Описание: Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics is part of the Catalyzing Change Series, a collection of three books intended to initiate the critical conversations on policies, practices, and issues that impact mathematics education. In 2018, the first book in the series, Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations, was published. The work initiated by that book suggested a need to broaden the critical conversations to include early childhood, elementary, and middle school mathematics. For example, the recommendation for a common shared pathway in high school mathematics must take into consideration what must happen in early childhood and elementary mathematics for a common shared pathway to become a reality in middle and high school mathematics.Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations recognizes that the strengths and needs of young children must be considered when addressing the continuity and alignment of mathematics education for this student group. It also identifies and addresses the critical conversations necessary to meet the following critical challenges:
  • Broadening the purpose of school mathematics to prioritize development of deep conceptual understanding so that children experience joy and confidence in themselves as emerging mathematicians
  • Dismantling structural obstacles that stand in the way of mathematics working for each and every student
  • Implementing equitable instructional practices to cultivate students’ positive mathematical identities and a strong sense of agency
  • Organizing mathematics along a common shared pathway grounded in the use of mathematical practices and processes to coherently develop a strong foundation of deep mathematical understanding for each and every child

    • Read Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics and find out why the status quo is unacceptable, what actions you can take to change it, and how to make a difference! Be a part of the bright future of mathematics teaching and learning.

Описание:

Taking a broad approach, Beyond Quality in Early Childhood Education and Care relates issues of early childhood to the sociology of childhood, philosophy, ethics, political science and other fields and to an analysis of the world we live in today. It places these issues in a global context and draws on work from Canada, Sweden and Italy, including the world famous nurseries in Reggio Emilia.
Working with postmodern ideas, this book questions the search to define and measure quality in the early childhood field and its tendency to reduce philosophical issues of value to purely technical and managerial issues of expert knowledge and measurement.
With a brand new Preface to this classic text, the authors argue that there are other ways than the 'discourse of quality' for understanding and evaluating early childhood pedagogical work and relate these to alternative ways of understanding early childhood itself and the purposes of early childhood institutions.

Students undergo significant developmental changes from elementary school to middle school. These changes contribute to how they see and understand the world as well as how they see and understand their place in the world. Critical conversations that middle school teachers need to initiate should center on the following serious challenges:Broadening the purpose of school mathematics’ focus to include the development of positive mathematical identities so that students can make purposeful decisions about their future endeavorsDismantling structural obstacles that stand in the way of mathematics working for each and every studentImplementing equitable instructional practices to cultivate students’ positive mathematical identities and strong sense of agencyOrganizing middle school mathematics along a common shared pathway grounded in the use of mathematical practices and processes to coherently develop deep mathematical understandingRead Catalyzing Change in Middle School Mathematics and find out why the status quo is unacceptable, what actions you can take to change it, and how to make a difference! Описание: Elementary mathematics specialists are teacher leaders who are responsible for supporting effective PK–6 mathematics instruction and student learning. The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in a 2010 joint position paper on Elementary Mathematics Specialists (EMSs), all advocate for the use of EMSs to support the teaching and learning of mathematics. The specific roles and expectations of EMSs will vary according to the needs of each setting, “but their expertise and successful experience at the elementary level is critical” (p 1).Elementary Mathematics Specialists: Developing, Refining, and Examining Programs that Support Mathematics Teaching and Learning is AMTE’s latest resource supporting the important work of EMSs. It has five sections related to the preparation and professional development of EMSs: (a) Overview and Current State of Affairs; (b) Models of EMS Program Development & Delivery; (c) Supporting EMSs in the Field; (d) The Mathematics Specialist Research; and (e) Future Directions. The book provides support to EMS practitioners, program providers/developers, and researchers seeking to answer important questions about how to prepare Mathematics Specialists, support them in the field, and research their effectiveness.

Описание:

Young children need to develop and understand the core basic concepts in mathematics before they can move forward in their mathematical learning. Without these solid foundations, they are more likely to have gaps in their knowledge and require intervention in their primary years. This new book provides guidance and resources to help you develop children's key skills and understanding in mathematics.

Written by experienced teachers, the book outlines key mathematical concepts and provides a wide range of exciting, mathematically rich activities that support the development of these concepts. It exposes some of the common misconceptions and errors that practitioners may observe children showing in their settings and offers simple practical strategies to help move children forward in their thinking and understanding.

Covering all areas of mathematics learning - counting and number, calculation, shape and space, pattern, measuring and handling data - the book features:

    • practical ideas for supporting assessment, observation, mathematical vocabulary and building links with home
    • activities that promote a child-led approach, linked to children's everyday lives and experiences
    • guidance on how to extend and challenge children's learning through adult-led, quality teaching and effective practice
    • a clear sense of progression based on children's understanding rather than age.

Written by experienced practitioners, The Building Blocks of Early Maths will help you to ensure that the children in your care have the strong foundations they need to become confident successful mathematician in the future.

This volume presents current research on the connections between the home and family environment on children’s mathematics development. Focusing on infancy through first grade, it details the role of parents and other caregivers in promoting numeracy and the ways their active participation can prepare young children for learning about formal mathematics. Research data answer key questions regarding the development of numeracy alongside cognitive and linguistic skills, early acquisition of specific math skills, and numeracy of children with atypical language skills. The book also provides practical recommendations for parents and other caregivers as well as implications for future research studies and curriculum design.
Included in the coverage:
Ways to optimize home numeracy environments.Individual differences in numerical abilities.Cross-cultural comparisons and ways to scaffold young children's mathematical skills.Mathematics and language in the home environment.Center-based and family-based child care.Games and home numeracy practice.
Early Childhood Mathematics Skill Development in the Home Environment is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students, and professionals in infancy and early childhood development, child and school psychology, early childhood education, social work, mathematics education, and educational psychology.
