modern history. While our impact has not always been positive, it has most certainly been effective. It is our hope that with a spotlight placed on certain behaviors, we will begin to see the power in our persuasion as a people, and embrace our rolls as cultural leaders and global citizens. This book, "Plagues of Dysfunction" is an offering to aid us in that direction.

Описание: An in-depth look at Black food and the challenges it faces today For Black Americans, the food system is broken. When it comes to nutrition, Black consumers experience an unjust and inequitable distribution of resources. Black Food Matters examines these issues through in-depth essays that analyze how Blackness is contested through food, differing ideas of what makes our sustenance “healthy,” and Black individuals’ own beliefs about what their cuisine should be. Primarily written by nonwhite scholars, and framed through a focus on Black agency instead of deprivation, the essays here showcase Black communities fighting for the survival of their food culture. The book takes readers into the real world of Black sustenance, examining animal husbandry practices in South Carolina, the work done by the Black Panthers to ensure food equality, and Black women who are pioneering urban agriculture. These essays also explore individual and community values, the influence of history, and the ongoing struggle to meet needs and affirm Black life. A comprehensive look at Black food culture and the various forms of violence that threaten the future of this cuisine, Black Food Matters centers Blackness in a field that has too often framed Black issues through a white-centric lens, offering new ways to think about access, privilege, equity, and justice. Описание: An award-winning overview of black history, now updated for the paperback edition.
Pro Football Black Quarterbacks and the N-Word Matter highlights a select group of Black quarterbacks and the psychological and sociological sacrifices they made in order to play the sport--a 101 course on the Black male's struggle to succeed in life and sports. It also discusses Black athletes who wanted to become leaders on the football field but were denied the opportunity to show their skills by racist notions still prevalent in our society. The book explores the relationship between the Black quarterbacks in the NFL and the Black male in society, and exposes the flawed thinking and stereotypes that often hold Blacks back--whether in the military, on the football field, or in the political arena. And finally, it focuses on the psychological cost of achieving success at a position historically considered "Whites Only," like the restrooms and water fountains of the Jim Crow era. If you want psychological and sociological insights into the saga of professional football--and the N-word--this is your crib sheet
It's no secret that the Black community tops the list of groups afflicted by hypertension, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, and cancer. What the statistics do not show is the pain, misery, and despair that these conditions create--not only for the individual, but also for family and friends. As an African-American doctor, Dr. Richard Walker has studied these conditions among his patients for many years. Now, in Black Health Matters, Dr. Walker offers a number of commonsense ways to prevent, manage, and possibly eliminate these killers, turning the tide of African-American health.
In this unique book, Dr. Walker looks at the Black community's lifestyle, which has radically changed over the centuries. He follows the health and healthcare journey of the African captives into slavery and describes what they had to do to survive nutritionally, psychologically, and culturally, ultimately resulting in the chronic ill health and early death now pervasive in Black communities. Most important, Dr. Walker explains how African Americans can turn their health around by understanding and incorporating better nutrition, nutritional supplements, regular healthcare checkups, and exercise into their lives. Each chapter explains a different health problem common to the Black community--including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, sickle cell anemia, and more--and offers concrete ways in which that condition can be avoided or better managed, often through simple changes that can be easily made by the individual. Special chapters explore nutrition, healthcare and racism, and other important topics, and tips are included for locating and communicating with affordable healthcare professionals.
A concise yet critical guide, Black Health Matters offers an important first step towards achieving a healthier, longer life for millions of people.
