Описание:

A stirring account of the experiences of migrant domestic workers, and what freedom, abuse, and power mean within a vast contract labor system.

In the United Arab Emirates, there is an employment sponsorship system known as the kafala. Migrant domestic workers within it must solely work for their employer, secure their approval to leave the country, and obtain their consent to terminate a job. In Unfree, Rhacel Salazar Parrenas examines the labor of women from the Philippines, who represent the largest domestic workforce in the country. She challenges presiding ideas about the kafala, arguing that its reduction to human trafficking is, at best, unproductive, and at worst damaging to genuine efforts to regulate this system that impacts tens of millions of domestic workers across the globe.

The kafala system technically renders migrant workers unfree as they are made subject to the arbitrary authority of their employer. Not surprisingly, it has been the focus of intense scrutiny and criticism from human rights advocates and scholars. Yet, contrary to their claims, Parrenas argues that most employers do not abuse domestic workers or maximize the extraction of their labor. Still, the outrage elicited by this possibility dominates much of public discourse and overshadows the more mundane reality of domestic work in the region. Drawing on unparalleled data collected over 4 years, this book diverges from previous studies as it establishes that the kafala system does not necessarily result in abuse, but instead leads to the absence of labor standards. This absence is reflected in the diversity of work conditions across households, ranging from dehumanizing treatment, infantilization, to respect and recognition of domestic workers.

Unfree shows how various stakeholders, including sending and receiving states, NGOs, inter-governmental organizations, employers and domestic workers, project moral standards to guide the unregulated labor of domestic work. They can mitigate or aggravate the arbitrary authority of employers. Parrenas offers a deft and rich portrait of how morals mediate work on the ground, warning against the dangers of reducing unfreedom to structural violence.

Описание:

Every minute 24 people are forced to leave their homes and over 65 million are currently displaced world-wide. Small wonder that tackling the refugee and migration crisis has become a global political priority.

But can this crisis be resolved and if so, how? In this compelling essay, renowned human rights lawyer and scholar Jacqueline Bhabha explains why forced migration demands compassion, generosity and a more vigorous acknowledgement of our shared dependence on human mobility as a key element of global collaboration. Unless we develop humane 'win-win' strategies for tackling the inequalities and conflicts driving migration and for addressing the fears fuelling xenophobia, she argues, both innocent lives and cardinal human rights principles will be squandered in the service of futile nationalism and oppressive border control.

The Figure of the Migrant in Contemporary European Cinema

Описание: The Figure of the Migrant in Contemporary European Cinema explores contemporary debates around the concepts of ‘Europe’ and ‘European identity’ through an examination of recent European films dealing with various aspects of globalization (the refugee crisis, labour migration, the resurgence of nationalism and ethnic violence, neoliberalism, post-colonialism) with a particular attention to the figure of the migrant and the ways in which this figure challenges us to rethink Europe and its core Enlightenment values (citizenship, justice, ethics, liberty, tolerance, and hospitality) in a post-national context of ephemerality, volatility, and contingency that finds people desperately looking for firmer markers of identity. The book argues that a compelling case can be made for re-orienting the study of contemporary European cinema around the figure of the migrant viewed both as a symbolic figure (representing post-national citizenship, urbanization, the ‘gap’ between ethics and justice) and as a figure occupying an increasingly central place in European cinema in general rather than only in what is usually called ‘migrant and diasporic cinema’. By drawing attention to the structural and affective affinities between the experience of migrants and non-migrants, Europeans and non-Europeans, Trifonova shows that it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate stories about migration from stories about life under neoliberalism in general

Описание: This compilation opens with a study that seeks to understand the ways in which various parent involvement behaviors impact Hmong elementary students academic abilities in reading and math, also investigating whether or not Hmong students English proficiency moderates these relationships. The subsequent study focuses on the interrelation between family factors, child-rearing conditions, parents mindset and formation of civic and ethnic identity of teenagers in mono-ethnic and interethnic families of migrants. The authors go on to present the systemic and cultural stressors voiced specifically by Mexican-American youth, providing implications for community-based participatory research, intervention work, and advocacy. Following this, they assess the outcomes of a school intervention program aimed at improving interethnic relations among primary school children in Italy through foreign language learning activities. The academic achievements and educational trajectories of the children of immigrants in Austria are examined. In particular, the experiences of second- and third-generation pupils may provide a clearer indication of the long-term prospects for integration than those of first-generation immigrants. In closing, Immigrant and Migrant Children: Current Issues and Challenges reviews the current literature about the harmful implications of arrest, detention, and deportation on undocumented childrens mental health, discussing the underlying factors of the harmful consequences.
