This book employs actor-network theory in order to examine how representations of crime are produced for contemporary prime-time television dramas. As a unique examination of the production of contemporary crime television dramas, particularly their writing process, Making Crime Television: Producing Entertaining Representations of Crime for Television Broadcast examines not only the semiotic relations between ideas about crime, but the material conditions under which those meanings are formulated.
Using ethnographic and interview data, Anita Lam considers how textual representations of crime are assembled by various people (including writers, directors, technical consultants, and network executives), technologies (screenwriting software and whiteboards), and texts (newspaper articles and rival crime dramas). The emerging analysis does not project but instead concretely examines what and how television writers and producers know about crime, law and policing. An adequate understanding of the representation of crime, it is maintained, cannot be limited to a content analysis that treats the representation as a final product. Rather, a television representation of crime must be seen as the result of a particular assemblage of logics, people, creative ideas, commercial interests, legal requirements, and broadcasting networks. A fascinating investigation into the relationship between television production, crime, and the law, this book is an accessible and well-researched resource for students and scholars of Law, Media, and Criminology.
Описание: What you need to know to survive, long term.Interests between broadcasters and telecom people are blurring. Technical operations and design engineers in one field are increasingly required to deal with practices and techniques in the other. The problem is expectations and terminology differences aren't recognized until it's too late.Take "Quality of Service." The telecom people specify a percentage of the time that the service is guaranteed to be available. The down time may be very, very small. But, if it occurs during a high-priced commercial in the Super Bowl, it is very, very serious for the broadcaster. Practical IP and Telecom for Broadcast Engineering and Operations teaches the technology and how to structure it and make sure the finances work in your favor.Learn how to: * Define communications circuit, equipment, facilities and services used in broadcast engineering and operations.* Evaluate suppliers as well as their products and services.* Prepare technical specifications and requests for bids, proposals required in competitive procurement actions.* Conduct communications operational effectiveness and cost audits.* Prepare communications cost management strategies and plans.* Plan and execute capital projects.* Survive Long-TermCritical for engineers, technicians, and managers engaged in designing, installing, testing, and maintaining equipment and network services for program content, training material, or audio/video conferencing. Valuable knowledge for planning, design, integration and operation of communications equipment, facilities and services used in broadcast operations, training and conferencing applications.Fred Huffman is a systems engineer with Athens Olympic Broadcasting, the Host Broadcaster for the 2004 Games. He has more than 35 years experience in technical and management roles in broadcasting and telecommunications fields. This work is largely a reflection of that experience, captured in a way that introduces the reader to technical aspects of IP, ATM and classical telecom, along with business essentials such as contracts, tariffs, project planning, budgeting and long range planning.
Описание: The 20th century was a time of rapid expansion in media industries, as well as of accelerating demands for equality and recognition for women. While women’s agency has typically been defined through the domestic sphere, the introduction of media into the home destabilised firm boundaries between public and private spheres. Gender and Media in the Broadcast Age demonstrates how women as media producers and audiences in three countries with public service broadcasters (UK, Canada and Australia) have contributed to changes in our understandings of public and private. Justine Lloyd offers a new way of understanding how tremendous changes in social definitions of gender roles played out in media forms worldwide during this period through the notion of ‘intimate geographies’. Women’s participation in media continues to be a key challenge to notions of the public sphere and the book concludes that profound changes initiated in the broadcast era are unfinished in the age of digital media. Lloyd therefore provides rich and valuable evidence of the dynamic relationship between media texts, producers and audiences that is relevant to contemporary debates about a growing gender ‘apartheid’ in a mediated culture.

Описание:
This ground breaking collection of essays is the first to examine the phenomenon of how, in the twenty-first century, Shakespeare has been experienced as a 'live' or 'as-live' theatre broadcast by audiences around the world. Shakespeare and the 'Live' Theatre Broadcast Experience explores the precursors of this phenomenon and its role in Shakespeare's continuing globalization. It considers some of the most important companies that have produced such broadcasts since 2009, including NT Live, Globe on Screen, RSC Live from Stratford-upon-Avon, Stratford Festival HD, Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live, and Cheek by Jowl, and examines the impact these broadcasts have had on branding, ideology, style and access to Shakespeare for international audiences. Contributors from around the world reflect on how broadcasts impact on actors' performances, changing viewing practices, local and international Shakespearean fan cultures and the use of social media by audience members for whom "liveness" is increasingly tied up in the experience economy.
The book tackles vexing questions regarding the 'presentness' and 'liveness' of performance in the 21st century, the reception of Shakespeare in a globally-connected environment, the challenges of sustaining an audience for stage Shakespeare, and the ideological implications of consuming theatre on screen. It will be crucial reading for scholars of the 'live' theatre broadcast, and enormously helpful for scholars of Shakespeare on screen and in performance more broadly.

Описание: This volume of essays contributes to current debates about Shakespeare in new media. It importantly develops the field by providing a comparativist approach to Shakespeare’s dynamic media history. Contributors to Broadcast Your Shakespeare address the variety of ways Shakespeare texts have been expressed through different media and continue to be. Writing at the intersection of Shakespeare studies and media studies, these international contributors also consider the role of a particular media in producing Shakespeare’s effect on us - as readers, viewers and users. The volume suggests how current analyses of new media Shakespeare have much to learn from older media, and that an awareness both of media specificity and also continuity can enhance Shakespeare pedagogy and research.
