Studies in Early Modern and Contemporary European History is published under the auspices of the Italian-German Historical Institute of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento. On the one hand, it consists of the institute’s conference proceedings. On the other hand, the series includes collections of essays and monographs from external authors working in those fields of historical research which are central to the institute. The primary focus is on European history with a special accent on the history of German-Italian relations. One of the series’ virtues is the cross-epochal perspective of many of its publications, which has become one of the trademarks of the institute in Trento.

It was far from inevitable that Rome would emerge as the spiritual center of Western Christianity in the early Middle Ages. After the move of the Empire's capital to Constantinople in the fourth century and the Gothic Wars in the sixth century, Rome was gradually depleted physically, economically, and politically. How then, asks Maya Maskarinec, did this exhausted city, with limited Christian presence, transform over the course of the sixth through ninth centuries into a seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of sanctity? Conventional narratives explain the rise of Christian Rome as resulting from an increasingly powerful papacy. In City of Saints, Maskarinec looks outward, to examine how Rome interacted with the wider Mediterranean world in the Byzantine period. During the early Middle Ages, the city imported dozens of saints and their legends, naturalized them, and physically layered their cults onto the city's imperial and sacred topography. Maskarinec documents Rome's spectacular physical transformation, drawing on church architecture, frescoes, mosaics, inscriptions, Greek and Latin hagiographical texts, and less-studied documents that attest to the commemoration of these foreign saints. These sources reveal a vibrant plurality of voices—Byzantine administrators, refugees, aristocrats, monks, pilgrims, and others—who shaped a distinctly Roman version of Christianity. City of Saints extends its analysis to the end of the ninth century, when the city's ties to the Byzantine world weakened. Rome's political and economic orbits moved toward the Carolingian world, where the saints' cults circulated, valorizing Rome's burgeoning claims as a microcosm of the "universal" Christian church.

It argues that most past and present conflicts, even if the discourses about them are conducted in religious terms, have origins other than religion and/or blend religion with other causes, namely socio-economic and political injustice and inequality. Understanding the use and abuse of religion to justify violence is a prerequisite to discerning the nature of a conflict and might thus contribute to conflict resolution.

As clerics living among the laity, priests played a double role within their communities: that of local representatives of the Church and religious experts, and that of owners of land and other goods. By virtue of their membership of both the ecclesiastical and the secular world, they can be considered as ‘men in the middle’: people who brought politico-religious ideas and ideals to secular communities, and who linked the local to the supra-local via networks of landownerhsip. This book addresses both roles that local priests played by approaching them via their manuscripts, and via the charters that record transactions in which they were involved. Manuscripts once owned by local priests bear witness to their education and expertise, but also indicate how, for instance, ideals of the Carolingian reforms reached the lowest levels of early medieval society. The case-studies of collections of charters, on the other hand, show priests as active members of networks of the locally powerful in a variety of European regions. Notwithstanding many local variations, the contributions to this volume show that local priests as ‘men in the middle’ are a phenomenon shared by the early medieval world as a whole.

Описание: This volume brings together a set of articles by Professor Anton Scharer dealing with the themes of conversion, court culture and royal representation in Anglo-Saxon England and Carolingian Europe. It includes two previously unpublished papers, and another four specially translated into English for this publication. Three papers focus on different aspects of conversion: the spread of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England by means of social relations, the role of language in this process and the monastic and social background of the insular mission to the Continent. With conversion came the import of Latin written culture, including charters, and one study focuses on royal styles in Anglo-Saxon charters. A second paper on early mediaeval royal diplomas, and what they at times reveal about very personal reactions and sentiments, leads to the theme of court culture. This is further explored in a batch of papers centred on Alfred the Great and covering the subjects of historiography, of inauguration rites or ordines, and of hitherto neglected personal contacts, as a clue to the transmission of experiences, ideas and texts.
